That's an assertion, not an opinion. Example: "Last night a convenience store was robbed." That's an assertion. "It doesn't matter whether Cain specifically said that we should fry Mexicans or shoot them, he calls for killing them, and therefore considers illegal border crossing to be a capital crime." If the journalist said that Cain said something, and Cain didn't, the journalist either made a mistake, or lied. But at no point did he express an opinion.
