Ryan, whose relationship with the 37-year-old Mason stretched back to their Baltimore Ravens days, boasted before the season that the wideout could have 90-100 receptions in the Jets' offense.

Rex Ryan made a prediction that didn't come true??? Imagine my surprise...

Yeah, i'm pretty sure Sanchez has thrown -3 passes to him...which sounds impossible until you watch Dirty play a game.

A source told The News that Mason's criticisms of the offense and his inability to grasp the playbook contributed to his departure.

Brian Schottenheimer's offense doesn't exactly strike me as one rife with complexity.

Maybe they meant he literally couldn't hold on to it, you know? Might be a problem for a WR.

I enjoyed Mason in Baltimore, but it does seem like the last season or two he has really gotten mouthy. Guess he stepped on one too many feet in NYC and the Jets are willing to kick him out. I think it's interesting they took a 7th round conditional. The guys on the radio this morning were saying that Mason is on his last legs career-wise and was lucky to get this, otherwise he may be living hand to mouth soon enough!

This was something that struck me as well, the guy is a proven veteran and an exceptional route runner, to say he can't grasp the offense sounds like a bit of farce.

Everyone in Baltimore knows that Mason always talked shiat. As long as he produced on the field, it wasn't a problem. However now that he's not producing, but still talking the same shiat, it is causing problems... for other teams.

I'm a person who didn't mind Mason getting the boot, but I do mind that they got rid of Heap.

Yeah, I was a little confused that Baltimore got rid of both Mason and Heap, but they seem to be doing just fine without them.

I think his inability to keep his mouth shut was the bigger issue...

I can't find it at work but someone should post the clip of Belichick cussing at him during a Ravens/Pats game. The Pats were winning and Mason was still talking shiat, Bill set him straight.

I didn't like Heap going either, it was time though. They have two younger and faster TE's with Pitta and Dickson and Heap was always injury prone. He's hurt and not playing now from what I've heard.

I kind of like they shook up the team, it was obvious some changes were needed to help them get deeper in the playoffs, gotta see if it pays off now.

GimpyNip: Belichick biatch slapped Mason a few seasons ago.

Pats fans get on Ochocinco's ass but trust me, he's better than Mason.

What's with the Titans taking on diva WRs in the middle of the season? They took Moss last year too.

According to this article Mason's being traded to the Texans, but your point about Moss still stands, I think. :)

And had Mason stayed in Baltimore, he probably would be our leading receiver in number of catches.

2011-10-12 01:14:58 PM
The Jets should have got rid of the offensive coordinator instead. Last week the Jets faced the Pats who have one of the weakest pass rushes in the league, but the Jets want to run the ball instead?

Yeah because he'd whine if Flacco didn't throw to him...

It has been my experience that NFL teams who have a clown for a head coach are usually entertaining for a couple of years, then not so much.

He should have retired a few years ago. He was always mouthy, but especially in the last couple years. He and Housmanzadeh would have shouting matches over who Joe needed to throw the ball to more.

Huh. Well, Derrick Mason isn't necessary anyway. Per Football Outsiders (new window), writing about Doug Baldwin: "He is a young Derrick Mason, which the league needs, because the old Derrick Mason is all worn out and needs replacing."

6-10? You are delusional. Who else in that division is going to the playoffs?

Things damn well better be different next time! ;) There's no way it's going to be an easy matchup, but now that Ben's hurt his foot the Steelers appear to have figured out how to be good again I think we'll be OK. :)

Maybe the Jets should take whatever crappy draft pick they end up getting for him and draft a better QB. Good god, "game manager" is an insult for a QB and Sanchez isn't even good enough to be called a game manager.
