I am disappointed at the paternalistic nature of the name "parent" and its implications to the relationship between the individuals in my close family.

I prefer "biological source material" or "legal guardian".

This troll of an article has it backwards. This move is an attempt to strip same-sex couples their parental identities and not the gay community trying to destroy the world like the article is trying to portray.

This seems like something that needs to be tailored to the purpose of the form. For something like a passport, a country with birth citizenship is likely to want the names of the applicant's biological parents. On something like a family tax form, however, the important thing is going to be the current legally-recognized family (taking into account divorces, adoptions, etc.).

Of course, you already have to explicitly distinguish between these two different "families" in the form's instructions anyway, since there isn't a set of words that includes one type and excludes the other. Considering that the legally-recognized family should probably be "Parent 1" and "Parent 2" (since computer systems don't tend to cope well with the word "Father" or "Mother" being "crossed out"), both sets might as well be.

A surprising number of people don't have a person to call "Father" or "Mother". . . but I suppose they're just being ornery leftists if they want to correctly identify their parents or caregivers on a form.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 are always trouble, any child knows that.
