I actually have some of the same camping stuff he has so I can completely understand the gear porn mentality. It's not like it's intentional or anything, it's just the same thing as how you can walk into a Best Buy or Home Depot and get stuck in there for hours.

Now, I can understand taking a weapon for protection from bears, mountain lions, gay hillbillies, but this is NOT the correct choice...

RatMaster999: Anybody else notice he felt he needed to pack along his FN Five-seveN?

He mentioned a few times whether he thought it would be enough for a bear. I've always wondered what would be the most minimalist bear-gun. I figure just having a gun in my hand in a meeting with a bear will add enough confidence to make me feel secure and not act like potential prey.

I've never even heard of the gun or its bullet before this. Anyone have any info on it? I see that it was made as an alternative to the 9mm but it looks like it would pack more punch.

Well, he said he is using armor piercing bullets with it so I imagine that puts it many steps ahead of a stand 9mm, but I would still want a large distance between me and the bear before I started firing and an avenue of escape, cause I doubt the bear will go down quickly unless you get a very lucky shot.

A lucky shot for me would be hitting the bear, cause I don't think I would be at my most calm with a pissed off bear charging at me.

The thing that blows my mind is that the flies over the lake. Those powered parachutes are great in that it's hard to crash one -- if the engine dies, you just gently coast back home. But if the engine dies over a 15 mile wide LAKE, I hope you have the stamina of Michael Phelps.

Also, it's funny that the storm caught him by surprise. You could see plenty of cumulonimbus on the horizon in the direction he was flying. Something tells me his weather-fu is weak. Real mountaineers don't need a 10 day forecast to tell them that the giant puffy white clouds to the west might cause them some trouble in the near future. :)

I rather doubt he really had AP rounds, and was just going with the 5.7mm reputation for easily penetrating vests. On the other hand, if he's ready to drop $2000 on a tent, maybe he does. Either way, I think I'd rather have a 9mm, only a few less shots, and much heavier bullets. Still not a good choice for bears, though. Screw the weight, take a .44 magnum.

absent of the camping, it looks fun as hell to fly around like that.

wouldn't want to just have a camera to talk to, though. would be more fun with another parasailer and the two of us suspending a cooler of beer for the afternoon.

Yeah that's the feeling a pussy gets when confronted with somebody who TAKES OFF with a parachute.

This guy might be a damn good paramotor pilot (hooking his gear bag TWICE), but if he's going to camp under a tree during a thunderstorm and take on a bear with that tiny handgun, he's as dumb as they get in terms of woodsmanship.

No THIS will kill a bear. Go big or go home (in a body bag). If it's standard equipment for being outdoors in Alaska then it's good enough for the junior birdman. If it's you vs. a bear you want something simple like a revolver.

I don't think it's the "gear porn mentality." I, for one, can completely understand paying big money for awesome equipment. I think it's more about the guy being a douchebag...like when he's talking about his tent and his air mattress:

"I got the five hundred dollar tent; maybe I should have splurged for the two thousand dollar tent."

"That's (the air mattress) literally as comfortable as my three thousand dollar mattress at home."

Is the cost of this equipment important? Yes. Does this guy talking about the cost come off as a total dickbag? Yes.

GavinTheAlmighty: So this may be a stupid question, but can he not take off with his bag already in tow? Why does he need to take off and then pick it up on the run?

Not stupid, I had the same thought. Strap it to the frame by his butt. You see him tie it to the frame with a rope later. maybe just wanted to show off his piloting skills but if its light enough he can fly with it, should be light enough to take off with. Otherwise you risk dropping all that gear down a mountain side where you can't get it and maybe one shoe too.

The only thing that would make this better is if it were a SILENT electric motor...that damn roar from the engine kind of negates the whole flying like a bird aspect of the thing.

Oh ya totally. Why in fact I was planning on purchasing one of these but now that I've seen this video and heard the engine noise there is no way I'm going to buy it. I mean seriously, who would want to fly to the top of a mountain with all that noise. Completely ruins the experience. Too bad because it looked kind of fun.

The electric motor is silent. It's the giant fan that's making all the noise. Maybe Dyson can come up with a more silent fan, but until then, that's what ya get.

It is. This guy is crazy. Literally mentally unstable. His ads were wild. His company went under. He's been busted two or three times brandishing his gun. He's been caught on tape saying creepily vicious things about gays then denying that happened. He's been busted for driving recklessly through neighborhoods. He'll protest the media for unfair coverage on him. He's been in trouble for using this parachute device to almost hit tour boats on the Great Salt Lake. That's just the few things I can remember.

That said, I do want one of those parachute thingies.

I figured that he wanted to keep it well clear of the mtoor and parachute lines (hence why it's not on his butt) and clear of his legs for when he needs to run on takeoff / landing.
