jdirtbird: Didn't the origial Haas tree die recently? Could've sworn I read that somewhere. Can't find anything now. Drinking now to ease pain of loss of brain cells due to drinking now to ease pain, etc.

FPS, avocadoes don't ripen on the tree. I don't know whether you actually need to wait until they fall off or if that's just a critical size issue. Just leave them in a paper bag for a few days. (I'm at UCSB, one of the few places that avocadoes are cheap college food)

Anybody tried one of these yet? I've got my doubts:

1) These things are shipped from South Africa to the UK. They can't be picked ripe, so like most avocados outside of Mexico, California, Texas, etc, they are probably stringly as hell and only halfway ripe for about 12 hours before they turn into brown, slimy muck.

2) Related to my last point, it's hard for me to imagine avocados this big ripening evenly, meaning that you'd probably have to pick out the nice parts and throw out the rest . . . not much savings there!

3) How big is the pit? I have a sneaking suspicion that the flesh is maybe two inches thick with a big ol' seed inside. . . not much savings there, either!

On the upside, at least they're from an old ur-hybrid tree, not a new commercial or GenEng strain.

Get your hands on some Fuerte avocados if you can . . . they've got the best flavor and texture for my money, but the're harder and harder to find.

And please, no dairy products or mayo (yes, I've seen it) in the guacamole. Thanks in advance.

Avocados are definitely sexy. Its the way the flesh is so smooth and the way it runs over the tongue when you eat it. The flavor is so subtle. Yep, 'cados are definitely sex food.

Best ones ever were in Costa Rica. Lived on those and mangoes, another sex food in my book. Was horny at every meal.
