In almost any major motion picture you can find 4 minutes worth of good movie. Making an interesting 100+ minute film on the other hand is a completely different kettle of fish.

Excellent.

Let's go, Voltron Force

Throw in a salvage mission, a training montage of some plucky new recruits, love affair between two of the pilots and a big battle at the end and it's on 2,000 screens next summer

Wow, pretty good. Too bad voltron kinda sucks. Mothrfarker is riding around in a carnival ride trying to be all forlorn and dramatic. Kinda reminded me of the Firefly episode when the alternator dies in the ship and Mal's freezing/ suffocating.

Voltron was awesome. It was one of the first animes introduced to the US. I guess compared to the anime of today, yes it would be kind of lame. It and G-force and others like it had pretty good story lines considering the audience in the early 80s did not have other anime shows quite like it. It would be interesting if it was picked up and made into a motion picture . I would rather see the Japanese, Koreans, or maybe India do the movie, though and make it a TV drama with at least 20 or more episodes. One they have the budget and Two they would keep it more original to the story line of the Anime. And Three, By making it a TV drama there is more time to tell the story line with 1 hour episodes rather than of trying to cram the whole series into a 95 to 120 minute movie.

I hated the cartoon of Voltron. If this was the opening to a live action movie, I would probably go see the midnight showing of it.

Voltron is one of those things that came out of Japan in the late 70's, early 80's. X number of things (lions, vehcles) form a super robot, which saves the day. There may or may not be some underlying story arc and inter-character development going on depending on how bad the dub is or if you managed to get the original Japanese version with subtitles.

Think animated power rangers with Voltron being the guy-in-suit/Megazord and you're pretty much there.

The live action movie? It should be out. The version I saw float past on TPB had English subs taken straight from the Bluray.

It's probably one of those things like Battletech's 'unseen' where Harmony Gold are cock blocking it, despite being licensed from the original Japanese production company.

/Has seen it.

I would go see this movie in a heartbeat, but there's no f*cking way Hollywood would have the balls to create a story that doesn't insult the audience.

I'm a firm believer in the notion that every single superhero / cartoon movie ever made would be 1000x better with an "unhappy" ending.

2011-10-13 08:26:58 AM
Obviously, they should've just formed the G-D Blazing Sword at the beginning of every battle.

2011-10-13 08:43:12 AM
PsyLord: Obviously, they should've just formed the G-D Blazing Sword at the beginning of every battle.

It's the problem with the formula. Evil attacks, individuals get their ass kicked, gestalt gets its ass kicked, 'super power' is used and evil is vanquished. Once you've seen one episode of Voltron/Power Rangers/X Bomber/etc you have usually seen them all.

They occasionally mix it up with the 'super power' not working until you go through a 3 - 4 episode story arc which can be summed up as 'training montage' and fall right back to the formula after that.

OTOH, they are kids shows and pretty old ones at that.

/Now has the Star Fleet/X Bomber theme going through her head.

Au contraire! Voltron hit in the fall of 1984. Star Blazers had been in US syndication since 1979, and Gigantor and Speed Racer had been around for years before that. Even Gatchaman was well known as "Battle of the Planets."

That being said, we were all duped by the awful butchering that WEP heaped on us. Everyone hates "Vehicle Voltron," and I posit that it's because the VERY dark and heavy original story was heavily edited to fit into the "Lion Force" universe.

At least WEP didn't fark up Voltron as bad as Harmony Gold raped Macross by trying to fit Southern Cross and Mospaeda into the same story....-shudder-

UNC_Samurai: Plant Rights Activist: Wasn't Power Rangers pretty much live action Voltron minus the licensing fees?

Not really.

1) Voltron kept most of the original plot intact for Go-Lion (Lion Force) and at least half of the important plot elements for Diarugger 15 (Vehicle Force).
Power Rangers, on the other hand, only used in-costume footage from the source material as a way to save on production. None of the plots were carried over and unrelated series were treated as sequels to each other. Example: Power Rangers Season 1 (Zyuuranger) had NOTHING to do with Power Rangers Season or 2 (Dairanger.) Even more amusing, they shot new footage of the White Dairanger interacting with the Zyuurangers to bridge the continuity (that's why Tommy seemed to get the shaft in the non-mech action scenes.)

2) The American acting scenes still are putrid. The Disney-controlled production era was actually bearable. I didn't mind watching Dino Thunder, S.P.D., and Mystic Force with my niece and her friends.
Even she showed me the shift back to Saban control "Power Rangers Samurai" and said "they ruined it."

Sym-Bionic Titan was everything that the 70's and 80's anime imports SHOULD have been. The writing was solid without talking down to the children, there was a healthy mix of action and character growth, and the "mech" designs were fresh and imaginative - not to mention inspiring to the imaginations of children at play.

I wish Voltron and Robotech had been treated that way. The fact that WEP released Go-Lion and Dairugger 15 and Harmony Gold allowed the re-release of Macross, Southern Cross, and GC Mospaeda as DVD boxed sets a few years back is almost like an apology.

Hell, they even re-dubbed Macross with Vic Mignola and Brett Weaver!

Hollywood only wants films that stick to a strict formula. Those are what get greenlit. Creating space robot movie with heart won't get approval unless you're Pixar.

Also Macross/Robotech would make for a great live action movie if they put the proper tlc into it. Peter Jackson could turn it into something amazing. I believe Tobey MacGuire bought the film rights to it a few years back but it died in development hell.

Yep, sad but true, Cartoon Network canned Sym-Bionic Titan. Rumor has it that CN cancelled the show because there weren't enough merchandising opportunities. Pricks. There is a "Help Sym-Bionic Titan Get Another Season" Facebook page that has more information about what happened. You can also check out some of the fantastic background art from the show here.

Absolutely! Genndy Tartakovsky is a genius, and he knows how to make the most out of low-budget animation. I've wondered what the Japanese think of this show, although I've heard that it hasn't made it to Japan yet.

dramatic effect. Thought it was a nice touch and added some weight to the scene. Guy is contemplating his own death which is minutes away and the basically the fate of the universe.

The short film itself may not be visually spectacular but the concept of a more bleak, realistic voltron is itself pretty fantastic (if you were a fan of the original at all anyway).

Going to be a bit hard to deal with the Zentradi without using Minmay... Varja (Frontier's main baddie) might be an issue as well. And with no singing you can't awaken the Bird Man (Zero).
