So they took money meant for investments and bought real estate....yet they were also able to pay back back their investors plus themselves?

What's the problem?

They paid back the previous investors, not the current investors that gave them the 1.3M and were told would be used for investments they felt comfortable with.

Ironies noted, but I've never seen a cop retire poor and it has nothing to do with Social Security.

They have a union with a strong marketing message that appeals to the voters.

If you're joking, it was excellent. If you're serious, you might be a cop, so thanks for your service. If the latter case, your comments appears disingenuous, since you'd be the first to know law enforcement have strong unions at city, county, state, and federal levels, but that they make deals, sometimes nearly coercive deals, with the executive branch. Not hating, just saying in most jurisdictions it has very little directly to do with voters these days.

But my point was a little different. Cops, particularly since 9/11, have access to information and revenue streams which allow them insight into operations most citizens are unaware of. Not to mention the other perks we don't need to get into here. It all adds up to a lifestyle and retirement that beats MD's in many jurisdictions. Since 9/11, unwarranted paranoia has apparently led to significant expansions in law enforcement authority, compensation, benefits, and retirement. Police are a necessary service, but arguably worthy of equal or less compensation than teachers, who directly assist in producing workers. We need workers and production in the nation currently, not surplus levels of services that take money from them.
