Fairfax Avenue as night fell Friday, on a mash-up Los Angeles block catering to religious Jews and hungry hipsters

"Religious Jews and the Hungry, Hungry Hipsters". That's a band name right there.

or maybe "Hungry Jews and the Religious Hipsters".

You didn't buy actual goose foie gras. Publix sells several types of duck/pork pate and/or mousse. One of the brands (forgot the name) is pretty OK. The one with 1% truffles. Real honest-to-crap foie gras is way too expensive for Publix to carry.

This is actually great news for the foie gras industry, as prices in California for the stuff will triple. There are quite a few upscale restaurants that still serve it while keeping it off the menu. Ask your server if there is any chance of some being available in the kitchen. If the server gets indignant, you're probably in the wrong place.

The ban will be overturned in a year or less, just like in Chicago.

Oh, wait, this is California, home of pointless regulations and bans. What was I thinking? Just order some from across the border in Nevada and you'll be all set.

/bans never, ever work
//especially when they're implemented because people decide for you what you should be doing

Mmm, especially on a toasted brioche with a little sour cherry jam.

The whole thing is probably a ploy by Vegas to get Californians to all those celebrity chef restaurants.

To be fair, Publix foie gras comes from Floridian alcoholic chickens with cirrhosis, not genuine geese. They do what they can.

"Good for them," John L. Burton, the former state legislator who sponsored the bill, said when told about the dinner-as-political-protest. "If you give me the address of the restaurant, I'll be outside selling Lipitor so they don't all get heart attacks. This is like what they did before Prohibition: Everyone was giving away the booze. Whatever makes them happy."

And, Senator Numbnuts, how did that work out for your ideological predecessors?

"Foie gras is probably one of my favorite things in the world," said Alexandra Snukal, 30, who lives in Santa Monica.

...and in the other corner we have Alexandra Snukal, who shops for outfits for her fecally incontinent pug at Baby Gap, drives a dented 328i with the E-brake on (left lane doing 30, naturally), and thinks that the ideal gas law governs fiber intake on the South Beach diet that she perennially promises to start "next week".

I recomment a nice Chianti

Of course this ban is going to pop up all over from time to time.

People who usually support the ban: animal rights groups.
People who also support the ban: anyone interested in broadening the market of foie gras.

Better with roasted orphan baby stuffed with exoctic herbs and spices.

I believe you can get this at Bohemian Grove or at Bilderberg group luncheons.

Foie-gras is illegal but not veal?

Stupid ban. Geese are assholes anyway.

Veal is mean though.

2011-10-15 11:24:02 PM
As a Frenchman, I was taught that, except for the people, the world is nothing but ingredients waiting to be made into delicious meals. Foie Gras is absolutely delicious, but i was under the impression that folks do not nail the goose feet to the floor like my grandfather did with his geese.

Caviar is good too. There are lots of other fish eggs that aren't so expensive and also very tasty, however, so it's a waste of money.

Don't really like the texture of fish eggs, or the saltiness. I guess I'm willing to concede that others may enjoy it though.

And you're right on the JW. I bought a bottle of the blue once and it is not worth the money. Gold is very tasty though.

(Yes, I know, real whisky drinkers wouldn't touch blended whisky like JW, or something. But to be honest I like JW Gold or Black over most single malts I've tried)

Shame on you, Californians, for letting your government take away one of your most basics freedoms: that of choosing what to eat for your meals. You set a terrible precedent for the rest of the country.
Also, the comparison with the shark fin soup ban is ridiculous. The birds raised for Foie Gras are not endangered and are treated better than factory-farmed poultry.
