Ryan says he's done contract work for the U.S. Army and he brags on his blog that he leads "a team called Black Cell, a team of the most-highly trained and capable physical, threat and cyber security professionals in the world."

He looks like a fat piece of sh*t. Couldn't make $$$ in the real IT world, so he got a govt. gig. Hello, asshole.

Yeah, you're super-elite.

if this guy actually admitted to hacking into the OWS listserv and told this to the FBI...then he just admitted to breaking several computer crime/anti-hacking laws. I wonder how our law and order/strict authoritarian types around here will react to this fact?

The word 'immunity' most likely dominated the discussions with the FBI.

I'd still like to know more details of just what this security expert did to gain access to that listserv. if he broke the law, then he should be held accountable.

I should have said organizers such as the ones mentioned, but not named, in TFA.

Anonymous bringing on the DDoS wrath to target a Wikileaks-like exposure they're on the wrong side of would be a rich irony.

So private citizens breaking laws to protest corporate overreach = good
Private citizens taking it upon themselves to break laws to sabotage the first = bad?

Laws are broken on both sides of this issue every day Weaver, why restrict your ire to one or the other?

At least he has the correct method down. This group would require no violence to disperse if you kill their communications. Without their fix every 15 minutes on twitter and facebook, they will clear out in a hurry. A little creativity and you could shut these folks down with minimal fuss and no real damage to property.

who says I do?

personally I think computer crime laws are a joke. corporations get caught breaking them all the time and nothing ever happens to them. the only people who go to jail for hacking are the little guys.

Cold day in hell before I vote, or encourage anyone to vote republican. Find another label, since you seem to have this overwhelming desire to apply them.

Um no, its not. Spurious creation of hotspots (3k or so seems to be the magic number) will take care of the laptops using 801.X connections. There is software that does this off the shelf and it is very very effective at killing those connections.
A $3 bag of parts to build yourself a sweep generator takes care of the 3g 4g and wireless xmit frequencies.

Put the software on a single board, and running off a flash card and you can hide it anywhere, same for the sweep generator.

Cheap enough that you could build enough to literally throw them away all around the area.

Impossible? Hardly.

Fix'd Shrugging and ignoring them is how you get rid of them, unless they're truly committed, and the core 5% that will protest no matter what can be marginalized. Cutting commo shows you're desperate. It redoubles their efforts. Once you've visibly wronged them, they'll have a rallying point to cling to. That vague sense of getting dicked in the ass by the megacorps is a match in a hurricane next to the firestorm of using draconian measures to suppress dissent. Everyone and their sister will pick this up, their numbers will swell, and you'll create sympathy amongst the common man. Instead of killing the movement, you just gave it a shot of steroids and a beating stick.

IOW, you've gone full retard.

No, it isn't. It would just be incredibly crazy to try to do something on that scale, with its huge consequences. But not technically impossible.

It's not hard, but if you've ever been on a mailing list with any volume you will find out that it's exceedingly hard for some people to sign off. Very few things make me want to murder people more than people who follow up to mailing lists saying "take me off" when there are instructions for doing so at the bottom of each message.
