This happens every time there's a major update. It took me a few tries to update my phone and iPad, but it's all working fine now. I don't know what the big deal is, frankly.

My wife's iPhone updates just fine, but iTunes keeps erroring out when it tries to restore all of her apps and settings the way they were before the update.

It took me about 2 hours to finally get my iPhone to update and my iPad took another hour.

A company with the resources Apple has should have anticipated issues like this and should have either beefed up their infrastructure beforehand (their backend should be scalable enough to add capacity on demand if they built it correctly) or they should stagger the updates like Microsoft has been doing with the Mango.

Some of the issues seem to be stupid design decisions. When reading up on what is causing the issues for my wife's phone, it seems like the problem is that at the very end of the restore process, the phone checks into Apple's servers. If it can't get a connection because of the high traffic, the restore part of the update process fails. It's really a retarded design if a local restore depends on being able to talk to Apple servers.

Worked great for me all three times I did it.

It eventually worked for me. All my apps were deleted -- which was my fault for not backing them up -- but all the other data is still there.

The new features for the most part aren't too obvious if you haven't seen any promotional material.

Other problems reported:

Having to reorganize all your apps.
Backup taking a long time. One user told us it took three hours.
Downloading the upgrade taking a long time. It's more than 700 MB, and because the servers are so overburdened, it's taking longer than usual.
Inability to register for iCloud.

First world problems!

I just wait and update a couple weeks after the release; of course their servers are going to be slammed the first couple days.

2011-10-13 01:02:01 AM
I'm in the process of it now. Took 3-4 tries for it to connect. But this happened last time they did a major OS upgrade. I waited until late tonight for that reason.

The iTunes update took a while to DL and reset. The actual iphone update is still going on if you count my music/movies that are still restoring.

First impressions: I like the new text interface/bubble as opposed to the previous. The iMessage functionality should be pretty slick, assuming Apple doesn't have the issues RIM does/did with BBM. I'm looking forward to not having to pay for an unlimited text plan as soon as the fetching Ms. Joker upgrades her Droid to an iPhone in a couple months.

Also, the Facebook, Twitter, Flixster, and Find My iPhone apps were available for immediate update. Unfortunately, Pandora, Netflix, and IHeartRadio are not, and I use them the most. I'm sure within the next 48-72 hours most major apps I have will have an update available.

Anyway, we shall see how the whole iCloud thing goes. I've already planned on buying the 55GB service soon and only getting a 16gb 4S some time in early 2012 or when my 3GS craps out, whichever is first.

Does anybody know if the Cloud will stream audio or is it just going to push the file to the device? Nothing on Apple's website I've seen says it will stream.

It's times like this I thank FSM that I no longer work in that hellhole of a call center for Crapple. I guarantee they are getting swamped with calls from people who have tried to update and now their music is gone, or their contacts won't sync from Exchange or whatever.

Good riddance.

F that noise.

Still my favorite phone call was from the woman who wondered why her iphone no longer worked after it fell into the cup of coffee she had the phone balanced on while she was walking up stairs. And then was pissed because that wasn't covered by the warranty.

800 meg OSX 10.7.2 update on my laptop (fios internet):

attempt 1: 45 minutes at start, eventually ----> 5 hours.

Quit and restarted the download:

Attempt 2: 2 hours ---> 3 hours

Quit

Attempt 3: 4 hours

Quit

Attempt 4: 2 minutes total download time. Success!

Fail akamai servers are fail.

Apple should implement bittorrent on patch days.

2011-10-13 01:09:51 AM
I had to install a new version of iTunes first. I then downloaded the new iOS around 1:15.

It was installed, my phone restarted a few times, and then I had to wait for my apps to be restored. That took 10 minutes or so. It sucked how some of the apps didn't go back to their proper folders, but not that serious. I also forgot that my music wasn't on my computer, so the music on my phone got wiped out and I had to transfer it from my car's MP3 player to my laptop and then re-sync. (Also lost my custom ringtones =( ).

However, the most annoying thing was finding out that Newsstand is unable to be removed from the phone and it acts like a folder. But, when you want to read something, the app shows up in the task bar AND newsstand shows up in the task bar. Seems like poor programming to have a "folder" show up there. And, of course, not all the news apps are designed to use it yet. NYTimes seems to be the only one working with it. I'll have to wait for NPR, APMobile, USA Today, and BBC News to update themselves.

