He isn't even punk enough for a Spice Girls movie. He's about as punk as Rainbow Brite.

Avril Lavigne is an adorable little poser. But she's a girl, she gets a pass. A vampire poser playing a punk poser....that could result in poser overload.

Actually, it would make more sense to ask if Avril Lavigne is punk enough to play Billie Joe Armstrong in a Green Day movie.

Are they actually making this into a movie, or is it just loose talk at this point?

Before it was co-opted, "punk" used to be an old record store term referring to any amateur recording. Since 99% of punk's sacred cows are recorded and distributed professionally... well, you get the picture.

Oh, it's for the overrated American Idiot rock opera turned musical, which they're now making into a movie. There's only a few acts to pull off the rock opera thing, and Green Day isn't one of them.

wait what?

this turns my notions on its head.

1. I thought Suicide wasn't around until the mid to late 70's.
2. I thought the term 'punk' was coined in relation to a type of music in 1975 in Peter Hammill's liner notes for his album "Nadir's Big Chance"

/but having just read their wiki, i stand corrected:
They were the first band to use the term punk to describe themselves, which they had adopted from an article by Lester Bangs. Some of their earliest posters use the terms "punk music" and "punk music mass".
Years active 1970-present

yeah, who woulve thought lewdux did something else aside from defending Lady Gaga... but it seems that 1970 is correct, although being part of the "new york underground art scene"can have a pretty broad meaning,.... And it is either sad or a show of persistance that it took them SEVEN YEARS to release their first album

but what a great album it is

Sadly I saw the musical last year as my husband farking adores the American Idiot album and insisted we go when we went to New York last year. We didn't even get the main cast as it was being all punk as fark and performing on that super-edgy America's Got Talent show. It wasn't horrible--everybody sang well--but there wasn't really anything resembling a plot. It was basically a well-done karaoke, complete with the main character using Billie Joe Armstrong's fake British singing accent.

No, not Hitler. The Velvet Underground.

indeed. I wonder if it took them that long to come up with songs, maybe they toured them extensively first.
or maybe record label after record label turned them down and it took 7 years for one to say yes.

good lord, if their debut was released in 1971 instead of 1977..... that would've been mindblowingly ahead of their time.
like a American "Krautrock" type band. (ie. Can, Kraftwerk)

To be fair, the album itself doesn't really have a plot either. Guy lives in the suburbs and is bored of his life so he moves out to the city. He does some random stuff in the city, gets bored again, and moves back to the suburbs. That's about it.

/still a great album though
//just not a punk album

Funny you say that, I spent a good hour listening to Suicide (first album) on youtube.
And yup, I listened to "23 Minutes Over Brussels". I don't know who to feel worse for. the audience or Suicide.
It was pretty out-there to have them open for Elvis.... i bet that the audience didn't expect something like Suicide to be the opening act, or at the very least know who they were. it sounded like there was a few american dudes in the audience by the recorder (audience recording) who clapped and shouted enthusiasm at Suicide, even some English chap, that was nice. The rest of the audienceseemed to boooooo and jeer the whole time between songs. they even chanted "ELVIS ELVIS ELVIS" during a song or two. Meanwhile poor Suicide was just trying to play their music for the people :(
Towards the end, somebody stole one of the two Suicide guys' mic and the vocalist verbally abused the audience and pleaded with them to give it back. (they wanted to play "frankie teardrop').
An american guy asks "What happened?" and the british bloke replies " they stole their f***ing microphone, that's what's f****ing happened!!"
I think they gave up and ran off stage in a huff, judging from the mic not being given back, and a loud cheering and "YAY" from the audience then the tape stops.

supposedly Elvis Costello played a quick, angry set and left early, which incited a riot.

I rather like the way he decided to start trolling the twihards, and no matter how much he tried, none of them could figure out they were being trolled. It takes a certain amount of cojones to insult the author of the book that made you famous, admit you only auditioned because you wanted to play a vampire and didn't bother to read the script to find out how ridiculous the story is, and to troll and openly mock the fan base that's made you rich and famous, and to actually get away with it.
