He even enlisted the help of then-U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter to have the Silver Star upgraded to a U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor.

What could possibly go wrong with this plan?

There's no reason to lie about being in the service, either you were in or were not. In reality there are so few MOH, Silver Star, Service Cross winners that if you ever dare to claim to have one, then you bet your ass some real vet will surely find out.

Why is that a twist? Seems logical that a [perceived] hero would be a better draw.

Everyone loves to hate on the guy who never served and lied about it. That's understandable. But there doesn't seem to be any agreement on what to do with those who actually *did* show up, but whose stories grow more and more unbelievable each year.

I hear them from time to time, I'm not sure if its some kind of ego thing, but it amazes me how someone bringing water to squad suddenly goes to being "while under fire, there I was with a dozen canteens and all, grenades exploding..."

In reality the heroes always die, the lucky few who survive get credit of some sort. I always get nagged on because a few have asked me "ever been deployed" and when I answer they are like "who the fark is this guy?" Those are the ones you worry about telling the "bigger fish" stories.

Butler is a stand-out. I discussed him in class and a few former Marines spoke up and mentioned that they never taught what Butler said after he got out of the service.

BTW, the British call these guys "Walts" and there are some hilarious examples:

For starters, Military Service Records are notorious for being inaccurate. I tend to have more respect for people who actually managed to retire from the military rather than any award they may or may not have been awarded. Trust me when I say that military awards are more politics than anything else. Retired military types gave it all until the could not anymore. These people attended countless award ceremonies, where they were overlooked again and again. They may not even know how integral they were to their unit and the entire branch of military they served. They may have no idea how many lives they saved just because they were the best on a consistent basis.

All I can say about this guy is that...well, at least he served. However, it is one thing to have served and claim you were a Seal, Marine Recon, or Green Beret (this is more common than you know) and it is another to claim you received some of the highest awards that the military can offer. I parlay my opinion to the powers that be.

Pretend you are firing a TOW from a Humvee, imagine Tow coming 2-3 feet out of the tube then drops to the ground with a motor rocket malfunction, now brown your pants like I did - seriously while you are running away.

Both times were with live warheads not practice dummies, neither wen't off but still you never hear about the guy who was just on the training range and have his legs blown off.

Yep. My Uncle-in-law never told his family anything that he went through in Nam. Once I married into the family and he found out that I was a veteran and he got to know me he shared all his stories with me. He had pictures of dead Vietnamese that he snuck home with him that he showed me. He volunteered for the Marines.

Also my Sgt. Major in the Cav was about 5'4" and 110lbs. Craziest bastard I ever met. He was a tunnel rat.

Getting new decorations is all great fun until the wife whines at you until you agree to take her to the annual service ball and you have to get your medals remounted. I guess that's why they give us several hundred dollars each year for uniform maintenance but damn.

Let me say for the record that I served in the Army, but never shot at anyone or vice-versa. I received exactly zero medals and never did anything remotely heroic, unless binge drinking counts.