All that being said, seriously. Talk about being incredibly nitpicky. It's a goddamn computer in the palm of my hand that can send and receive information from outer-f*cking-space in seconds, not to mention telling my friend across the country that he sucks at golf within SECONDS of me seeing his updated handicap.

By the way, is anyone having problems with information showing up in the notification center?

We could, but she is looking to move to the iPhone because of her loathsome Droid. She really, really hates that thing. For that matter, my folks and my sis are all on iPhones as is, along with quite a few friends, coworkers, and such, basically 80% of the people i regularly text to. The iMessage thing for that reason alone could cause me to lower my ATT bill dramatically.

Now that everything is working properly on the phone, I'm really digging the wireless sync capability. I just need the damned apps to update and I'll be pretty damned happy.

FWIW, I'm with Blldg4life. There's more computing power in the palm of your hand than all the Apollo, Gemini, SpaceLab, and Mercury, programs combined with a healthy dose of Concorde and the Manhattan Project thrown in, AND its pretty damned easy to use. Lighten up, Franceses.

I do love my iphone, but so far can't see much appeal in the update. It looks to me, based on a cursory glance at least, that Apple has invented* most of the new features directly from Android. The pull-down notification menu at the top of the screen is the most obvious, but the others that I've seen look quite familiar as well.

Personally, I don't care for Android. It's a fine platform and deserving of its many accolades, but after trying it out for myself I decided that it wasn't for me. I don't want my iphone to be more like an Android. Otherwise I would have bought one of those instead.

*I have decided that the only way to render an Apple fanboy's claims halfway honest is to assume that in their mind "invented" is a synonym for "copied."

I see. I was just asking because most people I know are on iPhones but I was looking at maybe the Motorola Photon, really the only other option I have with AU KDDI (Japan). Is there much else besides iMessage that is iPhone-iPhone communication only?

Don't want to lose my ATT unlimited data plan. Otherwise, I'd go for it. Its easier again for her to upgrade in a few months to a Verizon iPhone and I to keep my current unlimited data plan than to go Google Voice.

I tried three times to update my iPhone, only to end up with a nice glowing screen after the last attempt. No big deal I figured, I will just do the restore. It restored after I rebooted my computer...to iOS 5. Success!

I used the same technique with my iPad. More success! (The reader feature looks pretty useful.)

The process was not a big deal for me, being a geek since the days of the AppleII has its advantages. However, I don't think I can say the same if an iphone that appeared to be dead happened to my fanboi friends who are not technologically advanced, you know, the people who made Apple the success it is and who the haters on fark love to laugh at. Good thing I advised them to wait a few days before updating.

Going through the restore now when I should be asleep. Would have finished a couple hours ago if my ISP (for which I work) hadn't decided TONIGHT to do maintenance. Frakkers.

The iPhone update went pretty smoothly once my internet was back up. Next is my iPad, and I'm looking forward to the Notes update. Looks pretty cool.

I was about ready to throw my iJesusPhone 4 out the window. 5 times before I could get my phone back to normal. The first 4 were just trying to restore it to usability mode, rather than, you know, just a black glowing screen. Thank christ I did a back-up right beforehand. The stupid thing still didn't put my folders and apps in the way I had them, and it took a 5th attempt before my custom ringtones would actually synch and show up on the device. Apple kinda dropped the ball on this, things were going fine until the last point of installation, but then the servers couldn't connect and so it goes. It also claimed I had no disc space left on my computer, which is why it came up with an error code, despite having 1.5GB RAM and 170GB of HDD space free. I closed Firefox, and then had no issues, even though Firefox freed up maybe 50MB of RAM. Just works my ass.

I'm also not really seeing a lot of "revolutionary" features in iOS 5, and will probably finally jailbreak the little bastard so I can have widgets. Still no goddamn widgets, and it's still lacking a lot of functionality of Android, even though this release basically copied them. I'm not even running a "real/proper" Android device (Rooted Nook Color), and see that Android has a lot more going for it than the iJesusPhone right now. Hopefully Apple will get with the program within the next 2 years (Bell Canada has 3 year contracts on their phones, has the iJesusPhone for exactly a year today), or I'll be getting an Android phone for my next upgrade.

I know this thread is probably dead, but maybe someone who checks in can help me figure this out.

