I for one welcome our new avocado overlords ;)-

Seriously though would be nice to see them in California. We grow more avocados in this state than anywhere in the world and the darned things often cost more than a dollar per avocado. Puzzling to say the least.

would make it easy to fulfill that guacamole wrestling fantasy...

We used to have this awesome avocado tree in our backyard. I miss that thing. Free guacamole = the best guacamole, and I don't even like the stuff.

There's such a thing as avocado soup? Can't we just all agree to call this "runny guacamole"?

Staff at Tesco, the first supermarket to import the freakish fruit, have nicknamed the giant avocados "J-Los" after Jennifer Lopez's best known anatomical feature.

Avocado Soup?

2003-09-26 08:39:51 PM
Finally! I guess fark link approvers prefer articles about oversized fruit, as opposed to articles about the RIAA tracking downloads from Kazaa users and using the info to choose how to market their artists and boost record sales.
Ah well! Long live oversized fruits.

For anyone with an avocado tree: how can you tell when an avocado is ready to be picked?
Mine don't actually seem to be any good till they fall off the tree, then sit around for a few days.

I'll wager these are more similar in flavor/utility to "Florida" Avos. Large, pale, bland, low fat...meh.

Whenever I think of oversized fruit, I always think of this guy:

2003-09-26 09:04:32 PM
Actually there is a Chinese/Viet Namese grocery store near me,who's been selling these for about three or four years. /Got nothin'

Thanks to Emeril Lagasse ...

1 large ripe avocado
2 cups chicken stock
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon chopped fresh cilantro
2 teaspoons sherry
Salt and pepper

I think the issue we've all been avoiding is one of great importance: How big is the pit in this freakish fruit?

2003-09-26 09:17:57 PM
Does'nt this blow anyone elses mind?

A giant ancient avacado tree? From devil's cliff, no less?

I just find it bizzare.

Oh, and avacado's are in the same genetic family as wolfsbane.

2003-09-26 09:29:33 PM
Does everything come back to J-Lo now? Does every article have to get her name in it somehow... Cheeze-n-rice that's annoying.

2003-09-26 09:36:24 PM
So what this is saying, is that there are 6.02 x 10^23 avacados in a mole sauce?

Did you know that the avocado that most of us eat, the Haas avocado, has only been in existence for the last 50 or so years. Literally, some guy named Haas had a unique avocado tree in his backyard in a Los Angeles suburb. Nobody knows how or why it got there, or where it came from. But, the avocados were so much better than all of the other avocados grown that he patented the seed and named it after himself. The rest....is history.

Ah, the mighty avocado. It's what the Olympians once ate, and dubbed it "ambrosia".

I'm with the other farkers who made sexual innuendo-like comments. The colours, the taste, the way it marries with lime juice, garlic and coriander...

/lighting up

2003-09-26 10:01:09 PM
now...let's make a margarita to go with that...take 10 gallons of Cuervo Gold...58 limes...2 pounds of salt...2 gallons of Triple Sec..........

2003-09-26 11:18:57 PM

This is thrilling news! I've been on this avocado kick for the past few months, and the suckers aren't cheap. I've been using them in salad, putting them on sandwiches, I even made avocado tempura!

No,no,no, you didn't do it right:
