I've lived in this area all my life and I still don't get the mummers.

/my ass is still cold from sitting on Market Street watching that damn parade.
//News this morning said they rented the hall out, that's who go busted.

As far as I can figure out, they're some sort of cross between Mardi Gras/Gasparilla "Krewes" and the Shriners.

Market St...
There's your problem. The parade has and always will be a South Philly thing. There's a whole other Social aspect to the parade you're missing out on that only happens in neighborhoods, not in the judging area.

A long time ago, in another life, I was out partying in philly, and since PA clubs that sell liquor must close at 2:30am, there are always after-hours "underground" parties.

We ended up at a Mummer's hall. A bunch of goombas was patting people down at the door for weapons. They were selling NO2 out of the closet where they held the costumes.

Some people may suggest that there is a connection between the Mummer's and South Philly Italian Mob... I dunno, never saw anything like that.

In Newfoundland Mummers are an age old tradition and they have nothing to do with these people except for the 'being drunk' part.

They wear masks or pillow cases and go door to door on christmas morning where they are welcomed as guests. They sing christmas carols and are fed cake and rum until their identies have been discovered, after which they go to the next house and so on and so on.

Our roots are just as old - Credit where credit is due, we've had the parade in it's present form for over 100 years with a tradition going back to the mid 17th century. It's not some new event...

So, it's a different kind of Mummer then this?

Video and song... (new window)

My bad it was Broad but I was always taken as a kid and never wanted to go. It was one of those things you weren't asked about and forced to go to. Hence the hatred towards that long lasting Philly/South Jersey tradition.

They were also a hell of a lot better when I was kid (yeah yeah onion on my belt, get off my lawn). They started at 7 in the morning and went on until it was over. But right before I left Philly the mayor had changed it to be at most 8 hours long I believe.

Growing up in the city, it was something I looked forward too. It was basically the same family celebration as Christmas without the presents, but with a parade. Got to see my whole family and friends at my grandfathers house and we only went out to the street when the String Bands were performing, Sometimes we would go out to see friends of our parents that were performing with the bands. It was just a tradition we grew up with. It was about eating and drinking well, having a good time and finishing out the holidays with style.

Now that I have kids (and yes I now live in Jersey) we go over my Uncle and Aunt's house who still live in the city. But it's the same clan and same celebration I've known since I was a kid, minus some dearly departed and plus some new additions, including my own.

My gf's family are from outside St. John's so I got to experience mummers a couple Christmases ago. It was a hoot! Apparently the practice is banned in St. Johns or any of the larger towns.

I remember those days. It wasn't just the mayor, although he didn't help. It was the stupid prima donna Fancy Divisions wanting to move their section off the street and into the Convention center. So after the String bands go up the street there's nothing but the guys with brooms and the police cars unblocking the streets. There used to be a whole other section after them but in the mid 90's all we heard was:

"Waaah! Our props are to big!
Waaah! It's too cold!
Waaah! We think we're special!"

Bunch of nancy's that can't hang, doing the same freakin dance to the same tired club music. THAT is NOT what the parade is about.

That being said, neither is renting out your club to be a brothel on the second Tuesday of the month. To be fair though, the first Tuesday of the month is the Beef and Beer night...
So....

The first I ever read about the mummers was in a short story about some breakdown in socity and they took over the governing of Philly and every year at the parade if they tapped you on the shoulder you were to be a member but if they kissed you you were marked for death. It was a long time ago

Never a fan, but I'm also not a fan of wrestling or the Three Stooges which attract the same crew.

It would be interesting if the Occupy Philly campout jamboree will be there New Year's Day. They are the reason the Phillies lost because stole our rally staging area

My mom's side of the family is from Philly/ South Jersey and we'd go see the parade when I was a kid. I remember Broad Street being packed- barely any room to walk, crazy party atmosphere, noise and vendors and people drunk at 9 AM. It was great. I usually ended up watching the parade on tv because it was too damn cold to stand outside.

Mummer: a drunk guy in a dress carrying an umbrella. May be covered in feathers and mirrors, or playing string instruments, or wearing them golden slippers. Possibly all of the above.

Police hauled off kegs of beer and dozens of people during the overnight raid. Most of the nearly two-dozen women were naked or nearly naked, and sex acts were going on right out in the main banquet room.

How do I become a Mummer?

You have to ramble all night, and some part of the day.
