Much of the political backlash against raves began in 2002, when then-Senator Joe Biden proposed the Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy, or RAVE Act, which he attached to popular bill targeting child abduction.

What we could really use is legislation to prevent attaching unrelated legislation to legislation.

Jesus tap dancing Christ...banning pacifiers, stuffed animals and led gloves? That will not solve the drug usage problem or bring back that 15 year old girl. I am sorry she died, its sad...but prohibiting common rave attire is not the solution.

Apply this to any other group - No head banging at the next Megadeth concert, better cut that long hair too! Christians better not bring their bibles to the next Third Day concert. Tweens best leave their "I love you Justin" posters at home when mommy takes them to see Justin Bieber. The goths need to remove all that make up if they want to go see Marilyn Manson.

Attempting to regulate such small things as attire is not the solution. Creating such a law does nothing to curb the drug usage at a rave, or concert in general. As much as I despise overreaching Government regulation, if she wants to put a feel good law in place and perhaps actually do some good, then create practical legislation...like any "concert/rave" that has more than 500 paying attendees must have DanceSafe or a similar safety organization on premises. Hey here is an idea, don't let 15 year olds into raves/concerts without a parent or guardian...a 15 year old can not go see the latest SAW movies with out mommy or daddy with them, why is a concert/rave treated any different?

The more local the government decisions, the better, right?

Big Cheese Make Hair Go Boom: .like any "concert/rave" that has more than 500 paying attendees must have DanceSafe or a similar safety organization on premises.

Good idea, but then the gov't would have to define a 'rave' and they are likely to 'know it when they see it.'
I'm not in Cali so I dont know first hand, but I assume they already have existing laws on the books regarding large groups of people.
Licenses, permits, etc that they could build on without creating new un-precedent laws.

At a minimum, you have to commend Fiona Ma for actually going to a rave. A lot of legislators have no idea what they are talking about when they are attempting to create a new law: Exhibit A (new window)

It isn't part of the Constitution, it is an amendment, in other words an afterthought or just a suggestion.

I know, let's reduce LSD usage by banning tie-dye! That'll work!

How about having police with drug dogs patrolling the grounds of all public events where a permit is required? If it's on state property, they can do whatever the fark they want - if they even think you have been doing drugs, you should be getting questioned.

Just so we're clear, the movie thing is industry self-policing itsself. There's no laws in the US preventing a 15 year old from seeing SAW.

I'm pretty sure the right's ammunition isn't "OMG THEY BANNED RAVES." Unless Limbaugh was out trying to score some pre-teens or something.

I was expecting a Republican too, but Fiona Ma? A San Francisco Democrat?? WAT?

Then I looked at her Wiki page, and it turns out she's this kind of Democrat:

No; they would more likely take it as a rallying cry to ban that got-damn rapper music.

Somebody made it in to adulthood and got elected to office without knowing you cannot ban a genre of music.

If democracy is to work, we need to start voting for computers.

2011-10-13 01:46:35 PM
As a house DJ, and someone who's played various raves, this is absolutely farking ridiculous. Do they seriously believe that people wearing light up clothing and sucking on a pacifier has anything to do with stopping a rampant drug problem? God bless the stereotypical political knee-jerk reaction. At least I can add another state to the "places I wont look for a show in" list.

Ok . . . . so . . . . wow this is dumb . . . . maybe next time you will spend 5 minutes googling the subject in question before trying to ban it?

However if anyone puts forth a ban on dihydrogen monoxide just pass it. That stuff kills people all the time and is one of the most common industrial by-products in the world.

No, but expect to have this brought up from hell to breakfast every time someone points out the million ways the Republicans try to attack civil liberties. It's like the PMRC: Never mind that that was a bipartisan clusterfark, nope, the Democrats get to own that until the end of time because it was successfully made synonymous with Tipper Gore.

Stupid, unnecessary and not in keeping with any kind of progressive agenda. Why? Why would you do this?

troll.me

but in all seriousness, I was at Starscape in baltimore this summer drinking heavily since I don't do drugs.

They had free water and stuff for the concertgoers who needed it. The big problem with ecstasy is the dehydration it causes, and a little bit of prevention can go a long way in preventing deaths.
