If I were looking to buy a site like that, I'd be worried that the content providers would terminate their contracts immediately and all I'd be left with is the domain name.

Bet I'm not the only one who wouldn't buy Hulu for that reason.

Why do Hulu and Netflix still exist? Are there really still that many people who don't understand torrents?

2011-10-14 02:19:03 AM
I had Hulu and Netflix a month ago. Now I just have Hulu.
I will not pay for cable or satellite.

Netflix ripped its own guts out in ritual suicide, so Hulu was all that was left.

2011-10-14 02:28:15 AM
Fine. The yank cable companies don't want you. Come to Europe, we'd love something like Hulu that didn't suck balls and expire content after 7 days.

dookdookdook: Why do Hulu and Netflix still exist? Are there really still that many people who don't understand torrents?

I don't know about you, but I actually want the shows I watch to continue existing, and that means someone has to pay for them.

Netflix and Hulu were supposed to be the long-awaited answer to the dying business model that is network TV and the movie distribution industry.

Of course now Netflix is self-destructing and Hulu keeps sucking harder and harder every day because the networks impose ridiculous limitations on what can be shown and when it becomes available. Even the shows I want to watch that Hulu does carry, they keep a restricted number of episodes and they're weeks or months behind the air dates, so I end up pirating because they won't let me make them money!

My 3TB disk array (need to expand it again in another month) has no idea what you are talking about. I did, however, mean something that could give my jury rigged system a run for its money on all my devices via 3G without having to preload content I may or may not want to watch at any given time.

And not have me up in court for frankly silly sums of money.

Yup, 45mins of Hulu+ here. That's all I needed. The listing of clips as actual content for premium subscribers is such massive BS it's not even funny. "Oh, look, I think I might want to watch that show...WTF?! It's just clips?!" Yeah, no.

This but for the UK. All this region locking bullshiat really shows that the dinosaurs don't get it. It's the Internet, it's a global network... GLOBAL. It doesn't care where you are it'll deliver data to you. In fact you have to go our of your way to stop it from doing that as its a fundamental design of the system.

Hulu...man, whatever.

Horrible interface? Check
Horrible support for working on anything but a PC, to the point where Roku devices routinely hard lock-reboot at predictable times when playing a show? Check
Horrible, repetitive commercials even when you pay them? Check
Bizarre choice to only include some content on the PC and not other devices? Check
Artificial time limits for watching some content? Check

Fark Hulu. Netflix maybe has like 1/3rd the choice/selection when it comes to TV shows but Hulu is so farking bad, it's no contest. Hulu could have been great, and probably once was, but then the networks had to get involved and try to shape it into something that would make you watch regular TV, instead of just giving me the shows I want, when I want, and how I want.

Almost verbatim what I had intended to say. I've never quite understood network execs and music execs.

Rather than saying "OK, this is a newer means of getting entertainment, how do we work with this?" they said "Lets use our legacy methods of generating revenue with the new method of entertainment."

Hulu is painful. Apple's iTunes for movies, while the quality of the movies is good, remains stupidly expensive. Amazon has far too few movies and their "prime" option is still comical, I prefer it for music over iTunes now. Saves me the hassle of getting around that stupid DRM.

Netflix, while decidedly imperfect, is still the best choice (IMO)

The networks were looking to unload it to recoup some largely-imaginary losses with the intent to kill off the content deals the second it sold. Prospective buyers knew this and were demanding longterm content agreements in the purchasing agreement. The networks went OMGWUT and decided they'd shelve the project before actually providing something of value in their offering.

And nothing of value was lost that day.

Right now, I don't really care. the way they've completely mismanaged their subscription model for Hulu Plus has turned me off from them forever.

I used to love them and tout them as the alternative to piracy, but now they're just assholes. I still pirate the shows that are available for free, just out of spite towards Hulu's management.

I really wanted to use legitimate services. I shook my finger at people who used Napster back in the day, but that's not such a big deal now that iTunes made it easy to get music for a reasonable price.
When TV piracy was on the rise, I pirated plenty of stuff myself since I didn't want to pay absurd cable TV prices, but felt bad about it. So when Hulu first started, I felt really good about it, like it was iTunes of TV shows. Then they farked the whole thing up so I don't care about them anymore. Netflix is still doing a good job though. Just wish they'd get more fresh new content.

^. If you ask me, the primary problem with the US economy lies in the fanciful mythology of business and economics taught in Business schools. Failing to meet your projected profits is NOT a loss; it's evidence that you fail at market analysis.

