Look on the bright side, subby. That cockroach-infested hell-hole would cost you $1200 dollars in Manhattan.

Wait, hang on, $400 a week? Never mind. Do you live in a hostel or something? I've never heard of apartments renting by the week.

RexTalionis: I've never heard of apartments renting by the week.

I've heard of them, but they're called extended-stay hotels.

And anyway, subby, you're in Australia. Live it up! Go on a walkabout. Throw some shrimp on the barbie and pop a nice cold can of Fosters. It can't be that bad.

I lived in Sydney. It's a great city, but it has one huge drawback which prevents it from taking #1 - no subway system. Come on now! That's amateur hour.

I've noticed that cities/countries that top these polls generally do not have a very diverse population. For the national polls, Scandinavian nations usually hold the top spots. In cities, I often see results like Shanghai or Sidney.

That's the way rent is paid in Australia. Weekly. Just because you haven't heard of it, doesn't mean it isn't done.

Well, for a Chinese city its diverse. But I don't think its very diverse when compared to major Western cities.

That's just my first hand experience though. I could be completely wrong.

That's how it works in Australia. Don't know why. Kind of makes more sense than doing it monthly, since weeks are regular while months vary the number of days.

Yeah, that's the way rent is usually advertised in the UK as well. That doesn't mean they collect every week though, it's just the reference usually used by agents, etc.

But $400 is high, even for central London. Don't tell me Sydney is more expensive than London now.

That's not crazy high for Sydney, especially if you're near the CBD. I lived in a shiat part of town and my rent was $250 a week.

That's why people in Sydney aren't as fat as the folks in NY or Chicago.

Seriously though, the trains that branch out from the Sydney CBD to the suburbs are a great way to get around.

Yeah, it has a good light rail system to get in and around the suburbs, but that's not a replacement for a good inner-city subway.

Readers of a "luxury travel magazine" is the key phrase here. Places that make you want to flee if you live in them can still be nice to visit.

I was lived there in 2008. If they've built an entire subway system in 3 years I'll be very impressed.

since there seem to be some sydney residents on this thread- I'm going to be moving there from the US in June. What's the best way to go about finding a place to rent? Are there websites that advertise apartments, as in the US? I'll have a temporary place to crash while I look around, so I don't need to have anything locked down before I leave here.

That's a suburban rail system. It's not really a city metro. It's like comparing the NY Subway system to the Long Island Rail.

Don't know about Sydney as a whole but I know the Opera House is waaaaaaay overrated and DOES not look and feel like what the ads or brouchure tells you. I guess to be fair so are most tourist attractions.

Spent a few weeks in the CBD in Sydney for work a few years ago. It's the one city more than any other I've ever been to that reminded me of Manhattan. It was a very expensive place to stay, if work wasn't paying for it I never could have afforded it.

Totally disagree. The Opera House is one of those world icons which totally lives up to its reputation in person. Sydney Harbor is insanely beautiful and the Opera House looks magnificent.

Not sarcasm, more innocent laziness to look up the time.

/Oh alright then, sarcasm it is. This is what coordinating multiple interviews in four different time zones between three parties over the last few days has done to me.

Lived there for five years, absolutely loved it. I don't really understand complaints about a lack of inner city subway, as the (subterranean) trains stop most places in the city, and most everything in the CBD (Central Business District, aka "Downtown" in the US) is close together. Public transportation for the suburbs of Sydney is certainly inefficient and outdated, compared to, say, Melbourne and most of Europe, but good enough, and probably not something tourists would notice.

A modest CBD 2 bedroom rents for upwards of $700 per week at the moment, and with the dollar as strong as it is, that's up there with Manhattan and London, and the only thing keeping me from becoming overly nostalgic.

Wow. I just looked at a two bedroom, 900 square foot apartment that's going for $850 (something like 500 GBP) per month. That $850 includes all utilities. Granted it's not in London but damn.

Well, it's low if you want a whole flat. I was doing 150 pounds a week for a bedroom in a flat shared with one other person in central. It sure as hell wasn't a cockroach-infested hell-hole. And I knew of much cheaper. So yeah, 1000 pounds a month for a nice room is high.
