I was kind of hoping Mr. Tells-It-Like-It-Is Christie would've pushed for legalizing market hunting of deer instead.

Serve venison in school cafeterias. Save money, kids eat healthier.

They did that with 3% of the swine flu vaccine.

There are thousands of people here in Oregon that would be happy to help with the problem.

Silly idea. Unless the deer maintains an erection, it's going to fall off.

I suppose this placates the animal rights activists. However, I still see nothing wrong with hunting. People don't quite understand how overpopulated deer are. When I was a child, my grandfather (then a game warden) took me on a walk, and showed me a deer graveyard. See, deer herds are fiercely territorial, and if one herd expands beyond its resources, they literally can't move. The result is mass starvation of the herd. The image of literally 40-50 skeletal carcasses is pretty much forever burnt into my brain. All he asked me was whether I thought starvation of a whole herd was better, or the quick, relatively painless death of a few via bullet or arrow to keep the population in check. And that was 20 years ago - if those same deer are still breeding... that's a lot of deer.

This will do the same thing, but how many to we use the contraceptive on? Do we literally stop the entire species from breeding? That's terrible too.

I still lean towards hunting, and organized hunts like we have here in PA where the meat can be taken to people who need it.

I'm more concerned as to who gave deer the swine flu.

What is it with New Jersey? Weren't they the ones all upset about bear hunting?

Around here the deer herd is controlled by archery hunts. While that is fairly effective, even some times the municipalities have to hire sharpshooters. Whitetail are pretty good at avoiding predators when they know they are being hunted (they figure it out quick) and the sharpshooters charge $200 deer. Archers are free.

How in the world would you get enough deer to get the shot? I could see shooting darts of the medicine just as a hunter would, but you'd probably just get the young ones. Big bucks would certainly stay away, and 1.5 to 3.5 year does would follow the lead of the matriarch doe and hide. It would be quite a challenge to give this to the main breeding population.

I really don't understand why they don't just relax hunting regulations... extend the season, and dismiss rules about which ones you can shoot.. open season on ALL deer, regardless of sex or age.

There are not enough people who want to hunt anymore. I hunted until my late teens and not only could you not get me to go hunting, I won't eat the meat anymore. It tastes bad to me. I know why it is needed and at one time wanted to be in wildlife management as a career. But I just can't kill an animal anymore. Now if there were massive food shortages, then I would change my mind.

So, two questions:

1) With no opposible thumbs, how do they open the pill containers?

2) Same concept: open and unroll condoms?

Then why don't they figure out to stay off the farkin' roads?

Good point. We need to start hunting them with trucks, maybe they'll get the idea.

No, because now thanks to the militant vegan groups, we have been conditioned to equate hunting with cold-blooded murder.

I admit this may be a regional thing, and that I may be wrong here. I have no idea what the culture is like in the North East. Sadly the only culture I live in is the South East (Georgia) so in retrospect I may have overgeneralized. Your point is valid and vegans are way too militant, which seems like an oxymoron.

You see them on the roads at night when people stop hunting by law. I arrowed a doe tonight and venison is hanging in the tree.

Along with fewer people into hunting, there are more people into taking over the deer's old territory. The town I live in used to be surrounded by woods and fields and sounded like a popcorn popper during hunting season. Now it's surrounded by golf-course townhouses and McMansions and hardly *anyone* hunts. The deer get squeezed into smaller areas and we've taken away their predators. Then Joe Suburbanite biatches because the deer eat his azaleas.

I've been thinking about taking up hunting again myself... during the fall I've seen as many as 25 deer on the side lawn at a time.

Maybe instead of a bow I should use hand grenades.

rev. dave: I have no idea what the culture is like in the North East.

Crammed with asshats who are unable to grasp that the deer are trashing the ecosystem by gobbling up swaths of forest understory, that they're also a key Lyme disease vector, and that thousands of them starve to death every winter because of the immense overpopulation.

They think none of this happens, because the fawns are cute.

I never got into hunting myself but I realize that without natural predators it's essential to do. Which is why I called for legalized market hunting at the top of the thread. We've got lots of un/under-employed upstate NYers who are skilled hunters and could make some good living money for themselves if they could sell their venison. I'd bet it's healthier and safer meat than the typical 80/20 corporate burger patty at the local Stop N Shop.

Last time I saw venison at a local grocer's it was from Australia. WTF kind of sense does that make?
