Nothing makes me feel older. The first PC I used had a 20Mb hard drive, but it still had a word processor with thesaurus and spell check, a spreadsheet, games etc plus room to store lots of letters and files.

When I was at university in 82 the huge computer hidden away in an air conditioned room that ran a hundred terminals across the campus had a total storage capacity of 750mb.

I'd love to go back in time and show them a 64Gb Micro SD card. And then tell them it cost $40....

From the comments:
Originally I thought this was going to be a chart comparing the exponential growth of storage size instead of physical size.

Sure thing, guy. Just compare the dimensions of each drive and flip it upside down.

ASCII porn doesn't take up very much space.

But these days I don't even run HDDs in my personal rigs anymore. They're just not necessary. Bulk storage goes onto my NAS (which is loaded with HDDs), while almost everything else fits nicely in 100gB of space. SSDs will eventually replace standard HDDs in every desktop system, at least as the primary drive(s). HDDs are well on their way into Legacy territory.

Flint Ironstag: Nothing makes me feel older

THIS. This is the single spec in the tech world that really makes me feel (a) old and (b) like tech advances at an incredible rate.

I remember installing My First TeraByte. It was a thing of beauty and magic. It required an entire server rack. It had a price tag with six, count 'em, six, figures.

The day I got an email from Tiger Direct for a USB 2TB drive for less than $100... I nearly wept for my lost youth.

Things people take for granted in a -phone- these days would be magic if done with a full workstation not that long ago... but storage advances really are mind-boggling.

Cajnik: The answer is always porn

Heh. True. The Internet, storage, processing, network bandwidth -- you name it -- wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for pr0n.

Kuroshin: SSDs will eventually replace standard HDDs in every desktop system, at least as the primary drive(s).

Agree. SSDs rule. Totally sold. An easy(ish), cheap(ish) upgrade everyone should consider. World of difference. Just the silence is nice, even setting aside the speed improvements.

Kuroshin: HDDs are well on their way into Legacy territory.

< "64kb is enough for everyone" mode = ON >

Not in this lifetime. Maybe platter-based HDDs are going obsolete at the single-user / PC level, and maybe that's what you meant, but there ain't no way platter drives are disappearing from the data center. A couple TBs of RAID5 platters is cheap... a couple TBs of SSD ain't happenin' any time soon. And when a couple TBs of SSD is cheap, we'll be storing and manipulating PBs.

(Though I'd love to be proved wrong.)

I still have my Quantum LP52 SCSI drive, the first low-profile 3.5" drive ever manufactured, in my Amiga 3000. I think I paid $250 for it. Of course, this was also around the time that 4MB of DRAM cost about $200.

You can now get 3TB hard drives for $130. 8GB SDRAM modules go for $220. Ugh.

Yeah, there are different sizes there, but it has little to do with chronology. The 1" drives came out in 1999; since then, nobody's pushed much for anything smaller, because flash has thoroughly won that niche.

I remember our Mac II prototype in 1987 was lidless because they didn't yet know how tall it would need to be -- they weren't sure whether it would be reasonable to restrict it to "half-height" 5.25" drives, or whether they needed to leave room for full-height drives. I think they finally standardized on half-height, but you could buy a drop-bracket that would accommodate full-height.

It's no different than computers in general. The first computers were the size of warehouses. Now? You can fit one in your pocket and it has far greater computing power than those warehouse-size rigs.

SFSailor: Cajnik: I stole it in one of those Drew getting drunk and posting an incoherent headline threads a while ago. This was the first time I've been able to use it.

Heh. Only fitting, then, that I'm'a stealin' it. I'll stop myself from turning this into a "WTF?" pic thread, though.

Fantastic idea (as if Fark wasn't enough of a procrastination tool / time sink). Someone should get on that.

A

Play a nice game of "steal food to survive"? Or how about the classic "eat the neighbors dog"? Of course they could be lucky enough to play a game of "join the band of roving marauders".