Current phone: 3GS running 4.0, JB'ed using...something. I can't remember.

Next phone: a 4S, which hopefully will be ready for me to pick up tomorrow.

The correct answer to "how do I get all of my photos, apps, addresses, etc from current phone to next phone" is "backup 3gs" -> "restore to 4S", yes?

If that's not the case, what should I do? My theory assumes that the 4S will ship with iOS5, so I suppose if I'm wrong about that it's a whole other level of pain.

Incidentally I've abused my 3GS and admit it, but apparently it's quite bitter about being replaced and the volume buttons decided to fall off (!) sometime today. Good thing I stopped biting my nails so I can still jiggle the volume switch... of course that won't help the fact that the manner mode switch barely works either, and the power switch doesn't work at all... but at least I can still make calls and I've gone 2+ years without scratching the screen!

It's like your girlfriend knows that you're going to break up with her in a week and decides she's going to make your life miserable until the other shoe drops.

Took no time at all. Hit the button and 10.7.2 downloaded, then iOS5 for the slate. About 10 - 20min all in all, my connection went from 0 to 2.2MB/s which for a 20Mbp/s link is about its maximum.

I have to wonder if this is a "Apple's content delivery network can't cope" story or an "American ISP's are shiat" story.

I was getting a 3002 error on my iPad, so instead of doing an update, I did a backup and restore. That got iOS 5 installed. I like I'll never have to plug into iTunes again. I just charge it at night like normal and it automatically backs up to iCloud.

Random notes (in case anyone cares) after having updated my iTouch 4G

-iTunes wants to be at 10.5, and it militantly refused to update in place. Had to remove & reinstall.

-It took FOREVER, even after the download updated, and midway through the content restore iTunes crapped out. Wouldn't even close with Windows Task Manager. Rebooted, restarted iTunes, and did a final sync and that seems to have fixed it.

-After it updates iOS, but before it gets to the content restore, you must answer a few initialization questions on the device itself. iTunes doesn't tell you "Hey, dummy, check your device", and the only way you know the device is waiting is if you unlock it yourself. Nice and user friendly, dumapples.

-On the plus side: the screen looks a lot sharper with the new display drivers.

Turns out that millions of people all trying to connect to a relatively small batch of servers can overload the available connections? No way!

Of course, Androids won't have this problem since updates are pushed through the carriers anywhere from 2-24 months after Google releases the update.

Not sure, this is my first iOS upgrade. But it seems to format the device, dump the firmware on it so it's factory fresh, then starts layering on your stuff. So I'd assume yes and I agree it is very odd as I don't remember my G1 needing that when I was bouncing between CyanogenMod ROM's... backup yes, full wipe, not so much.

As long as you transferred your purchases from the device to iTunes, or bought them
through iTunes in the first place, and you have a recent up-to-date sync it should restore
them automatically (barring, of course, iTunes crashing as I mentioned above).

Everything looks like its where it should be (notes in my note program, music, high
scores on ANGRY BIRDS, etc).

iTunes created a backup and then restored from that. I don't remember having to go through that for other updates. It may just be for major revisions.

I still have all my data. The update too forever to download, though.

On a side note, does anyone else notice that the GPS seems to be more sensitive? Or maybe it's updating faster. Whatever it is, it just seems to act a little differently, moves faster on the map for some reason. I wonder if maybe they added some kind of algorithm to try to self-correct the tiny inaccuracies the GPS sats include in their broadcasts?

Selective Availability has been turned off for about eleven years. I do believe, however, that the civilian signal is not as precise as the military signal but there is no longer intentional introduction of error.

I've noticed that on my Android phone as well. Here's my personal theory (long/boring)

There's essentially two types of messages that the satellites send out. One is the "constant" message that allows a device to to determine its distance from the satellite in question. The other is a message that is sent out at a regular (but not constant) frequency that tells the device what the current location/routes are for the satellites in the area. This is why when you turn off your GPS and then turn it back on it finds your location pretty quickly, because it has a recent set of data for where the satellites are.

Either... the frequency for the "where are the satellites" message has gone up, or they've started making that data available over the internet in addition to the GPS satellites sending it out. My theory is the latter because it seems like every time I turn on my GPS I see my 3G ping a few times. It may be a coincidence, but it's my theory nonetheless.
