Number 10 is how I feel sometimes without any manager telling me so.

After seeing friends getting laid off at defense contractors across the country, with other friends in government jobs getting briefed about possible RIFs inbound, we all are feeling threatened.

Nothing wrong with "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions". Particularly for those who see a problem in everything. Like the graphics designer who balked at having the printer moved further away fron his desk because he thought he was being paid too much to spend time walking an extra 12 feet. I have no patience for whiners. If there's a real problem that's fine, but that's just petty bullshiat.

I had a boss try the 'Let's all just be happy we have jobs'.

Now, I'm the first to admit, the economy isn't doing so hot and things suck for a lot of people. I'm not trying to trivialize that, but, in *context* what he said was utter B.S.

He was talking to a room filled with Engineers. All with a bachelors degree or higher.

It was literally *that* speech that convinced me it was time to quit that job.

I guess the solution there then is to pay him less.

Even if his boss wants 'solutions' instead of 'problems' the employee would just go and complain and present the 'solution' of the company buying him his own printer.

ya might want to try and translate it without using a speak and spell connected to a rabid wombat. There are websites that may just help you out there.

the writer of the article must have never worked an on the clock job, you got it perty easy if those are the only things the boss tells you

2011-10-15 08:41:51 AM
Decent managers have figured out that there is no clock, not for white-collar knowledge workers, anyway. Knowledge workers live, sleep, and eat their jobs. Their e-mail inboxes fill up just as fast after 5:00 p.m. as they do before. Their work is never done, and it's never going to be done.

To me that expectation of always being on the clock is far far worse than being told you can't use facebook. I'm getting paid for 8-5 with an hour for lunch, you better believe I and every salaried employee there stays exactly that long and takes exactly that length of lunch, I've only stayed after to correct a major inbalance in our financial system so far, and we don't even GET work email outside of work.

If your graphic design guy has a problem with a printer that's like your developer having a problem with his computer; you fix it, period.

Total opposite reality where I work...

there are bosses like mine who have a shop full of guys making excellent suggestions to management regarding procedure and or policy, yet get shut down by the bosses cuz he is convinced his way is the only way. So now nobody makes any kind of suggestions about anything as its going to be a waste of time.

Nothing undulates like a wabid wombat. Some say the newer soundcards can. I say nay. Somethings just don't digitize well, regardless of bit rate.

Could also be titled things douche bags say. Quality employees won't be working for you for very long if you are in the habit of saying any of those.

With 532,972½ employees, their glorious history has been built upon two fundamentals: pioneering products that make lives better and leading the world in weapons technology. Watch one of their commercials to learn about how they're making your life better. Usually."

People like that don't want quality employees, they want drones. If you want people that sit down and shut up you'll get them, that works for blue collar stuff (sometimes) but if you're doing anything more than shuffling papers you have to let people be a little free and actually know what they're doing.

The last place I worked had this corporate policy
1. Make your best guess.
2. Don't guess wrong.
3. Management will always second guess your decision.

This is in addition to paid overtime is never authorized. If you have to stay past your shift to complete the assignment, that's your loss. And if you leave without finishing everything, you're fired. Don't think about coming in late the next day to compensate for your OT.

I'll take it under advisement.

We normally operate with the assumption it is better to beg forgiveness than it is to ask permission.

For you boss like farkers out there, this is a decent audio book Link (new window), especially considering it's free.

Of course, most farkers are at the level one. When interviewing I usually try to get a feel for what the interviewee thinks about the world, if they are a 'world sucks' or a 'I'm a victim!" person, I'll let the competition hire them.

Phila. is trying to pass a living wage deal, so does that affect panhandling? I'm looking forward to a $20 cheesesteak because we are ALL entitled to a job and with that, a home.

I can proudly say that I've never said any of that to my team (though at times I've been tempted). They're people first, employees second.

With that attitude, I will probably fail as a manager. At least in my company.

Exactly, if something goes wrong, check the systems/procedures. Then ask employee for advice on how procedures can be changed. If an employee does something incorrectly, I blame myself first and that's usually correct since I'm the one who designed everything.

That being said, there are people who suck, if they happen to get though the hiring phase fire them immediately. People who have terminal suck are just to hard too change and will destroy anything they get near, on purpose out of jealousy or pure ignorance.

BS, you can update your facebook on your own dime, besides, that's where viruses be. Arrrgh.

2011-10-15 09:52:51 AM
I had a boss who would give us logistically impossible schedules, and then shoot down any suggestions we had for trying to make his plans work (because they involved change). At one point he told me to "work smarter, not harder." I'm convinced that the look I gave him got him started on the process of firing me, but I got a better job before he could do it.

Here's a fun idea. Goggle your former horrible bosses. My guy had lots of people saying awful stuff. It's like a negative resume on the company server.

2011-10-15 10:12:42 AM
I can honestly say, any manager who promoted one of those feel good phony ass 5 points to eternal happiness charts... would quickly find himself employing only 1s and 2s. hint. you don't motivate by preaching. and people are not that simple, easy to classify.

keep it up, though, you probably have a bright future in consulting.

2011-10-15 10:17:18 AM
If someone at my work said something like "who gave you permission to do that?" or whatever I'd tell them to go get farked, and talk shiat about them the rest of the day. Because I'm my own boss. And not office-whipped like you people *rubs shame*

uber humper: That being said, there are people who suck, if they happen to get though the hiring phase fire them immediately. People who have terminal suck are just to hard too change and will destroy anything they get near, on purpose out of jealousy or pure ignorance.

So much this. Hire good people, set high expectations, and then make sure the job's getting done. If someone can do an excellent job and still spend 85% of their time on facebook, then either come up with something more interesting for them to do, or just be glad you've got someone so efficient working for you.

By contrast, when you get someone sh*tty, make sure you write them up immediately. Do it again two weeks later and if they don't quit at that point, give them the "final talk and write up" a few weeks later. Once you've got your paper trail for "corrective action" fire their ass. Shouldn't take more than a month and a half.

I had a boss I really liked because he was very good at leaving us alone. We ran the office just fine and like 95% of his time was spent in his office on this fantasy baseball or fantasy football teams. The real problem was that he was a giant douchenozzle for the 5% of the time he'd come out and bark at us, shout orders, and demonstrate how wildly out of touch he was. His other big problem was a total inability to fire people. We'd make the mistake of picking up a real toxic pill of a person every now and again and it would take like a year and a half to get the person fired b/c the boss, despite being a bully, was a really p*ssy on the honest confrontation it takes to get someone fired.

Generation_D: you don't motivate by preaching. and people are not that simple, easy to classify.

That's for damn sure. The only thing I found that worked for me was simply by working very very hard, by being very very good at my job, and then making it clear that I expected others to live up to the example I was setting. I can't stand managers/bosses who think they can hold you to a higher standard than they hold themselves.

2011-10-15 10:28:07 AM
Only problem is, good managers get to remain good managers. Bad managers get promoted to directors.

And bad directors go into politics.
