I was going to mention "Dress Rehearsal Rag" but you beat me to it.

I always considered Leonard Cohen as a softer Bob Dylan.

Both were excellent songwriters, but unfortunately were not gifted with the correct voice to transmit said songwriting.

Bob Dylan used Jimi Hendrix and Guns n' Roses to his advantage.
Leonard Cohen used Jeff Buckley and John Cale and Jennifer Warnes to his.

I don't think you were gifted with the proper auditory/cognitive equipment to appreciate said songwriting. ;)

As a side note, I saw Cohen on the concluding night of his worldwide tour last December in Vegas. The man's a treasure.

Can't forget Jennifer Warnes. She covered a bunch of LC songs, even made a tribute album to him "Famous Blue Raincoat" in the late 80's.

I really wish I liked LC, but his gravelly moaning leaves me unable to understand a single word of the lyrics. Ditto for Bob Dylan.

For both the above mentioned, try their early works, before their voices aged.

I'm a long time LC fan, but I'm just the opposite. I prefer his aged voice.

... Okay, I can totally get not liking his music style--everybody has different tastes, but I am not at all sure how his lyrics could be much clearer.

I think that LC, Mark Knopfler and Roger Waters all have similar 'aged' voices, especially in the early 1990's.
(ie. albums: "the Future", "On Every Street", "Amused to Death")

(I think MK's voice has actually gotten better since he quit smoking).

// csb: my parents and i were watching a movie ("the Life of David Gale") earlier this year. "The Future" (the song) by LC was in the movie. a few seconds into the song, my mom asked me "is that Mark Knopfler?"

Listening to a Leonard Cohen album is like going outside in Montreal midwinter during a power outage to smoke a Du Maurier and getting impaled through the skull with an giant icicle.

Like Tom Waits, his early voice is pretty but forgettable, but the destroyed, worn quality of his mature voice is perfect for the lyrics he sings

I've made it a personal mission of mine to own every book of his poetry that isn't an anthology. Some of them are trickier to find than others, but I've got them all.

It's really interesting to know that Master Song, Suzanne, Avalanche, and others were poems long before they were songs, and to see if and how they'd changed from writing to recording.

Please don't let this be some sort of "duets" sort of thing with modern artists like Santana did. That's all I ask.

Also, I have this weird version of "The Future" on MP3 that has an audio clip at the end of what sounds like Mel Brooks yelling "Cut!" a bunch of times at the end. It could have been from a movie but I'm at a loss to figure out what one. Anyone have an idea?

That would be the Trent Reznor edit of the song from the soundtrack he produced for the soundtrack to Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers". That's Robert Downey, Jr. you hear and not Mel Brooks.

It omits about 3-4 verses from the original studio version.

as for the FA, I'm inspired to smile about this.
