/Seriously.. how do they know they are colorblind? Did some scientist ask one and the little bastard say "Yep.. sure am! That green over there looks blue to me... and you're a nerd."

when you see color, you have very distinctive cells on your retina, or so I've heard. The lack of those cells would indicate colorblindness.

/my unsubstantiated theory is that they have color photoreceptors on their skin.

Which is something I don't understand. I see survival shows that say that certain species are brightly colored as a warning that they are poisonous or otherwise not a worthwhile food source. But since almost everything is colorblind except humans, then what's the point?

"Hey, I'm pink and blue. Don't eat me, I'm poisonous!"

"Well, too bad for both me and you, I can't see color!" NOM, NOM, NOM *gack!*

color blind doesn't actually mean they are relegated to a world of black and white. It means they can't see all the colors that we do. I think red and green are in most mammals' color range. Also, some insects can see ultraviolet shades that we can't. Honeybees for instance. Color-shifted photos of flowers show that they have patterns in ultraviolet that we can't see, purely for the bees.

Cuttlefish are really smart.
They also have a tender heart.
Sensitive and somewhat shy
For a Cthulu-fan, the perfect guy.
Loving you is their only wish.
That's why they're called "cuddle fish."

What's even more interesting (this is Fark so I don't know why I bother half the time), is that the cuttlefish positions his tentacles relative to the observer (or so it appears). The floor of the tank is a different angle stripe. The cuttlefish CHOSE the pattern to emulate from between the two...

Take this post, which is posted on a website with the interesting but unusual name of fark.com. You wouldn't ordinarily believe it, but once you start reading, you'll soon discover that the genius administrators of this little website have invented a way that makes you read this post in your head entirely in my voice. How they get you to do this, I have no idea. But they can. Just read a little bit. Then a little more. And by the end of the day, everything you read on fark will be voiced by Robert Krulwich.

Most of the things that use that technique have predators that can see colour. Diurnal birds and primates for example have colour vision, and tend to eat small animals like insects and frogs. Hence, you get poisonous insects and frogs that are brightly coloured as a warning in places with predatory birds and primates. Wolves and big cats tend not to eat insects and frogs, and note that their prey animals tend not to use being poisonous and brightly coloured as defensive techniques. On the other hand, they tend to have really good senses of smell, so you do get some drab, bad-smelling poisonous animals, like toads, because that will prevent, say, a fox or a housecat from wanting to eat one.
