If by Occupy protests you mean Pride Parade, then yeah.

Had one here in Victoria (BC, Canada) today. Just a bunch of people with signs milling about; bank managers were out in front of the banks chatting with protesters, answering questions; and cops chatting with people and keeping an eye things. Just your typical Canadian get togeth... er, protest.

Even US cops at a pride parade would shoot into the crowd or something. Hell one NYC cop decked a lady for not getting out of his way fast enough today. God forbid if she had a water gun.

They'd probably shoot the protestor and say they thought it was a real gun. Any investigation would of course fully back up the cop.

True, and in the backwater places, the (probably homophobic) cop would be treated like a hero cleansing evil from the town :(

I actually didn't even bother to go to Vancouver's. I imagine they filled up the Art Gallery square, the union folks were there, various NDPers, the anti-war people said anti-war things, the homelessness advocates noted the housing crisis continues, a couple of people totally reeked of marijuana and possibly had Free Marc Emery signs, and it was basically like every other protest in Vancouver in the past 10 years. If it was a good day, David Suzuki or Libby Davies might have shown up.

I'm not even checking the news to find out if I'm right.

There are only TWO things wrong with Canada.

Pretentious people: "Oh no what will the Americans think??"
The Farking Cold.

Other than that, game on. If you want folks to stay with while you get on your feet, I know people. :)

That cop would mace himself in the face on purpose, yell to his buddy's about it, and give the police reasonable cause to crush them all.

I may be sending you an email. I might be pulling a career change that would let me live in either the US or Canada, I'm asking for official guidance on whether my new situation would count as "employment" for purposes of moving up there. If so the questionnaire thingy on their website says I should be eligible to move to Canada, at least until their skilled labor criteria change.

Well since that made you want to move to Canada, now doesn't the knowledge that the picture was at a gay pride parade in Canada make you want to move to Canada and be gay?

Our occupy (insert name of Canadian city here) protests are a bit lacking in focus.

We don't really have a 1% to be pissed with the way the U.S. does. When the sub-prime mortgage melted down American's economy, we were essentially unscathed due to very strict bank regulations. Our bankers couldn't have pulled that shiat even if they wanted to.

We did get hit with the recession, but not the foreclosures and a lot of the other bad shiat.

So I guess the Canadian protests are mostly about injustice in a broader sense. Like economic, war, inequality etc? This is pretty awesome, too.

But that's why we're not calling for the heads of the bankers quite yet, in case anyone was wondering.

And yep, pretty sure that shot's from Pride. During that and TIFF, it's like the cops are EXPECTED to party a bit.

Hey bobbette,

You might have been pleasantly surprised. I know a lot of people here in Ottawa were. It wasn't the same old union/ndp/marijuana folks, there wasn't a march and a bunch of speakers haranguing the crowd.

the people who have been working this past week to make it happen are young and energized, the unions have given some material support, but are not trying to take the stage. There were no speakers, but instead a People's Assembly took place. It took a long time, but they agreed that all decisions would be made by direct democracy. There were facilitators to help keep things moving, but everyone agreed to a framework for making decisions, and they started our by agreeing on the place of occupation, and making other logisitical decisions.

These people are serious about being here for a while, and aren't in a rush to just present their demands to no-one in particular and go home. They're making a plan, agreeing to it as they go along, and are in it for the long haul. They've set up committees, workshops, training, etc.

If Vancouver is doing things the same way, you should give them a chance.

Also, check out the "people's microphone" - no podium, no person, group or leadership who have the mic and everyone listens. One person speaks, those closest who can hear repeat in unison, and the next who can hear repeat, and it spreads out in waves. Again it takes time, but everyone can hear, and no-one gets to shout anyone else down.
