Funny, just yesterday I was at a local drug store, and what gum did I see being sold? Beeman's.

True story:

Because Slick Goodlin lost his seat after trying to take the US Air Force for some serious coin, he never, not even one time, flew Mach 1. He joked that he was thinking about taking the Concorde but never did.

The moral of the story: when you have the chance to make history, just do it and don't be an asshole. You can make money from fame, but unless you're ridiculously rich you can't get fame from money.

I'm not sure by any means, but I've often wondered if he isn't the cyeager that posts comments on the Sacramento Bee website all the time. The comments certainly seem like they're coming from a cranky old man, and he is kind of local,
Certainly wouldn't be surprising.

I am glad that one of the characters on the ground said, "We did it! We finally broke the sound barrier!" If one of the characters had not said that so clearly, I would not have known what was going on. Thank you American scriptwriter!

Yeager is a douche of epic proportions. Also, George Welsh did it first in an F-86 two weeks before Yeager did.

The purpose of that line was as a prelude to the next one about the russians and national security. It wasnt telling us what we knew, that line was telling us what couldnt be said inthat context.

My interview with the General in 2007: http://computerguys.unisrv.net/EAA/2007/Audio/Saturday/gen%20yeager%20 7-27097.MP3

He started out pretty condescending, based on my appearance (I have a ponytail), but after the interview, he said I was the best interviewer he'd had since Larry King and he gave me signed copies of both his autobiographies.

Was at an air show at Edwards AFB, southern Cali east of LA a few years back, roughly 2005. Even at his age, they let Chuck Yeager start the show by flying a P-51 Mustang at a low altitude, maybe 500 ft, over the airfield.

At the same time they let an F-16 fly overhead at a little over Mach-1 (and roughly one mile above Chuck), and it delivered a nice sonic boom. POW!!! It doesn't get much better than that.

Been to many air shows, and that was the favorite thing I've seen.

I went to one there also, about the 60th anniversary timeframe. Gen. Yeager and Gen. Joe Engle (X-15/Shuttle) did a flyby, Joe as pilot, Chuck in the back seat, with a sonic boom. They put on a great show at Edwards.

Williams was Marine Corps and Yeager was Air Force, also Yeager didn't serve in Korea. But he was 2nd American to fly a MiG-15 in 1953.

While not disputing the first point, the 2nd is HIGHLY debatable and probably an outright lie.

The X-1 wasn't really a technical achievement, it was a brute force/willing to take the risk achievement. They shaped it like a rifle bullet, put the shortest, strongest wings they could on it, and the biggest rocket engine they could come up with in it. It's still amazing that those wings stayed on.

Now as for the F-86 and its swept wings (which, as is pointed out above, may have broken the sound barrier in a dive while testing weeks before the X-1), we (and the Brits, and the Soviets) can thank a certain central European country (how can you Nazi where I am going with this?)