The serve different purposes. Stuff on Hulu today won't be on Netflix until the end of the season and the season is bundled and shipped.

i have little trouble with Hulu or Netflix.

I've got Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu+ on my Roku box. My wife pays for the Hulu+, because lord knows I wouldn't pay a dime for that piece of shiat. It has a poor interface that is slow and the commercials keep getting longer and longer. They used to be around 15-20 seconds when Hulu started. The last time I was watching something there were a total of six 60-second commercials on a half-hour program. It's not nearly as bad as cable, but I see it getting there very soon.

I understand why some people torrent, but it's not for me. Sometimes I just want to plop down on the couch and then decide what to watch. I just don't have the desire to plan out what I might want to watch in the future, torrent it and then store it.

I would like to purchase digital media
* That I can store locally and not have to worry about skipping and buffering.
* That I can easily transfer to any device of my choosing.
* That I can play on said device without proprietary software.

As things currently stand, the only way I would be able to get what I want is through piracy.

Same here, and I don't have cable. The current shows that I like to watch are all on Hulu, so why should I pay a cable company a hundred bucks a month to see them a day earlier? Hell, I never even use Redbox anymore because of Amazon.

What I hate is how every network has its own god damn streaming site these days. So I have to make the rounds to catch the Simpsons, Hawaii 5-0, and Sons of Anarchy. I really don't want my content Balkanized with fifty different logins/plugins to manage.

Hell I completely gave up on SoA because while it was good, FX was being a royal pain about putting them up for streaming. So I just stopped checking and caring about the show. Some had two week breaks between episodes and other weird shiat. CBS gets point for having Hawaii 5-0 up within 24 hours.

Networks need to understand that a whole lot of their content is not time dependent. If I don't see some show on Friday, it's not like a die. Just toss them up at a normal interval, I'll watch it and not biatch about the ads. You roll dice to determine some weird release schedule, I'll find something else to watch.

As far as I know, I can't torrent last night's Daily Show or Colbert report or Tosh.0.

And personally, even if I can, I don't feel like trolloping through the land of pron and trojans and virus and waiting for 10 minutes to download it, hoping that this is not the day I get a nasty letter from my ISP notifying me they've cancelled my account for violating my service agreement for illegal conduct.

Personally I don't mind downloading something now and then, but I prefer to pay for it. I like watching the shows I stream and if I view them in a fashion that generates revenue for the content provider they will see that and continue to make the show.

I also like the convenience of netflix compared to torrenting. The recent price hike bothered me a little. I son't mind paying more, but I expect to get more for it. The timing of the price hikes and the announcement of the starz contract falling through left a bad taste in my mouth, I am now paying more for less. I am going to keep subscribing though because they still have things I want to watch, and I am hoping that they use this new capital to negotiate content in the future.

Well, Daily Show and Colbert are available on their webpages. Just Flash, no login needed. Or you can torrent them from a reputable source in 10 minutes after signing up with an ISP who's terms of service are "Don't screw with our network or other customers, and we won't block any ports without paperwork from the police."

I'm a die hard pirate but I still have a netflix account. I pay for the convenience. The idea of paying for content is outdated. Anyone who tries to base a business around content production is a fool. The money is in the delivery mechanism now.

fracto73: Personally I don't mind downloading something now and then, but I prefer to pay for it.

I'd prefer it if the for-pay model I'm already using weren't run by a bunch of conservative (in the business sense, i.e. resistant to any change) out-of-touch goons.

Instead of upping my subscription fee and handing me all the content I could possibly want on demand, I'm paying $100/month for a connection to the internet, which gets me anything I want for free.

They're foregoing ludicrous profits off the internet model because then they couldn't artificially limit/restrict the legitimate supply. I'd love it if I spent $150/month and had full 1080p access to everything on demand. Hell $200 might not be bad if they included all the sports packages.

Which is another pet peeve of mine - NFL blackouts. With millions of people living in the DC area, does it make sense to black out the games if they don't sell out? (The skins always do, but they can't possibly expect every football fan in the area to buy a ticket.) They also black out Ravens games when the Foreskins play. If my Ravens are scheduled for the 1pm game on CBS and the Burgundy Bunglers are scheduled for Fox, I get infomercials.

The delivery model is being promulgated by people who grew up when radio was a legitimate contender for your attention, there were only 3 networks, and a sign-off every night at 3am. Think about that.
