Oh please, give me a break. The Pentagon isn't that paranoid.

Yeah, let's all listen to the guy who thinks "digital" and "HD" are the same thing.

2011-10-15 08:26:47 AM
It's amusing how he throws in terms like UHF, Spread Spectrum and HD, without any context. And when i say 'amusing', I really mean 'suspicious'. Could this be a double bluff, by a government shill?

I think This one's better (new window).

2011-10-15 08:32:55 AM
Actually the reason for the rollout was to sell a bunch of TVs to people who already had one. That and the ability to screw with playback and recording so people have to pay more (in theory).

I loved it.
It was much better than cats.
I'm going to see it again and again.

"Subliminal Message is not entirely noticeable, such as a flashed 1 frame message, backwards lyrics and the like."

I want to sleep with your sister, send me her cell phone number.

The opponent founds his argument on the fact that duration of subliminal messages are too quick for the person's brain to be able to process it.

Also send me your banking account login credentials.

However, recent studies prove that despite their fleetingness, subliminal messages do have an impact upon its viewer on a subconscious level. For example, if a word is flashed that is correlated to fear, then the region of the brain where fear is associated will be triggered.

Your suspicions about your wife is correct - she is no longer in love with you and is having an affair with your best friend.

Mind you, sinking the Titanic to kill three passengers is a good one. Of course those three could easily have survived the sinking.....

Oddly enough, searches (at both ispto.gov and google patent search) for the patent number and inventor name referenced in TFA turn up nothing. I'm going to say bullshiat.

/fact-checking. how the fark does it work?

2011-10-15 08:43:50 AM
I'm fine with this seeing as most research not done by Zach Morris shows subliminal messages don't work

2011-10-15 08:44:21 AM
Subliminal messaging has been shown not to work experimentally, but that of course relies upon the scientific community's integrity.

I thought it was to protect the TV conglomerates from law suits because Low Definition TVs cause eye cancer.

Aside from the tiny fact that the government DID NOT GIVE AWAY HD BOXES OR VOUCHERS FOR SUCH. Those were for digital, not HD.

The real reason was, it makes TV look much better. I don't even look at SD channels any more.

I'm not at all suggesting that this is going on, but you'd be naive to think it is either not possible or that no one would do such a thing. I bet many people on this site would use the technology if they had it, so there's no reason to think others wouldn't. Morality is an illusion.

2011-10-15 08:50:52 AM
The real reason is that they wanted to free up the spectrum for other, better uses. Unfortunately this had the side effect of making old people's tvs not work and they are on a fixed income so they aren't going to buy an hdtv. In order to maintain their status as an elected official they had to make a gesture to the old people who weren't going to buy a new tv, yet are the only ones who bother to go vote.

Not only will people spend more for something not much bettter (sometimes worse) than their current setup, but the main appeal of flat panel TVs/Monitors over CRT is that you can fit more flat panels in a smaller space. Much more convenient for travel and storage, which means better profits.

I thought it was because cell phone companies wanted to use those frequencies or something. There was probably some kind of conspiracy. Just follow the money.

To be fair, I found it, because "US Patent #5,1159.703" doesn't exist (notice the extra 1).
Patent #5,159,703 does though, and it's called "Silent subliminal presentation system" which sounds scary!

But remember, just because there is a patent for it, doesn't mean that it works..
There are tons of perpetual motion machines with patents.

Maybe your friend stopped hanging out with you because you seem to think Fark headlines are serious, instead of obviously making fun of the link in question.

Either that, or you're just an idiot who needs a "Welcome to Fark" t-shirt and a cranial enema.

I'm ok with the idea of sinking the Titanic to kill a banker. Just don't expect me to sit through 3 hours of it while Celine Dion warbles in the backgroung.

Alan Alda did a series a few years back, PBS maybe. He was trying out the portable 'memory enhancer' system.
When the computer recognized a person, it displayed their name for 1/3 a second or so, and it would register in your mind.
Just substitute characteristics and there you go. Buy more.

I work in the field putting in waiting room 'digital displays' (HDTVs with a network interface for updating the fluff between ads)..

There's no 'to adjust the silent signal' calibration instructions.. However, they are quite insistent that the audio system be active at all times. Sent me out for $75 service call to put in a $4 splitter so all the TVs would have sound. Buy more.

Technically, possible. Legally, possible. shiat hitting the fan if the stuff ever got proven real, possible. Buy more.

2011-10-15 09:17:24 AM
Ok, so prove it. Record it and have a computer translate it or simply lower the frequency down to human hearing.

The fact that they can auction off the (now unused) UHF and VHF spectrum for $BILLIONS has NOTHING to do with it.

The one thing the conspiracy theorist nutjobs can never wrap their brains around is that the government SUCKS at keeping secret. Nixon couldn't keep his secret tapes secret. Clinton couldn't keep his secret blowjob a secret.

There's no way that a massive conspiracy involving thousands of people would ever remain secret for long. Someone in the know will ALWAYS leak the information for personal gain or personal satisfaction. The probability of a secret remaining secret is inversely proportional to the square of the number of people who know it.

If you don't think what's on TV, as much as I lerve it, is designed to make us follow a certain agenda, one that will benefit the scumbags in power, then you're quite naive. And if you don't think companies/commercials don't sink to the lowest levels possible to part us from our hard-earned dollars, you're going to get reamed harder than those who understand how this works:

ecx.images-amazon.com

One of the most interesting books you'll ever read. You'll never look at advertising the same way again. The disgusting things in ads, designed to be recognized by your subconscious mind, will amaze you!

You've been here that long and you still can't figure out that Fark headlines aren't to be taken seriously?

And then to compound your your ignorance and dickishness, you insult the modmins to having what you obviously don't have?

(That would a "sense of humor" in case you need everything spoonfed to you.)

Wow, it's amazing you have any friends left.

I am not all that worried about subliminal messages. Most people don't seem to be able to grasp or comprehend messages that are screamed right in their faces. There is no need to be all that subtle when manipulating the populace. If you want to influence large number of people you have to yell at the top of your lungs.

The government was not really concerned if we all had health insurance, (we could die). Yet, the government went out of it's way even to subsidize the purchase of converter boxes for everyone who needed one, so we would still have TV?

I didn't read the article, but I was/am suspicious of why they are so sure we have-to-have TV!.

/didn't make the switch

///Blockbuster, Redbox and the public library for the rest.
