I'd say that witnessing sex was a step in the right direction, but segways have wheels

What's the difference between a rape victim and a segway rider?

You know a rape victim has had sex at least once in their life.

Do they seriously still sell Segways?
I thought that was exposed as a joke in the first couple of months it came out, when only stupid government agencies bought them?
How does the company exist with what must be only 5 or 6 customers in the world?

Yeah, I just don't have much confidence in the beat cop on the Segway. Who the hell is he going to chase down on that thing?

We have several Segway tour groups here in San Francisco as well. And while most of the tour groups probably don't get the Arrested Development memes I shout at them as they go by, I find it funny.

Hm, I can see a lot of people not being able to ride one.
But I suppose they have to agree to it when they take the tour.
Isn't it crowded where the tourists go? So isn't it hard to ride them where a lot of people are (on the sidewalk I guess)?

I've never taken one of those tours, as they're quite expensive (presumably for insurance reasons.)

The laws in SF say you can't ride a Segway on the sidewalk. They go in bike lanes, which I'm sure pisses off the bicyclists. Then again, bicyclists love being pissed off, so there's that.

I've seen similar groups in Austin and San Diego. I'm sure other cities have them too.

I'm trying to remember where I saw meter maids using them, but that seems like a halfway decent idea.

Around here, the meter maids use little golf cart things.
It seems like being able to sit down would be more preferable than standing up, no matter what you are doing.
Plus you can carry stuff around easier.

Problem with the segway is that the designers discovered the perfect vehicle size and speed to have no place at all in the street or on a sidewalk.

You can rent them from a place down the road from me. I always see people cruising around downtown on them in the summer.

studebaker hoch: Problem with the segway is that the designers discovered the perfect vehicle size and speed to have no place at all in the street or on a sidewalk.

People not letting them on sidewalks, especially the same sidewalks that bikes often go blasting down, are just being prudes.
As for the latter, Me and my roommate had a lengthy argument about this once.

In theory, there's no reason why a segway cant reach road speeds.
Its more of a safety problem (no real suspension, no safe way to stop at higher speeds, God only knows how it would behave on a wet road in traffic). Most of which could probably be solved if Segway put their mind to it.

The real problem is that it costs thousands of dollars more than a motorcycle and isn't even a third as cool.

So? Look at the Makerbot. People gladly spend 1300$ for a lump of crap. And when they get shat on, they swear it's Belgian chocolate truffles.

A guy I work with bought two of them. He got the second one because it's no fun having toys like that without a friend to play with. He doesn't talk about his sex life all that much, but I think he gets at least some tail (from other dudes though, NTTAWWT).

His commute to work is like a mile and a half, so it really has been pretty useful for him.

I don't think you understood me. What I said to you had little bearing on what you posted in *this/* thread. Quite generally you suck. I don't like talking to you. I'd have rather you didn't reply to my comments. Like I said, you are a poopy thread, and your only goal seems to be to shiat on other people having fun or talking hopefully about future technologies. You have never brought anything to the table worth debating. You just say idiotic and pessimistic things and people respond to tell you that you suck. Your comments are never substantial or worthwhile. Hell, many of them seem to be templates that you have copypasta'd in notepad somewhere just waiting to be threadshiatted into anything tangentially related to space.

wambu: all this hate for the Segway.

Not so much, I'm thinking.

Segway was a solution in search of a problem. It could have been cool, or could still be cool, if they make it fit into a range of transportation that is both useful and affordable. But that wont happen when a scooter costs less than 2k with a range several times as long and you get something that's road legal.
Segway instead became the chariot of stylish people like mall cops, politicians, and tourists.

They need to make the system more robust for road use and/or mass produce the thing so its affordable to pedestrians.

I was holding out hope for the Puma seg-car thing they had going... but it seems to be repeating the same mistakes of being over priced and under performing.

/Which is a shame cuz I was looking forward to owning an electric hipster rickshaw.

I've seen a lot of rich swingers on segways.
