I could have used some alcohol to get through those boring, overly prosaic crap books.

As for the movies, neither the homosexuality nor the alcoholism was particularly raging.

Ask any fanfic author. They'll tell you.

Though they tend to see it less as subtext and more as text.

When I was in Oxford for a day, I sadly missed the oppotunity to grab a pint at the Eagle and Child pub where the Inklings used to meet.

I bet there's more drinking in Game of Thrones (mulled wine, yuck), but don't forget all the food. Granted, he didn't include recipes, but did we really need to know every detail of every course of a royal feast? It's basically all mutton, fig tarts and rape.

Treygreen13: Your blog sucks.

To be fair to the poor guy, some ass just linked his blog about drinking lots of beer to the geek tab of a major aggregator, and I doubt that's really his intended audience.

So they're Dykes then?

It's all so confusing! Gandalf the Gay or Obi the Wad? And where does PedoBear fit in at Hogwarts?

The Hobbits are gays. Legolas and Elrond are also gays. Even Gandalf is gay. Google it if you don't believe me. That whole LOTR story was a big soap opera on gays.

Beer? That's just part of being gay.

Saw each movie once just so I would know the character's names and what not if it ever came up in conversation. Would never see them again. Would rather watch paint dry. They could have cut out so much of the people just staring at each other, especially in the second movie.

They're not gay, they're British.

No kidding. I wonder if anyone's ever counted how many times that amazing Shire pipe-weed is mentioned through the series. Even Saurumon had a few kegs in his stash.

Subby seems to be part of that group that believes that anyone who enjoys adult beverages is an alcoholic. Probably fears food as well. Reagan was right about puritans.

I never understood the raging homosexual subtext bit. Tolkien was a combat veteran, he was in the trenches in some of the worst war humanity came up with. It isn't gay to love another man as your brother when you're both getting your asses handed to you by the forces of evil. Frodo and Sam loved each other, very much, as any two soldiers who went to Hell and returned would, which is not the 'love' the fanfic would have you think it is. As for beer, and food, and the leaf, those are very much central to the story. Tolkien loved tobacco, and as a proper Englishman and a soldier, he very much relished the simple comforts of home and hearth.

I think a lot of what Tolkien wrote, really gets lost because the people reading it now do not have the same background or experiences, and because the story is so timeless, people forget how long ago it was written.

yeah, i liked the books as a kid...but tolkien spent an inordinate amount of time describing things, and a lot of his songs and poems were horrid.

i watched the movies...some if it was neat, a lot of it i wasnt a fan of, and the running time is ridiculous for those 3 things.

i like the hobbit a lot better, im hoping the movie will be ok, but its already being split in two, and i expect them to total 85 hours and have 17 endings.

Read your blog. It's really only interesting if you actually think the beer consumption was over-the-top. You probably come from one of those places where a couple of beers a day is considered 'alcoholism'. There are many places in the world where this is normal. Going to the pub with your friends and having a pint is just what you do to hang out. You make it sound like something alien, something that needs to be explained by looking at Tolkien's biography.

You do realize it was a blog devoted entirely to beer, right? Somehow I don't think this person thinks beer consumption is some kind of bad, alien thing ... you know, what with the entire blog being about consuming beer and all.

scotto: farkin idiot, doesn't he know that Thorin was the leader of the dwarves, not Balin?

Thorin was the leader of the dwarves who went to Lonely Mountain. Balin led the expedition to Moria. Blogger is correct.

It's less to do with homosexuality and more to do with master/servant relationship.
