yeah but i can't help but feel like jay cutler deserves it somehow.

2011-10-14 04:22:40 PM
Honestly, the Lions knocked Cutler around like a rag doll but he still put up impressive numbers. I'd be more concerned about the secondary giving up plays than whether or not they can reach the QB.

The Bears are screwed. Peppers is out and apparently Lovie has decided to bench his usual safeties and replace them with some rookies.

The bears are going to be bad for a long long time. No depth at all and no one smart enough to improve the team through the draft.

McNabb can't throw so they are going with the pair best suited to stop the run.

I know what they should do!

Put Hester at quarterback! Because, obviously, putting him at receiver really helped the Bears over the past couple years.

That just avoids whatever unnecessary roughness penalty Merriweather would commit, and Harris's primary contribution last week was "watch Calvin Johnson run right by him for a 75 yard touchdown." None of their safeties are any good, may as well throw the others in to see what happens.

They need Carimi back in the worst way. Omiyale is so, so terrible.

GQueue: Omiyale is so, so terrible

Based on how bad he was I'm nicknaming him The Manitowoc Candidate because he had to be a plant by Green Bay to rack up that many penalty yards. The Lions front 7 would make me crap my pants too but at some point you are (allegedly) a professional.

The steelers o-line can't really be classified as a turnstile. Turnstiles usually limit it to one person getting through at a time

Entirely possible. The pass defense can be shaky, and the O-line isn't that good. OTH, the 49ers front seven are looking fairly evil, and Smith's gotten better at finding receivers. Detroit's secondary isn't there yet, either, and the 49ers got to 4-1 despite Smith getting pretty regularly belted in the chops. There appears to be a running game, which there wasn't for the first 3 games this season. It might turn out to be a competitive game. I'm not putting money on the outcome right now. Seems too easy to lose my ass.

They did look a lot better this past week, though. I don't know if that's because Starks is back or what, but I'll take it.

Lions still haven't mastered the ability to stop the run, so expect the 49ers to try to pound it a lot.

I watched maybe half of that game. I was stunned he only got sacked 3 times. It should have been 10+. And it wasn't like he was just throwing the ball away to avoid the sacks, he was actually making a large number of completions, albiet for short yardage, but when 2 Lions have already gotten a hand on him during the play, any gain is freaking impressive.

If someone had told me before the start of the season that 49ers/Lions would be THE game to watch in week 6, I'd have offered them some cash to get a hold of some of their stash.

It was the presence of a running game and Ben taking shortened drops to te backfield, and not going against the likes of Mario Williams, ray Lewis, those two guys on the colts whose name escapes me at the moment.

And hopefully Osama spin droptheball was taking notes about how to hit the hole with speed and force, and if not, then hopefully Tomlin has a short leash

Not really. He was sacked 3 times for 12 yrds. Not nearly as much as I was hoping for. With the Defense Detriot has I was wondering if Cutler would leave the field under his own power.

The Lions have played some of the best rush ends in the league so far and done just fine, with the exception of teh Vikings game.

DeMarcus Ware, Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, Tamba Hali... can't really get much better than that at DE thru the 1st 5 games. I don't see how the 9ers are going to expose a unit that has already been up against some of the best rushers in the league

===================================================

Starks helped immensely, but it was more or less the others not totally sucking for once.

Though, Minus that 76 yard run, our running game still sucked ass.
And they probably clamped down with Big Ben really hurting. Not to mention, 2 padded practices and a lot of yelling from the coaches helped.

If it continues, then I'll be happy. But I'm not holding my breath.

Getting hit without a football in your hand hurts just as much as getting hit with a football in your hand. And he got hit a lot as he was throwing.

The Lions O line is fine, it's their back 7 on defense that is bad. If a team can slow down their front 4, they will torch the LBs and DBs.

We're not turnstiles! We're not turnstiles!

I've been saying for 6 years that Alex Smith might not suck if he ever got to step into his passes, rather than avoid 3 or more defensive linemen. Turns out maybe it's true.

/Maybe. This IS Alex Smith.

Reality check! the bears gave up THREE sacks to the best dline in football last week. THREE, not 18, THREE.

I know thats not great, but given the competition, and the fact that cutler IS too slow and stupid to get rid of the ball.... The Oline didnt do that badly.

okay, they DID do badly, but they didnt PROTECT badly.

/143 false starts is a different story.

The only reason they didn't get 18 sacks is because Cutler was a madman at either scrambling away or just throwing it within about 1.2 seconds. I recall one play, he was LITERALLY on his back in mid-air and threw a pass to avoid the sack.

At least a turnstile will give you an accurate count of how many got through.
Chicago, not so much.
"I think 6, yeah definately 6 got through"
"How the hell is that possible when they rushed only 3?"
"Well, 3 of our guys got confused and went with the crowd. I think."

If you took that one game, and compared it to any single game played by any other QB ever, I wouldn't be surprised if you concluded that Cutler is the best QB under pressure of all time.

To explain just how bad the Bears O-Line is, from the Fark thread, around midway 4th, this stat:

23 of the 33 times Cutler has dropped back to pass at that point, something(Hit, defender in his face who had to stop because roughing, sack, etc) happened to disrupt him.

2011-10-15 09:32:51 AM
Not a Bears fan but it's nice to see Cutler get some respect, especially considering the amount of bullshiat that rained down upon him over the NFC Championship game. Given how much pressure he faced in last week's game, what he did was semi-miraculous.

I support this notion. Just remove the Bears' player at center, put in the long snapper Manley instead and have Hester catch a long snap like a punt. Since Mr. Ridiculous is the QB in this system, have an extra FB or TE in to block for him.
/can't be any worse... can it?

I still have to make a pick for this game. Have already picked every other matchup but this one is irritating me. Both of these teams are having impressive starts but I'm wondering which is going to collapse first, if they do at all. I suppose the smart money is on Stafford and Megatron.
