So an $85 basic jersey would cost $64 dollars? That's still an absurd amount for what is paint on a jersey. The NFL really needs to lower the prices on those in this economy. $85 should be the price for the high quality jersey with all patches sewn on. $60-something for the middle grade with just the name and numbers sewn on, and about $30 for the low grade one.

I took my brother to his first Chiefs game last year. He wanted to get a jersey for his step-son. The conversation with the lady selling the jersey in the tent went almost verbatim to this-

brother: "How much is that Dwayne Bowe in a kid's medium?"
retailer: "$110."
brother: "I don't need it to be autographed."
retailer: "It's not."

Ha ha! Yeah, the jerseys are crazy expensive...it's fabric with patches on it. How much could it possibly cost to stitch them together in some Chinese sweatshop??

Now that Reebok no longer has a monopoly on jerseys I would expect the prices to come down...slightly.

Then again, I've gotten a few sewn jerseys from Craigslist with the logos, NFL tags and everything that appear to be the real deal, at a fraction of the retail price. (and if they're not, they're great knockoffs).

You see this in soccer with "replica" and "authentic" jerseys, and then the teams will put out cheaper "kids" jerseys.

Of course, cheap is relative - authentic jerseys cost $150 in Japan and I don't think they're that much cheaper in Europe. And that's with advertising all over it, before you even add a name and number! Ridiculous.

The MLS needs to bring down their jersey prices too. I wanted to get a Columbus Crew jersey at the adidas outlet store and it was still like 70 dollars. Thats not how you grow a brand, especially when the item has advertisements on them!

Hockey sweaters are $299 for the auhentic and thats BEFORE they sew on the numbers, that costs an extra $80.

Nothing says "winning in life" like sporting a second hand Shaun Alexander jersey

2011-10-13 11:47:03 AM
I've got a few authentic jerseys, and there's a pretty dramatic quality difference between those and replicas or even NFLShop's "premier" replica line. Just the sheer weight of an authentic jersey is easily 2-3 times that of a replica, the fabric is considerably thicker in areas, etc.

My only beef with standard replicas are the screen printed numbers and names, they tend to peel off or wear out. At least the 'premier' line I mentioned earlier has sewn on numbers, while still having a screen printed name on the back. It's a pisser to pay $90-100 for a replica jersey only to have a number start peeling off or something, I'd rather drop a tad bit more and get the real deal.

Now that you can get a long or short sleeve t-shirt with the name and number of any player (or customized) for $30-$40, I don't know why anyone would get a jersey, even the less expensive "premier" line.

Of course this is coming from a Browns fan who has jerseys in his closet for Tim Couch, Charlie Frye, Lee Suggs and The Soldier. I finally wised up and got a TJ Ward t-shirt last year, which accomplishes is the same goal of pledging allegiance to a crappy team.

I assume the NFL would lower the prices if demand for their products decreased.

I bought a bunch of great knockoffs for $40 a peice that had the name and numbers sewn on, with the sleeves having a bit of elastic in the end and the whole nine yards.

I'm assuming they were knockoff only due to the price and that I got them through a friend of a friend blah blah blah. The quality said nothing of being lower quality.

Of course I still only wear 1 jersey when it calls for it, a replica (paid too much at a game) Janikowski one. Bought it 4 years ago for the lulz, but it's worth it now.

A few years ago I made a fantasy football bet in which the loser of the head to head match up would have to wear a pink Shaun Alexander jersey the following Sunday (This was after he was cut/left the Hawks).

I lost.

It was only after the bet was made that we remembered we would be in Las Vegas the Sunday the bet was to be paid. I was surprised how often I had to explain to people that "I lost a bet dammit!" Whatever, I rocked it.

Or a better option is to not give a shiat if the player's still on the roster or not. You could, with most teams, find a retro shirt of a guy who's gone to the Hall of Fame, and go that route. I see a couple Bart Starrs walking around.

I got a Moss jersey from the local JCPenny for $5 because he had left. It's not quite the NFL one, but it'll do. It has the number, name, logo on arms, but has a small gray stripe on the arm as opposed to the full thick one and no red piping. At the mall and most places, those sell for $60.

"Trade your non-rostered player jersey at The Pro Shop by Oct 16 and receive 25% off any regular-priced Seahawks jersey in the store," the team tweeted Tuesday.

They only give you six days to do this? Does that mean it's only good for fans going to this week's game?

Probably trying to make sure they limit the number of folks picking up $5 jerseys at Goodwill and trading them in for 25% off a new one...

I waited until I found an epic deal online. Got 2 NFL licensed jerseys for $45 shipped. (It took me 5 years to find a deal I was willing to do.) Of course, I got them at the end of last season and 1 of the 2 players has already left the team. I've still got 1 good one... Although there's speculation that he won't be around next year because he's too injury prone. Meh, I still wear 'em until I can find another awesome deal like that. (Likely another 5 years)

In Buffalo, this is the case by necessity. The vast majority of jerseys people wear are of people not on the team. And I am not even counting the Jim Kelley and Bruce Smith types. It is all Bledsoe, Edwards, Lynch, Poz, etc. I guess that what happens when you have no good players for 10 years.

I was discussing this on a Seahawks forum the other day, and I think there are a very small number of Seahawks jerseys that would be safe to buy right now: E.Thomas, Chancellor, Mebane, Hawthorne, Okung and that's about it. Maybe Red Bryant, but he's going to be a free agent after this season. Rookies and recent free agent acquisitions aren't proven yet (so no Doug Baldwin, Zach Miller or Sidney Rice), and pretty much everybody else is on thin ice.

Well, Alexander wouldn't have been a real fashionable choice around the 2006-2008 era, but still, he goes down as an all-time great Hawk. There are revisionists out there who downplay his accomplishments because of his offensive line, but an ordinary back doesn't go for nearly 1,900 yards and 28 TDs, no matter who is blocking for him. Alexander just happened to go downhill after 30, as a lot of heavily used running backs do. I hope he makes it to Canton; just a little more longevity would have made him a lock. That 100-TD plateau weighs in his favor for sure.
