Yeah, it's just a simple algorythm of "if [ such phrase ] is in question, answer with [ a ], sometimes alternate with [ b ]", but I guess simpletons get amazed with even the smallest things.

I don't think I'll ever want to talk TO my phone, as opposed to talking to somebody over my phone. I can technically do this with my phone for directions and such, but I tried it once and just felt so odd doing it that I've never done it again.

Maybe I'll get used to it when it becomes common.

It'll be interesting to see what winds up happening with Siri. Either it'll catch on if Apple works hard round the clock to improve it or it'll be remembered as a pointless novelty that Apple used as its main selling point for a rehashed iPhone4.

Or maybe it'll go the way of the iPod Hi-Fi that Jobs creamed all over during the keynote intro and was then seemingly erased from history. I still remember watching Jobs trying his damndest to hype this thing for $349:

The amazing bit is the programmers thought to include them. That was more work than the normal effort.

I think that Siri, or something like it, is a sign of things to come. Who wouldn't want to have a computer in their pocket that is capable of acting as a personal assistant? Technology is about making our easy first world lives even easier; I for one would probably get more use out of my calendar if I had a computer to update it for me, and the thought of being able to read and dictate texts via voice command while driving would be a welcome addition to any phone I should think. And the fact that it can find me escorts on the fly? Call that the cherry on my consumer-sundae.

What I look forward to is the day when it can make reservations for me at a restaurant without my having to call someone or use open table. The future is a mundane one, my friends!

Funny stuff.

Voice commands are here to stay, if only for things like responding to text messages when you can't type. Apple's implementation appears, to me, to already be better than Google's with no further improvements.

I just wish they'd fix the music app in iOS5 on the iPad. Coverflow is now apparently the only way to view your music. Big pictures of album art and tiny text underneath that image, all laid out in a grid format. That's one of the reasons why Scott Forstall is such an insufferable coontnozzle. Instead of adding new features and letting users decide which they want to use, he tries to decide what's best for everyone based on his personal tastes.

I realize all the nostalgia'ing out the ass designers at Apple yearn for the days where cover art was a big part of music, but it just isn't anymore. Find a group of people under the age of 25 and ask how many of them can identify their music based on cover art without text. A whole generation grew up on Napster/PirateBay/etc and viewed all their music as text lists, particularly on Apple's f*cking ipod lineup. Not everything has to be some kind of "oh yea man future, everything is visual yea man" hippie throwback. At least leave the original text interface for the music player as an option. Or better yet just put it back the way it was, where you could switch between the standard, easy to use layout and the "I'm high and need to see lots of colors" coverflow.

/end rant

HotDogDay82: I think that Siri, or something like it, is a sign of things to come.

In theory so were MS Bob, Newton, etc.

It all comes down to execution. Based on reviews my guess is that Siri is better than any other voice control out there, but that's probably not enough. Think of all the possible things you could want or need to say. The second-best thing out there probably understands .0001% of it. Siri can beat that by 1000x and still be far from enough, and that's not even factoring in how slowly and clearly you probably have to speak for it to be reliable.

Oh yeah, without any doubt. I don't think that Siri is going to be the be-all-and-end-all of voice controlled anything, but I do think that it is a step forward in the right direction. In fact, I'd be willing to say that the legacy of Siri wont be in how many commands it understands but that it succeeded in introducing "voice controls" to millions of people who never thought to use it before; their dollars will move the market to invest more capital in voice R&D which will, one day, lead to a voice controlled something that isnt totally awful and frustrating

I agree with this.

My problem is how it'll probably become the "it" interface and companies will start forcing it as the default thing people want. I can even imagine the ads: "Look Ma! No hands!".

Companies should understand we want a variety of interfaces for our devices. I'd like to have a device that I can touch control, then if I need to get my hands busy I can go to voice control seamlessly (I can imagine it'll be pretty useful for porn, which would be for the better since porn is what piston-pushes progress)

I know I'm probably asking for too much but eh, having high standards is what leads to progress.

Goofy fun canned answers aside, it's great being able to say "text my wife and tell her I'll meet her at 8" and have it create not only a text but an event if I wish. Or "give me directions to the nearest best buy". With more to come, hopefully an API for other apps.

And the canned answers are pretty funny.

My old HTC Incredible and my new HTC Thunderbolt both have this built in.

OK, so I have to say my wife's name instead of "my wife", but it works flawlessly. As far as navigation goes, I can hit the voice search button, say "Navigate to Best Buy" and it will open up Google Maps with Navigation, grab the closest Best Buy to me, and start navigation with voice.

I think Google/Android have really failed at marketing here-- I watched the release for the 4S and thought, "man, I wish I could set an alarm with my voice!" I thought about it, picked up my phone, and said "Set alarm for 6am tomorrow" and --what do you know-- it did it!

Old tech is old.

No, 42 is the answer to the ultimate question. The question of life, the universe and everything. It is not the meaning of life.
