Puts things in different perspective.

2003-09-26 05:10:22 PM
Good, then I should have no trouble trying to hire someone to clean my house for $10/yr.

I guess I should give all my money away, right? fark it. I ain't apologizing. I don't feel bad at all.

2003-09-26 06:14:05 PM
If you make $1000/year, you're still in the top 1/2 of the world.

2003-09-26 06:23:10 PM
Yeah, but I wouldn't be in the top 1 percent if I lived in Thailand. Then again, I can't rent a beach house in the U.S. for $25 a month, either...

2003-09-26 07:10:35 PM
I'm still rich, even though I just got laid off. Wow that makes me feel a whole lot better. Oh, and a small piece of crap house on Long Island with 1/8 of an acre of land goes for 350,000 dollars.

2003-09-26 07:23:25 PM
Horsecrap. This puts the poor slobs that work for Walmart that make $15k/year in the top 10%.

2003-09-26 07:24:34 PM
They said I didn't make enough money to even use a computer. I just spent a third of my salary on a Powerbook 540c.

/runs off crying.

2003-09-26 07:47:25 PM
it doesn't take into account debt and/or assets though - that would be interesting to see too...

2003-09-26 08:57:19 PM
I like the donation solicitation part too.
Well, there's people ahead of me yet, so when they donate I will too.

/not

2003-09-26 08:57:45 PM
yeah, definitely rich in spirit

/wishing for tick reruns

2003-09-26 08:59:11 PM
I'm 53 millionth !!

Yay?

2003-09-26 08:59:22 PM
Hmmm.....

/thought I was supposed to be happier

2003-09-26 08:59:56 PM
I don't get how it calculates hourly wages.
I sure don't make $34.00 an hour.

2003-09-26 09:00:36 PM

It's kind of sad, I was reading in national geographic awhile back how 3 billion people live on less than 2 bucks a day. Ew.

2003-09-26 09:01:51 PM
Probably because of the fact that the US is the richest nation in the world? DUH.

2003-09-26 09:01:54 PM
i'm rich beyond my wildest dreams.
/just where is the money?

2003-09-26 09:02:03 PM
I entered $91 and i'm still richer than 219,277,108 other people.

This equates to less than 5 cents an hour.

2003-09-26 09:02:20 PM
representing the 100,000+!

2003-09-26 09:02:53 PM
Wow! I am in the %2.18 bracket of earners (40K a year) and yet show up as in the top %98 in their bar graph...Huh? Guess those tax cuts skewed the results.

2003-09-26 09:03:32 PM
Something's missing--if you say 0 you still aren't the lowest.

2003-09-26 09:04:03 PM
Number-mashing is fun!

Please consider donating just a small amount of your enormous wealth to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $5.547149002300092e+33)

2003-09-26 09:04:11 PM
57,188,565 woo hoo!

2003-09-26 09:04:39 PM
im in the top 5%!

2003-09-26 09:04:50 PM
Something's missing--if you say 0 you still aren't the lowest.

Because you still have your health.

2003-09-26 09:04:52 PM
Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $12.5)

There are 5,486,272,493 people poorer than you.
You are the 513,727,507 richest person in the world.

GODDAMNIT!

I make 8.25 an hour!

Send ME your goddamn money!

2003-09-26 09:05:15 PM
I'd love to give a ref to the SubGenius joke, so I'll paraphrase ...

To most of the people on Earth, Slack means having a decent meal.

Great how they are so funny and so meaningful simultaneously. Praise Dobbs.

2003-09-26 09:05:28 PM
I'd feel that this thing was more objective it it didn't, you know, try to guilt-trip you into donating money down below.

2003-09-26 09:05:33 PM
So according to that, half the population of the world makes less than $850 US a year.

I personally would think about picking up a second job.

I don't get how it calculates hourly wages.
I sure don't make $34.00 an hour.

Because we all work 27 hour weeks, don't we?

2003-09-26 09:06:52 PM
I was just thinking along these lines today. I was thinking if I'd trade spots (me = loads of debt) with a guy, say in Bangladesh, who has no debt, but lives in a mud hut and owns only a towel and a bowl. Then I suddenly understood that debt is maybe not the end of the world...

2003-09-26 09:06:54 PM
If only the cost of living were included in these calculations. Then they might be meaningful.

2003-09-26 09:07:22 PM
According to their figures, the bottom 85% of the world's population live on $2182 a year. What's not immediately clear is whether this represents their native currency converted into dollars or whether this is a representation of their purchasing power. In many "emerging economies" the cost of living is lower as well, so a straight translation to dollars may misrepresent the situation. What I mean is that in many countries you could live like a king on $20,000 a year, whereas in the U.S. it may be close to the poverty level (though I don't remember what the US poverty level is at the moment).

2003-09-26 09:07:39 PM
Also it costs a hell of a lot less to live in other places. Not really comparing apples to apples here.

2003-09-26 09:08:13 PM
Type in a number less than $90:

If you are earning less than $90 a year itd be unfair to ask you to donate money to Care International, if however, you actually earn more than this it may be worth re-calculating your position

Donate? If "Care International" asks for money for the poor people, why isn't there a "apply for money" form for the poor people?

2003-09-26 09:08:15 PM
2 CENTS
you can't be, i am 57,188,565. really.

2003-09-26 09:08:22 PM
annawhite-
you forgot about slaves and corporations like worldcom.

2003-09-26 09:08:31 PM
oh yeah, and the sound of denial is pretty loud in here. Face it, even when you factor in your debt, your cost of living, your whatever, you still are WAY better off than the vast majority on earth. Admit it.

2003-09-26 09:08:59 PM
Well, the site skews their main point. While people do get paid more in the US, things do cost more. There is a trade off. Try reading "The Jungle" for a more detailed look at my point.

2003-09-26 09:09:50 PM
Is this supposed to make me feel bad?

2003-09-26 09:11:12 PM
If you never want to work again then move to russia.

2003-09-26 09:11:32 PM
Only supposed to make you feel bad enough to donate.

2003-09-26 09:11:56 PM
that rocks!

i was having a bad day until i saw that.

2003-09-26 09:11:59 PM
There are more than 1 billion people on earth who make less than a dollar a day.

Sad, scary, sick.

/too lazy to do the tags

2003-09-26 09:12:12 PM
Of course, VoodooKaka. But if they factored in where I live, I wouldn't be in the top .881% of the world. Hell, in this city, I might be in the top 50%.

2003-09-26 09:12:49 PM
Another liberal website brought to you by the Democrat Party of America, Al Queda, The Communist Party, Rev Al Sharpton, The RIAA and your single Mom. Blame America First.

2003-09-26 09:13:06 PM
I think a dollar would go a bit farther in Nigeria than California.

2003-09-26 09:13:14 PM
:( the calculator is not working for me and keeps asking me to put a numbe rin even after I do

anyone else have this problem????

2003-09-26 09:13:30 PM
of course i am "rich" in the world sense........but i do not live in the world.......i live in the US.....and my income don't buy fark

2003-09-26 09:13:33 PM
Sorry, if you earn less than $90 a year we are unable to calculate your position on the richlist.

If this is the case you would be one of the billions of people who earn less than $2 a day. Typically you would also not have access to a computer or an Internet connection.

If you are earning less than $90 a year itd be unfair to ask you to donate money to Care International, if however, you actually earn more than this it may be worth re-calculating your position

:( Now I feel really poor
