I need to try that stuff one of these days. Noticed my mom keeps some at her house, so she must like it.

2011-10-15 11:47:18 AM
it goes on toast quite well.... toast is healthy. counts right?

2011-10-15 11:49:34 AM
Peanut butter and Nutella sandwich FTW.

2011-10-15 11:49:52 AM
I first tried it back in the 80's when living in Europe. Stuff was huge over there but when I cam back to the states, it was almost impossible to find. Now that it's caught on, you can find it everywhere.

Nutella and banana flambe crepes

Every time I eat Nutella I wonder why it's not as big in the US as peanut butter. My guess is that Americans think that anything popular in other countries must be disgusting, a la Vegemite.

+1

Hits the spot when one's hungry and lazy, which I am quite frequently.

From TFA:

The first two ingredients listed on the label of chocolate-hazelnut spreads are sugar, followed by palm oil, which means these ingredients outweigh all others. When you break down the numbers you'll find it contains 100 calories per tablespoon, and more than 50 percent of that comes from fat. While there are some heart-healthy fats from nuts, one-third is the artery-clogging saturated kind. As for the sugar, it's not looking much better - nearly 5 teaspoons per serving!

I hate it when stupid writers mix units, especially when they mix meaningful units (tablespoons) with meaningless without context units (servings).

2011-10-15 11:54:49 AM
Nutella is good stuff.

2011-10-15 11:55:07 AM
I'd love to try the stuff, but hazelnuts give me an urgent desire to scratch my throat and inner ears with a bottle brush.

2011-10-15 11:57:54 AM
Yes, it's unhealthy. So? I'm still gonna eat it.

2011-10-15 11:58:44 AM
German friend gave me some Nutella on toast when I was 15, I've been a big fan since.

/So lecker, ich wollte ihrer Mutter zu schlagen.
//or something like that.

The correct answer is "who cares?" It's yummy, I want it.

Come to think of it, after seeing that picture I may never eat anything ever again.

2011-10-15 12:01:59 PM
Nutella sucks.

2011-10-15 12:02:11 PM
The sad thing is that this campaign to make Nutella sound healthy actually works. I've heard many people tell me that it was healthy and delicious. It's just like those breakfast cereals that are loaded with sugar, they say they're part of a nutritious healthy breakfast but they aren't actually. My general rule of thumb is if its delicious and loaded with sugar and/or oil odds are it's not healthy

"not to be confused with straight up health food"

WHAT? A chocolate sugary topping isn't heath food? NEXT YOU'LL TELL ME MOUNTAIN DEW ISN'T A HEALTHY SPORTS DRINK!

Er, maybe for the reason specified in the article -- the first two ingredients are sugar and palm oil?

When I was a kid in Germany in the70's it was their "peanut butter" equivalent. Hazelnuts are their common nut like peanuts here. It's not a "health food", but it is a healthier alternative to other high energy/calorie quick foods. Something that you can eat quick and provide a better meal replacement than a candy bar and/or bag of chips.

A big problem with obesity is not only knowing what to eat, but in what manner certain foods are to be eaten. Milk for instance should be considered a "meal" in itself rather than a "beverage" to compliment a meal.

Came in here to say something similar to this.
The fact that this article was even written is one of the reasons obesity is an epidemic. It's chocolate and sugar... how on earth would it be healthy??

I could have gone a day without seeing that photo.

Look, idiots, there is no food that is "healthy". The best that food can do is give you all the vitamins and minerals and calories you need to not get sick or starve. Food will not affect your health as long as you get all the nutrients you need and as long as you don't take in too much calories. That said, Ferrero, the company behind Nutella, is trying to push their products as being "healthy". But, using the information above, anyone with half a brain knows that this is of course bullcrap.

Nutella was invented after WWII when chocolate in short supply and some Italian dude found out that if you just take a tiny amount of cocoa and mix it with sugar and grease and some roasted hazel nuts, you get a lot of the same flavor while using very little cocoa.

Nutella is about 50% fat and 50% sugar. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't eat too much of it, just like peanut butter or jam.

Molavian: Nutella is good stuff.

This guy (new window) sure seems to like it.

2011-10-15 12:12:34 PM
I would like to point out that there are at least two different "kinds" of Nutella: The Italian version and the American made in New Jersey. The Imported kind from Italy is much better, creamier and richer. You can tell the difference because it comes in a glass jar vs a plastic one, and all the words are in Italian.

That is all.

mike4688: Mmm... Everything's better with chocolate on it.

Aaaand I almost just got kicked out of this Panera because a looky loo was shoulder browsing and saw that... wonderful... naked chocolate spokesperson.

I grew up addicted to the stuff. Took me about 25 years to figure out it's not healthy, trying to cut the habit.

Also, palm oil comes from cutting down tropical rainforests. Not good.

Sure, it's a part. Look at the pic on the commercials when they say that. 1/2oz of cereal, 8oz of orange juice, 8 of milk, turkey bacon, unbuttered toast, a 2 egg-white omelet cooked in a microwave, a salad, an apple and a handful of flintstones chewables. Thus, part of a healthy breakfast.

My rule is don't eat 4lbs of anything 8 times a day.

Or spam. Or peanut butter, nutella, jam and spam

The label shows it as part of a healthy breakfast when spread thinly on a piece of toast, accompanied by a bowl of cereal, a glass of milk, a glass of juice, and at least two pieces of fruit.

Of course, if you can't tell by the name "chocolate spread" that it's not healthy, the picture isn't going to do you much good. Unless you can't read, I guess.

Since when is toast good for you? You gotta go into eating a Nutella sandwich knowing you're not doing it to be healthier. You're doin' it 'cause it makes your mouth feel good.

BACON is the most perfect food, your argument is invalid.

Well the fact it looks like liquid diarrhea may play a big part in limiting its popularity.

Nutritionally it's not that different from peanut butter, bit more sugar.

*Peanut butter is typically gonna have about 400% the protein of Nutella. So if that's something you're into, which I is.

Farkin'round: VvonderJesus: Nutella sucks.

Few years ago I bought some because it seemed logical due to my tastes that it would be something I'd find particularly yummy. Half the jar ended up in the garbage.

I discovered it because my brother married a German woman, and she had it sent over from Germany, because she does like her chocolate. I like it, and I eat a ton of peanut butter too. A nutella and peanut butter sandwich is like a big rock of fat in your stomach.

REALLY? Its spreadable chocolate. WTF did everyone think they were eating?

I understand this, but people only hear the part they want to hear. Furthermore it is intentionally misleading and some people just don't see the problem with eating this junk.

Heamer: Peanut butter and Nutella sandwich FTW.

I remember eating those for lunch when I was in elementary school and was throughly made fun of for doing so. Partly because nobody in school ate those, and partly because it was unhealthy. The wisedom of kids.

I like chopping up apples and using nutella as a dip.
