You can still get beer and whine pretty much anywhere. It's just hard liquor that you can't get after 7pm or on Sundays. We've got the same BS here in Oregon. I hate the farking OLCC.

I'm usually very against the State Stores, but this Costco thing doesn't look right. Only big-box 10,000 ft stores can sell booze now. OK, I know where to go for Monarch or Crown, but where do I get high end scotch? Costco isnt going to carry those, neither's Wal-Mart or Safeway.

The State Stores, bad as they are, do have a nice variety, and they do carry high end liquor.

Also there's the little matter of that 27% tax they snuck into the Costco law. According to at least one impartial review, liquor prices in Wa State will actually go UP if this passes. Which to me sort of blows the whole point of rolling the dice on distribution and going ahead and doing it.

Costco wins big though. And we get to fire some union employees at the state stores. But variety seems like it'll drop, maybe a lot. Costco isn't going to carry over 200 whiskey brands, like the State system does now.

And they will wind up taxing us as much or more than they do now. So I just don't see it.

Utah DABC stores have arbitrary selection with a distribution that seems to emphasize the upper middle to high end and the low end.

If ever there is a reasonably priced liquor on the shelves in Utah that can compete with something that costs $5 more for the same quantity, they will simply stop selling it. I've seen this happen over and over again.

The high end is also restricted to main-stream brands. I can get Hendricks gin, but i can't get any of the crazy stuff i see farkers recommend. They just don't sell it here.

And fark you if you like rye. You can have jim beam or you can have something that costs $30-$40 for a 750ml bottle.

And then there's the prices.

Shopping at Wal-Mart wouldn't be the same without the old Mexican vaquero with the gun strapped to his hip buying a handle of tequila and a 30-pack of bud at 6am every Sunday.

I think the overly restrictive liquor laws are ridiculous.

Here in Florida I have six liquor stores within walking distance. And they stay open till 3 AM. This is how life should be. I find these states with "state stores" and odd laws frightening and upsetting. And don't even get me started on Pennsylvania.

Virginia is a state run store state. No Sundays or Holidays, stores close at 10 PM.

There was some talk a while back of privatizing the liquor stores, to save the state some money. But, nothing ever came of it.

Ugh, seriously. Not only is liquor only from state-owned stores, but beer can only be bought by a distributor by the case (or from a restaurant at full menu prices). That really sucks when you want a decent or nice beer (Guinness? $50/case. Chimay, $75 a case!)

I love that the Costco in Arizona has liquor and beer. A case of Spaten Oktoberfest? $22.99. A bottle of 12yr Glenlivet is just under $30. Now, if only they would get Yuengling from their east coast distributors, and sell it nationwide....

This is true where I live. It's a moist county meaning you can only drink at restaurants that serve at least 100 people and get 75 percent of their profit from food. It's farking stupid but there is a petition going around to make the county wet.

My friend once saw two Mexican guys at Meijer returning a shopping cart piled over the top with only Bud cans.

For the next year he bought one bottle of decent scotch a month, and other than that, just drank Bud.

I live in New York, but I go to North Carolina a lot to see my family. New York has private liquor/wine stores, and North Carolina has the state-run liquor stores. The ABC stores in NC are a hell of a lot cheaper than the stores up here, but I also like being able to buy wine in the grocery store, which you can't do in New York. So I guess it's a wash.

There are some misconceptions about the new tax that would be introduced with the privatization, it seems. Looks like there's already a 50+% markup on booze sold at WA state-run liquor stores, and that would go away, so prices would actually go down. But I'm just now getting interested in this story, so heck if I know how accurate I am.

All I know is, there are like...five liquor stores in all of Seattle. Can we just acknowledge that vodka is an ingredient and should be available wherever tomato-based products are sold? Jeez...

Pile of nonsense. I moved to WA from MO a few years ago; liquor is twice as expensive here. Even at a 27% premium over the prices in other states, we'll still save a good amount.

There are specialty wine and beer stores all over the place. Why do you think these stores wouldn't be able to also sell specialty liquor, or that other specialty liquor stores wouldn't pop up? The state stores today have less selection than I've seen in private liquor stores in other states.

In Japan Costco can sell booze, and they have some high end stuff here. They have a Kirkland brand 19 year Macallan scotch (blended by Macallan and aged by a different company). I know not particularly high end, but it is a decent scotch for the $70 price tag. You can also get actual Macallan as well.

If you are into brandy, they have Louis XIII Cognac if you are so inclined. What is really interesting is you can buy a 750 of Remy Martin XO for about 60 bucks...at the duty free in the airport it is $100 so their pricing on even branded stuff is awesome.

Their wine selection is great and they have both originals and Kirkland runs for many wines around the globe. I am quite happy with the Costco liquor selection.

My province only allows givernment run stores in cities and a few approved outlet stores in gas stations far outside the cities to sell liquor. They also just scaled back the hours of operation to be 10am-9pm Mon-Sat and 12-5 on Sundays. The approved outlets are open until 11pm I believe but they are typically a half hour drive into very rural areas.

We got lucky last fall when a local micro-brewery opened a tiny shop in our downtown where they fill up 64 ounce jugs of draft (typically 8 brews to choose from) for $10 and are open until 10pm or 11pm Mon-Sat but still only open 12-5 on Sundays. Sadly, Costco and Walmart aren't allowed to sell liquor here.

The monopoly the state has on Liqour stores is insane. EVERY Store carries the same stuff and it costs more; glad I live across the river from Oregon.

Their Bourbon isn't terrible. I picked up a bottle on a whim and took it on a weekend trip with a bunch of friends and surprisingly it didn't make it through the first night.

No, it's not high-end, but it's better than that Knob Creek crap they keep selling as a "premium" brand.

Growing up in California I had no idea about the crazy liquor laws other states had. Only comparison we had was Nevada, so everyone thought California was super restrictive because the grocery store had to stop selling at 2am and you couldn't buy Everclear. Couldn't believe some of the crazy shiat other states have when I heard about it

Didn't someone, somewhere, say that booze and politics don't mix very well?
