Okay, the kid was in the wrong for violating the school's policies, and the school administrators were idiots for enforcing their policies in such an hair-brained manner.

Having said that, I think that one of the nice things that I remember about being a teenager was having the freedom to wear stupid clothes and adopt stupid hair styles without having to worry about it.

Give kids a little freedom. It doesn't hurt and life will take away those privileges soon enough.

Sheldon's stepmother told KSLA News 12 it wasn't the rule that she disagreed with, but rather how the school handled the situation.

If she didn't disagree with the rule, why did she allow him to go to school with the designs on his head?

"Grooming violations"

...for when school administrators want to show you that you're a piece of meat that they own.

Seriously, I don't see why a teacher farking a student is so wrong. We already let administrators do pretty much anything they want under the guise of "ZERO TOLERANCE!"

The principal, who started her first year at the school this August, said she was told by another faculty member that they had handled the problem with a marker in the past.

And apparently thought it was an OK idea?

"Oh, we never use band-aids. We've always used the soldering iron from the janitor's closet."

Was talking to the lead singer of DINK (years and years ago) and he was saying he was just getting over being "violently ill for a week" because he wrote Giant messages on his body before a show (lots) then performed/sweated, and his skin absorbed the ink and poisoned him.

The kid should have a male pattern baldness cut, then fill in the shaved portion with marker. They all should do that.

All this concern over how kids have their hair and what they wear. Maybe schools should be paying more attention to if our children are learning. Hint: they're not.

Learning? What's that?

Oh, you mean they should be paying more attention to making the children pass the standardized tests that get the school federal funding.

Using a sharpie to fill in the gap was wrong.
What they should have done was buzzed all his hair down to the scalp so the design would be gone.

Oh, boo hoo. It's a Sharpie. That ink is about as permanent as a salt pillar in the Amazon rainforest. Comes out with any sort of everyday solvent, like rubbing alcohol.

When I was in grade 12, one kid shaved stripes in his hair for the yearbook photo. I overheard a girl talking about how she wanted to dye his scalp orange and call him Tigger.

(This is the same kid who brought in an old lawnmower to art class, removed the engine, replaced it with a beef heart in a jar and spraypainted the whole thing silver.)

A kid with marker in his hair. Sure, that won't draw attention in class. There's no way they could've color-matched it. It doesn't make the pattern go away.

The kid should come back tomorrow with a giant bag of peanuts, and throw them willy-nilly into every room. That'll learn 'em.

Even if it's a good policy, it's probably not worth confronting a teenager.

Is this a "before" picture or an "after" picture? I think I see an intricate pattern in the hair. I would presume the attention-whoring parents took this picture when he came home and went sobbing to the local news. Shave his head and be done with it and stop sending your kid to school looking like a gang member.

Walker: All this concern over how kids have their hair and what they wear. Maybe schools should be paying more attention to if our children are learning. Hint: they're not.

The first stage of teaching kids anything is to get them to sit down, shut up, and focus. That's the goal of uniform rules, to keep students from focusing on social shenanigans and leave them with nothing left to do but maybe pay attention for once.

I mean, it's not particularly effective and in this case I doubt a fairly standard alternating haircut was really all that distracting, but this is actually them trying to do exactly what you're suggesting.

That sounds pretty sweet, actually. Downright badass for HS level art.

Because if you don't have a bunch of arbitrary rules to keep them busy the students might focus on how much the school is failing them instead.

Certainly worked for me.

By the fifth grade I had figured out that a majority of people in power are irrational, illogical, selfish people that are using the position only for their own personal gains.

When I was in school, the only rules for hair were that it needed to appear clean and well-groomed, and that beards, moustaches, and goatees were not permitted. Why do the administrators care if kids show up with lines in his hair?
