Whiskey so potent you'll go down faster than a cherry tree......or Martha.

Why do these companies always price themselves out of the market?

It's got the potential to be the next Jack Daniel's. Authentic Washington whiskey. Run it at a loss for few months and you can make back your investments while the brand builds.

Instead they go for ultra premium and it's more expensive than shiat I've seen that's known to be worth the price in Tokyo, where there is NO upper limit on vanity.

Why would anyone buy it?

Didn't he say, "I cannot tell a rye"?

doglover: Why do these companies always price themselves out of the market?

In this case, a limited run, proceeds go to an educational fund.

They might do better setting up a "Newman's Own"-style brand where they mass-market it and thereby have a steady revenue stream going to the fund, but that's probably crazy talk.

If you can find it, Old Potrero 18th Century is supposed to be pretty good.

I would love to try it, but $185 could buy me around five other really good whiskeys.

Rye as a niche has made somewhat of a come back, based on several 1700's recipes. Small batch Ryes have sold well. It won't ever compete with Bourbons, but....

Nice to see Rye not being dumped into Canadian 'Blends'.

/Rye Twp. Pa.
//every farmer distilled then. Couldn't store large amounts of grain.

Mix it with corned beef ice cubes, and you would really have something.

$185 seems a bit steep for an unproven whiskey.

Having just come back from the bourbon trail in Kentucky, I agree with these sentiments.

And, coincidentally, just seven or eight miles down the New England Thruway from Rye.

It is. I bought it just to try good rye and it's wonderful. Highly reccomended.

I do not want my whiskey to be interested in 'crossing the Delaware'. If you know what I mean.

except that you can't buy it at Mt Vernon since all distilled spirits in VA must be sold by a state-run ABC store.

DC Resident here. Toured the grounds several times. The whiskey and brandy are made AT GEORGE WASHINGTON'S GRIST MILL AND DISTILLERY.

It's not a giant JD or Seagrams plant. It's a 3-floor grist mill and one-story, four-pot distillery. It's also made by hand, using techniques common at the time with GW's recipe, from grain grown on his farm.

I'm not rich enough to afford it, but if I was, you could bet I'd be getting a bottle. It goes to support area schools, is a piece of history, and is hand made. I'd never pay $185 for a snobby, holier-than-thou whiskey that's not 10 times better than a good $18 bottle, but this is neat.

Overall, a pretty cool thing!

I think I'll just buy groceries.
