(SFGate) Unlikely San Francisco man pulls gun on cops in the Tenderloin district. Cops respond by pumping 10 rounds into suspect. Just kidding, they tackled him instead. No, really, that's what they really did   (blog.sfgate.com) divider line 65

It's San Francisco. It's not like a dogpile full of men dressed in cop outfits is all that uncommon

A round of applause for the SFPD.

I don't understand how this could happen. It's forbidden to carry guns in California!

Good thing he wasn't at the BART station. That kind of shiat will definitely get you bullet from the transit cops.

Wonder how many times he "fell down" in his cell later.

Sadly disappointed.

A guy in Frisco with a big gun gets tackled by other guys?

Why is this even news? Sounds more like a daily occurence there.

Golf clap for the cops.

I know next to nothing about San Francisco, apparently. The Tenderloin district? Did we run out of names going from east to west, so just figured, "Eh, fark naming this place. What's for dinner Edna?... Hey!"

2011-10-15 02:08:17 AM
Jokes about men piling on other men aside, bravo to the cops for using non-lethal force instead of just shooting the guy.

This story makes me hungry.

Despite fearing that Turner would shoot them, the cops decided to tackle him. The officers worried they might shoot bystanders in a crowd gathered at Ellis and Jones streets, said Officer Albie Esparza, police spokesman.

This might be a dividend of having all your cops wear bullet proof vests. Once you realize that most GSW's from handguns are to the torso you let the vest break out the

wiki:

There are a number of stories about how the Tenderloin got its name. One says it is a reference to an older neighborhood in New York with the same name and similar characteristics. Another is a reference to the neighborhood as the "soft underbelly" (analogous to the cut of meat) of the city, with allusions to vice and corruption, especially graft. There are also some legends about the name, probably folklore, including that the neighborhood earned its name from the words of a New York City police captain, Alexander S. Williams, who was overheard saying that when he was assigned to another part of the city, he could only afford to eat chuck steak on the salary he was earning, but after he was transferred to this neighborhood he was making so much money on the side soliciting bribes that now he could eat tenderloin instead.[2][3] Another version of that story says that the officers who worked in the Tenderloin received a "hazard pay" bonus for working in such a violent area, and thus were able to afford the good cut of meat. Yet another story, also likely apocryphal, is that the name is a reference to the "loins" of prostitutes.

It's been called that for a over a hundred years, It's pretty much as always been a place for hookers & blow.

Seems reasonable, given the current state of that area.

Blow? Easy there, richy rich. More of a crack hood than a blow hood. The TL is just ridiculous, the kinda area where you'll see a homeless man shiatting in a pizza box. I work about five blocks away, in the financial district. Luckily, the pee smell dissipates by that point.

SF cops rock like that, San Jose cops will shoot you if you're pointing a gun, Oakland cops might shoot you if you're holding a gun, and BART cops will shoot you if you're unarmed and face down.

Impossible to tell from TFA whether the cops should have employed other means to neutralize the subject. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they acted correctly. In other circumstances, I might also be willing to give them latitude to use taser, phaser, or flame thrower.

Really? I've always found it difficult to find areas of SF that are entirely free of pee smell for an entire block. More of a Pee Lite and a Pee Moar kinda smell situation that constantly fluctuates according to temperature, moisture levels, wind, and other overlying smells.

Seriously it's one piss smelling city.

Wow, you're really flying off at the wrong windmill there, aren't you?

I don't think we've become acquainted on these boards. You may note that I identify as a rather left-leaning libertarian (lowercase 'l'). Though my current profession is decidedly blue-collar, it's possible that my formal education would cause people of a certain political bent to call me an "ivory-tower elitist," but of course that's just silly.

Realistically, however, I think that California has a number of excellent legislative movements on the books -- and a number of tremendously dumb ones. For instance, their most recent legislation that effectively bans both concealed-carry AND open-carry weapons? Well, I'm not a Constitutional scholar but it does seem pretty un-Constitutional. Furthermore, it's just naive to assume that just because you've officially banned something that it goes away. Case in point: Dude draws a .380 in a crowd. Great job to the cops who had the presence of mind not to open fire, but the situation highlights the axiom that when (x) is outlawed, only outlaws will have (x).

To decry me as some sort of Teabagging hyper-conservatard, well, that just kind of makes me laugh.
