Probably the only president they could name when asked.

Except for George Washington, whose wife was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.

How dare the President support the state laws that allow medical marijuana, and at the same time go after those who violate those laws with interstate commerce. It's like when Obama supports immigration reform, and deports a record number of illegals. How dare he uphold the rule the of law!

I think by definition Nixon has to be the worst since, you know, he started the whole drug war. So I don't know about worst, but I'd put Obama in the bottom third.

I'm not sure its as simple as that. From the stuff I've read, it seems that the DoJ is sending some conflicting messages. Some sources seem to indicate what you are saying, but in others it appears the enforcement is more arbitrary.

What;s really chilling (not to be confused with chillum) is the Kafkaesque posture the IRS is taking toward auditing grow businesses.

Problem is the Mexican Cartels are big suppliers to the dispensaries, especially in Southern California. Very few of the California dispensaries get their product from local farms. Some up north in the Humboldt area, but other than that it is a big racket for organized crime.

Kind of hard for the DOJ and the prez to turn a blind eye to that.

Especially when their blind eyes are already turned to banks and corporations.

gilgigamesh: What;s really chilling (not to be confused with chillum) is the Kafkaesque posture the IRS is taking toward auditing grow businesses.

This is the only real problem right now. The dispensaries and grow operations will be just fine though, despite their posturing. A dispensary owner saying that not being able to deduct staff salaries is going to cause him to close his doors is maybe one step down from Bill O'Reilly saying he is going to stop doing his show if his taxes go up 3%. I am all for the gun permit thing so far - even if this sounds like a massive rationalization on my part - because that law has always been in effect and now people are aware of it.

I can see how not being able to deduct ordinary business expenses could cause a business to shutter their doors. At that point, they are paying taxes on their entire revenue.

not being able to deduct staff salaries

I thought the warning said that all business expenses were not deductible, i.e. the operation would be taxed on gross receipts at a rate around 20-38%.

This is correct. This means NO expenses. Not rent, not utilities, not wages, not property taxes. Nothing is permitted.

They're charging $50 an eighth all the way up at basically every dispensary I've been to. They'll be okay.

And what are the costs associated with selling that 1/8th? You can't just consider the base cost of the plant material.

Average street dealer can make money doing that. They don't have a storefront, employees, or much overhead other than a cell phone, baggies, and a scale.

Showing that even though he intended to change the way things are done, he was not able to overcome the amazing power structure already in place that keeps anything in this country from changing. The president only has so much power and the other 90% of the power belongs to the people who pull the strings and those people have money and fundamentalism.

Without knowing profit margin, it would be difficult to say just how strapped dispensaries will be under this new interpretation. I do know that the expenses for Harborside (the one in the article) would amount to a great deal. I've been there. I seriously doubt that they are going to make enough sales to cover their overhead and taxes. It just doesn't seem feasible to me.

Seriously? Mexican cartels are providing much of the dispensary crops? I don't know a damn thing about that market but it's so easy to grow indoors I just don't see why it would be necessary to contract with a criminal element.

I'd gladly grow to supply dispensaries just 'cause I like plants and watching them grow.... and I like money too. Why are a bunch of farking Mexi cartels even necessary?

You forgot paying off corrupt cops, guns, medical costs associated with other peoples guns, lawyer's fees, product or profits stolen by rivals, protection costs from other criminals, and that great raise they get when they switch over to making license plates.

Holy crap! Those prices are ridiculous. Goes for $40 per 1/8 on the street here. Clubs and growers will usually flip it for under $200/oz.

Why the fark does marijuana even need to be medicinal? It's great if a substance ends up having medical benefits, but let's please acknowledge that people just want to get farked up and then go from there. I've known people who would do crack or meth so they could keep their job when drug testing came around; they would use marijuana instead if that were an option. How about people who turn to synthetic marijuana and end up have farking seizures.

I'm for the decriminalization/legalization of all drugs and we can't expect to make any positive changes if we keep dealing with them - especially marijuana - in the manor with which we are accustomed.

Supporting medical marijuana on the briefs were "red state" Attorneys General who thought the principle of federalism was more important than their opposition to the drug.

WTF Indeed: How dare he uphold the rule the of law!

The rule of law is a farce. It is an administrative tool for political enforcement. We have so many laws that they cannot all be enforced, so it has turned this country into a place where only selective enforcement occurs.

It's a systematic crackdown on the entire industry. Everybody who has the slightest hand involved from banking to property management is a target. Also, as of today, advertisers:

Do Rehnquist and Thomas qualify as conservative? They voted in favor of the medical marijuana law, whereas all your far left scotus libs voted against the law.

That's something worth contemplating, don't you think?

I can't even tell you how far off the reservation you are.
