At this rate, we're going to have, like, four teams in Los Angeles next season.

I reeeally hope that the Vikings can get a stadium built. I have been a fan for basically as long as I can remember and when the North Stars left town I quit watching pro hockey almost altogether. I just dont know what I would do if the Vikes left. I cant even begin to think of a replacement for my 3 decades+ of self deprecation...

I'm still hoping the Vikings get their stadium. I don't think you can have both the Lakers and Vikings in LA. That would just be mean.

I'm a Twins fan I dont watch basketball (It has something to with being 6-5 and every relative asking why I dont play basketball for my entire life) Cant bring myself to watch the Wild. Im a UND fan so Gophers OUT of the question. As for the Lynx basketball and womens basketball at that. So yeah either I start watching college rowing or LaCrosse. Just build it babay!

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that the stadium isn't somewhere inside the 694/494 loop. Who wants to go out to BFE for a football game?

Why do they even need a new stadium? The Twins needed a new stadium, that's for sure, but why do the Vikings need one?

Yeah, it'd be outside the loop. It'd also be next to the loop.

The proposed location is all of ten minutes past the Dome if coming from the west/south.

Despite being from the Twin Cities, I haven't followed this that closely. I'm against the stadium using public funds, but at the same time I don't see why there should be a public vote. This isn't a direct democracy. What do we elect our politicians for anyway?

The Dome sucks.

I am not saying that has to be THE reason. I am saying it's a darn good reason.

2011-10-12 11:26:12 AM
There's no reason the Metrodome couldn't be renovated. There's no reason the Wilf's can't finanance a large chunk of a new stadium. This is not some ownership group trying to spark redevelopment or embracing the community or anything, it's all about money and business and I really oppose the idea of the public putting more than 30-40% into a new single sport stadium.

But if the Vikings leave who will Packer fans hate on? Chicago isn't as fun anymore. Detroit scares me to death with their D. Then we'd get St. Louis in our division and they could care less about football.

The Vikings trying to take the voters out of the equation is shiatty; however, let's not pretend the the "stock" is anything but a money grab from suckers willing to pay $200 for a nice piece of paper. At least it's voluntary one, I guess.

Then if the LA Vikings win a championship we can all laugh at the fans still in Minnesota, because, like the Browns, all they would have to do is get out of their current site, and BOOM they're champions.

As part of our state laws anytime there's a raise to the sales tax it is supposed to go to a public vote, though the county can request from the state to go around that.

Besides that, if you look at the plan I don't think that the public wuld really want to fund what would mostly be a real-estate deal that highly favors the Wilfs.

I've been to a few Vikes games in the dome, in my personal experience it wasn't bad enough to warrant a new stadium. That place is fine for football.

When it's as run-down as Wrigley Field, then you can call ramshackle. Humphreydome is only ~27 years old - is its debt even retired yet??

I don't like seeing that happen to fanbases that come out and support their team. Minnesota fans deserve to keep their team. It's the Jaguars that ought to get moved, not the Vikings.

Same boat. Moved out of the region, but still watch every game. Damned if I am going to become a Redskins fan. I'd probably just end up switching allegiances every year to whatever team is the biggest sad-sack franchise that might have a chance. And, of course, whoever is playing the Packers.

Could we instead offer LA a third NBA team? Or at least merge them with the Clippers?

Can someone explain to me how LA can build a football field to attract a team without public funds but other cities can't pay for a new stadium without public funds to keep a team?

2011-10-12 01:26:25 PM
FTFA:
On the same day, the Metropolitan Council issued a report questioning the viability of the plan, suggesting that the costs to clean up the site of the proposed stadium - a former munitions plant - will be more than estimated.

So... We have to build road & make utility improvements, AND cleanup a munitions dump to build it there? When we have a perfectly good site downtown to build a stadium where we don't have to do that (at least not to the same scale). I'm sure Ziggy would be happy to front the money to clean that up. I'm sure.

It's easy to raise venture capital in the second largest media market in the country. Not so much in the 15th.

As a Packer Fan I've been taught as a youth to hate the Bears first, closely followed by the Viqueens. I really don't want Minnesota to lose them - as much as I hate them I think Minnesota has good football fans and they deserve a team.

That being said, I LOVE the fact they suck! I also love the fact they never got a ring and that they probably never will! Suck it Viqueens!!

Fair enough. I think my point still remains. Plus, Farmer's Field would use 27% new tax revenue to finance the stadium. Link (new window) It's TIF Financing, which is different than a sales tax levy, but still public money. Voters in City of Industry also approved $500 million in bonds for infrastructure improvements to the city for the stadium. So it's not as extensive as the public financing that would go to the 'Queens new stadium, but it's not like Farmer's Field would be purely private.

I don't think you know what you're talking about with that "fact" you presented. 73% of the cost of building the stadium is paid by AEG (through bonds and other financing for which they are liable not the city) and 27% of the the building will be on the new tax revenue generated by the new stadium plus additional business in the area. No public funds are used to build this stadium in downtown LA. The plan to build a stadium in City of Industry would have used public funding though.
