You know that weird sense of dismay you get if you ever accidentally pull back and look at news and entertainment media from a sociological point of view rather than just immersing yourself in the moment?

Like when you watch that awesome-ass Captain America movie and then you realize he never fights any Nazis at all, just HYDRA, because if he actually battled Nazis he'd somehow diminish the contribution of "our troops" (never mind that no one at the time had a problem with the idea of cap punching out nazis)...

I guess dismay is the wrong word... it's just stunning. Sometimes dismaying, sometimes just amazing, baffling, or confusing.

Also... the bit in the headline would make more sense if we remembered (knew?) that the Russian word for bear is medved.

This man scares me. Russia has seen this type of personality cult grow around its leader before. It didn't work out well.

I hope that he isn't the sociopath Stalin was.

Probably scarier then Stalin, since he's very well educated, and a former KGB man.

Agree that he's scarier. The education plus ex-KGB (current FSB?) is reason enough to worry. He may not be responsible for as many deaths as Stalin (yet), but he certainly knows where a bunch of bodies are buried.

He's way worse, because half of America has a hardon for his manliness and rugged brutality. He could easily launch a video-game style assault on Washington, and there'd be people who would think only how AWESOME it was to finally have a leader who wasn't afraid to use the big guns for a change.

Scarier than Stalin? Seriously? Has caused the starvation of tens of millions? Enabled a Hitler to start a world war? Enslaved all of Eastern Europe? Provoked a pogrom against Russian Jewry?

Are we lowering the bar for evil these days? Why am I asking you?

I find the fact he's a non-smiling deathly serious kind of person quite heartening. I've had enough of grinning "please like me" public figures.

It was implied that Putin is better equipped to deal out evil than Stalin.

And besides, Putin is just getting started

/also don't be so liberal with the "add immediately" option, reviewing and editing is helpful

Personally, I don't think Russian politics was ever about Feudalism, Communism, Capitalism, or Democracy. It's just about who can strong arm their way to top the hardest. Putin is the latest in in a line the goes all the way back to Ivan The Terrible. In Russia the explanations and ideological rhetoric might change but the thugs running the country don't.

Putin and Medvedev decide to go out to eat one day, and sit down in a restaurant. When the waiter comes up and asks what Putin would like, Putin says, "I'll have the steak." "Alright, sir. What about the vegetable?", the waiter says. Putin stares at the waiter for a minute and replies, "He'll take the steak too."

Putin could put the US in order within a year, no problem. I tell people this and they say "He has journalists executed." I reply, "Just the good ones. The media here needn't worry."

The Superputin comic (new window) is available in an English translation on their website. It's just as bizarre as the Cracked description of it.
