I'd cower too if I were driving a Chevy.

The two things wrong with that picture are the lack of ire on the face of the driver and the lack of smug on the face of the biker.

unless thats in england or she's delivering mail, she's just a passenger anyway.

GM: women should be passengers and let the men folk drive

Smug sneering Chevy owners don't want to see America succeed.

The only people who have money anymore are sociopaths, so more and more ads target that demographic.

It probably means the source of the image of the ad is from the BikePortland site, to give credit to them.

I've owned 2 GM Vehicles, my parents owned 3 at different times, and I regularly drove 2 owned by different employers, plus I worked briefly in the car rental business.

While many of the GM vehicles were not terrible, they all were not at the top of my list, and a couple had the lemony scent right from the beginning.

It's a stupid ad, but it doesn't make me any less likely to buy a GM product; they managed to do that all on their own.

/The plural of my anecdote is data enough for me...

To me that girl's face says, "Damn, look at that guy. I wanna ride his dick like a bike."

I bike commute, and I've always driven Chevy trucks.

WHAT NOW, GENEROUS MOTORS??

2011-10-15 09:12:31 PM
He should really be using both hands to control that bike, seeing as he's like a half foot away from the car in the photo.

Guys on bikes have small dicks and smaller minds, so of course he's hiding in shame...

1. Like an entry level Chevy is going to impress anybody.
2. A cyclist has an advantage over a doughy car driver in a college bar situation, assuming the bar is within walking distance of the dorm.
3. Women hate cyclists in general because cycling eats up too much time.
4. A good bike costs as much as a college hooptie, so the guy has already done the math.

I drive a Chevy Aveo (barely...I'm 6'8") and am giving it up to ride the bus. Where do I fit in this?

Considering my 2005 Cobalt "bonged" at me (the sound, not the waterpipe) with a display of "POWER STEERING" just this evening (even though the electric assist motor was replaced under a recall that I actually didn't qualify for because of a parts shortage & no "POWER STEERING" warning on the display at that time, but fortunately the pinion completely separated from the rack while I was backing into a parking space - even though the car was babied by my 65yr-old father-in-law whom I inherited it from), yeah, I would tend to agree with their ad title.

How many miles does it have?

My 2005 Cobalt is sitting at 122k... I'm wondering if I should expect it to disintegrate any day now or what.

You know, somehow I think that dedicated urban bikers are not GM's target demographic anyway.

My Marin racing bike is probably better built than anything on the GM line.

They went about it wrong. Offer a free bike rack and Sierra Club sticker with the purchase of an SUV to gather the college crowd.

Britney Spear's Speculum: Why is GM targeting students in college?

Because many parents are willing to buy their kids cars, or pay for the down payment. Further, 25% of college students are going to leave college within a year, hopefully enter the workforce, and thus, may need a car. I knew a lot of people who landed their post-college jobs during senior year and they (or their parents) bought cars before they left college.

That being said, the better question is why is GM targeting college students with ads for pickup trucks? I bet that by senior year, most college students have a pretty good appreciation of disposable income thanks to having to save up to buy beer, and they're more likely to buy an uncool fuel efficient car rather than something they think will help them get laid.

2011-10-16 12:39:47 AM
I for one know that college girls regularly scorn physically fit men with high stamina who try to help the environment for doughy fat guys who can't walk a block without wheezing and own shiatty plastic domestic cars. It's just in the female psyche to seek the head of the pack alpha wolf type, you know, guys with manboobs and a layer of pudge so thick their penises are innies. Cue said pudge lords raging about bicyclists in 5, 4, 3, 2,1...

Drive your car slowly (reverse was when I heard it the most) & turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. If you hear cracking or "clacking" I'd take a look underneath. The pinion is only pressed in & the electric motor is between you & it. The motor masked the slop I would've normally felt while the pinion was getting loose & sloppy (not to mention the car's handling couldn't have gotten any worse).

GM Australia, AKA Holden - the best thing out of Oz?

3.bp.blogspot.com

IRT the advert - sucky, sucky, suck suck suck. I can believe GM put it out as their reputation is very, very bad. It looks like something from the 60s we'd have a chuckle about, so maybe they have a good SOH.

Reality Sucks. Having to make car payments AND education loan payments while unable to get a job in your field because the market crashed and no one is retiring to make those gaps you were told were destined to be there when you looked into this field 5 years ago sucks even harder.

My mom's '06 Cobalt is on its fourth or fifth steering column. Also, she had to get new tires at 12,000 miles.

As someone who isn't afraid of driving something from GM, I'm getting a kick out of the ad.

What I currently drive, a 2nd generation Olds Aurora:
i540.photobucket.com

What it reported as the range on the highway (no, that's normal):
i540.photobucket.com

What I'm not getting a kick out of is the general pressure to get rid of the affordable muscle - in favor of exotics for the few, and bling-filled European golfcarts for the rest. This can be seen evidently at Ford - where about everything looks like it came from Europe - leaving few American-sized vehicles left(since they're axing the Panther platform and E-series vans).

/GM doesn't like making small cars, and it shows through their large use of captive imports.
//How about letting them make large cars that people can afford?
///Not everyone is a Prius-driving, granola-eating, Aspen-is-Mecca environmentalist.

The only redeeming quality is that the farking enviromentalists haven't touched Holden. Now if they could make a car with a decent V6 and A/T for well under $20k(with an 8-cylinder for less than $25k), things wouldn't be bad.

/The growl of a non-turbo'd 6 or 8 cylinder engine is not reserved for the few

I think the worst thing about this ad is that it tries to get college students to take on another big pile of debt. What does a college student need with a brand new car vehicle?

Wow - I have pity for you. I rented one of those once. I did ask for the cheapest thing they had though so it was my own fault. It was like riding a skateboard with a cardboard box strapped to it.

as someone who enjoys both driving and cycling, i think this ad is a terrible idea and makes me less likely to consider GM products. it is also at complete odds with GM's attempts at promoting environmentally friendly transportation.

cycling and driving are not and do not have to be at odds with each other, just ask VW (remember the Jetta Trek?), Jeep, BMW, and Peugeot

My 12 year old Opel is just fine mechanically, although all the accessories are definitely hitting the fritz. Like having to pull off the fan control knob to turn on the the rear defroster and then put it back on. A lot of retarded "features" as well, like having no power locks (okay) but then making it so it automatically unlocks the driver's door when you close it locked.

GM has always had a seething hostility towards ANY form of transportation other than cars, Cars, CARS!
