TFA seems to think the "J-Pop hour" skit was offensive? I thought it was hilarious because it was making good snarky fun of weeaboos...

Overall though, not much Halloween content for a Halloween episode.

Another liter complaining about what one liter says on a public message forum?
If you don't like hearing someone else's opinion, pony up the $5 and see how the other half lives, put the users you don't like/agree with on ignore, or STFU, you ignorant, arrogant, judgmental twat.

The simple fact that an SNL thread only has 8 comments in it, at least 2 of which imply or say outright that SNL sucks rhino ass, should be telling you something...namely that SNL sucks rhino ass for all but a relatively few number of people on Fark. Wrestling threads get over 1000 comments per thread, in comparison....wrestling FFS! And don't go all "That is not a fair comparison" on me, it is a very fair comparison...two live skit comedy shows. The only differences are that RAW's skits are all about wrestling and they actually hire talented actors to perform them.

Mostly painful to watch, weekend update is ok besides that maybe one funny sketch a week. The writing is horrible. Every sketch the same, some goofy quirk repeated over and over.

It was this realization that caused me to abandon the program. The formula is to repeatedly show unfunny characters. This gives the impression that they are both funny and popular. Using these unfunny, unpopular characters, they produce shiatty films.

Anna Faris is hilarious when she's playing a ditzy, dopey blonde. She's this generation's Teri Garr.

Mad_Radhu: It was a weak episode overall, but I did enjoy the GOP debate skit. Especially the Ron Paul bit at the end.

Yeah, that was a good one. BTW one of my first greenlights from 10 years ago was for an SNL 'live as you watch it' thread, because I had noticed that the SNL News segment had been stealing headlines from Fark. I haven't watched it in years till this year, but it'd definitely improved a lot in all that time. Which ain't saying much, because 10 years ago their skits were complete and utter shiat.

Yeah, EW seems to have really missed the point of that skit, that weeaboos are almost a modern version of Al Jolson was in blackface. They both mean well, but in the end that expression of love for that culture just comes off as a little insensitive.

I was having a bit of a go at you, but your reasons for not watching are absolutely valid. I don't watch regularly either. God bless teh interwebs so that we can watch the choice cuts.
But, I truly believe you are doing yourself a great disservice by completely dismissing all that is going on w/ the SNL crew.
I believe there is more talent than not on that show, and that is how it has always been. And, sometimes the talent make bad movies, or, fall into a routine. That's a shame, but I don't think it is out of the ordinary. I'll dance like a monkey for $10 million, I think many of us will.
But, we've got SO many more information and entertainment resources available to us than we did 20 years ago, and ways to access it.
Still, I know where you are coming from.

TL;DR: SNL still makes talented performers.

Even then, man. It's difficult to even access the "Choice cuts". Try finding the "You think you're better than me" sketch from the David Duchovny episode. Unless you recorded it when it aired, you'll never see it again. Some things get cut and just vanish. I've been in contact with both NBC and Broadway Video (Lorne's production company) and I have discovered that there is simply no way to legally view much of this material. It's a shame.

I actually thought the song about lying to your man was pretty damn funny. And the digital short was one of their best recently.

If anyone can say, honestly, that the new featured players (Taran, Vanessa, Paul and Jay) are not hilarious, then they haven't been paying attention.

The current cast, to me, is one of the strongest that the show has had since I started regularly watching (early 90s was when the show started getting regular air here in Aus), but they are held back by a few things - weak writing, the seeming insistence on making Kristen Wiig the centerpiece (she is funny, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overexposed and has been for the last 3 years) and reliance on the same characters over and over - sure, What's Up With That may get huge laughs one time, but don't roll that shiat out 17 times a season; the only things that should show up every ep are monologue, digital short, Weekend Update and musical performance.

SNL isn't for geeks to watch and comment on line about like giddy schoolgirls.
It's for teh blue collar workers who can barely stay awake that late, while consuming beer/pot, so their endorphines can get a rise before they pass out, so they wak up feeling like they did something other than sit on their asses for a once a week, well deserved rest.

I actually still like SNL, but I hate the characters she always plays. They're not funny, and they're all written from the same "stupid in a really annoying way" template. Bridesmaids made up for it though. If she has to be annoying on SNL for a while to make movies like that, so be it.

2011-10-17 03:31:45 PM
I dunno.

For the last two years I thought SNL was getting good again. The actors at least are pretty good (minus the godawful annoying Wiig... though that could possibly be the writers fault. I just can't stand her Gilly/Secret Word Actress/Shanna/Lawrence Welk Freaky Girl/Folk Singer Who Forgot To Write A Song characters, they make me gag).

But this year... man they must have lost a few good writers or something, because this year has been terrible so far. Absolutely painful.

No, it was perfectly fine the way it was. Kenan is farrrrr from overexposed - apart from What's Up With That? and Grady WIlson, who else does he have? And even then, you can't put money on his characters showing up every show, sometimes multiple times an ep. With Wiig, you can.
