(The Consumerist) Stupid November 5th is Bank Transfer Day, where everyone will take their money out of big banks and put them in credit unions and small local banks. Sure, this will mean they'll become the new big banks, but WE'LL SHOW THEM   (consumerist.com) divider line 271

Also, remember that November 2 is the Great Gas Out. Don't buy gas that day as a way of showing the oil companies that you don't agree with their practices. After a day of no income they'll start to rethink how high they're keeping their prices. UNITED WE STAND. BRING DOWN BIG OIL.

November 5th suddenly becomes "Employee Appreciation Day" for Banks. Oh, and the website's acting up, weird coincidence is all.

Well that lacks gunpowder, treason and plot. I don't we'll remember it.

2011-10-13 12:03:24 PM
Actually, if people moved their money from the top 5 banks to the smallest 50 banks, then the new big banks would be smaller banks. Math.

Learn what a credit union is before calling it a "bank".

Everyday is Bank Transfer Day for me. Haven't had an account with a bank since my first paycheck.

Someone else can give their money to shareholders. Not me.

They have a right to earn a profit; I have a right to keep my money.

2011-10-13 12:04:22 PM
I just hope people remember to open the credit union account FIRST.
/Insert someone else's CSB about leaving a bank and suddenly being on chexsystems.

I think the beef with big banks is more about how they are run, rather than their size.

2011-10-13 12:05:28 PM
My money is coming out of my bank before then. As soon as I see the last monthly automatic payment come out of my new credit union account.

2011-10-13 12:05:56 PM
All of my money is already in credit unions... all the Big Banks have are my Big Debts (mortgage, credit card).

Maybe I'll refinance the mortgage between now & then. Take that!

(credit card is 0% interest, will be paid off before that expires...)

Wait, what?

Can someone explain to me how people can withdraw/transfer billions of dollars in a single day? I thought that after so much is withdrawn, the Federal Government halts monitary exchanges to prevent a rush on the banks.

2011-10-13 12:06:15 PM
Don't know about you guys, but I get to vote on the direction of my credit union. Does your bank allow that, simply for having an account? I'm ok with CU's taking over for big banks.

The oil companies will make it back over the next week or so. Unless people actually drive less it is no skin of their balls

Dear retard submitter: Credit Unions are NOT FOR PROFIT and is owned by it's MEMBERS!!!

You are an idiot. They can't become like banks.

2011-10-13 12:08:25 PM
this actually isn't a bad idea if you could get enough people to do it. It could damp financial the influence of the larger superbanks of an extent. Credit unions generally have lower fees, free checking, and all that stuff banks are now chargin for. And you're technically part-owner by being a member.

Rules can be changed. Just look at JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs. They went from being banks to not being banks just recently.

In good old fashioned "It's a Wonderful Life" parlance, this is also known as a Run On A Bank. Doing it all on one day = lunacy.

That said, the headline is stupid. If people start moving money out of the megabanks and into local Credit Unions, that won't make the Credit Unions into big banks, it will just make them well-funded credit unions.

Tempting....

First I gotta call my mortgage broker. If she can get me more than 1% drop on my mortgage interest, then there's no reason to stay with the bank we have, and bingo-bongo credit union here we come!

2011-10-13 12:09:59 PM
This will certainly be a great success and will really stick it to the man.

In no way will this fizzle and amount to nothing.

Nope.

2011-10-13 12:10:18 PM
Why wait for a specific day? I changed over to a credit union almost two years ago and haven't looked back. Fark the banksters.

stewbert: Don't know about you guys, but I get to vote on the direction of my credit union. Does your bank allow that, simply for having an account? I'm ok with CU's taking over for big banks.

CU - the "owners" are the people who's money is in the CU - Profits go to the people with accounts.
BANK - the owners are people who DON'T have the money in the bank. - Profits go to the shareholders who most likely don't have accounts.

Subby is bit retarded on how this all works.

YES! Because the mom and pop store down the block will feel so much better when no one buys things at their store!
That will show big companies.

BTW, I guess tomorrow will be a good day to hang out at ATM's?

Bank I worked at in the early 90's would give out really nice t-shirts every summer to customers, baskets of mums in the fall, a gift every holiday season. Banks don't really do that crap anymore :(
My current bank just got rid of debit card reward points AND thier Sunday hours have gone bye bye. 2 of the reasons I opened w/them in the 1st place.

The people that participate in this are the same ones that are down on the street protesting because they don't have any money. So I'm sure the banks are just deeply scared.

You can join member owned financial institutes as well. Vanguard and USAA (if eligible) comes to mind.

You right rules CAN be changed. Money can be worthless tomorrow. So you will send me all your money tomorrow right?

So then you think the people who own the Credit Union - the people who have accounts there are going to push for other people to take over their money?

I don't think you understand what a co-op actually is,.

Glad he left chase a year ago. Love my credit union. Even get a dividend on my accounts each month. With chase it was fees!

if the 99% do that, they will reduce the banks' holdings by 0.002%.

Yep. Have that one. Have Merrill Lynch - scuse me Bank of America. Have Chase.

So far oddly enough Chase has been good to us (or not horrible), but I still want my money out of the system, so to speak.

Mind you, consumer accounts really don't matter much to most large banks anyway.

One of the best things about credit unions is no ATM fees if you have to use another credit union ATM. (new window)

You think non-profit actually means something.

Cute.

/my employer is a non-profit worth $2.2 billion

Sadly, that would screw with my direct deposit. I kinda like having money, so no.

2011-10-13 12:18:26 PM
Not only will that not appreciably reduce the amount of money in banks, it will dramatically reduce their call center costs, since rich people don't call that number. Their profits will skyrocket.
