I live in Vegas. sorry, I don't have a gambling problem. Nor am I Catholic. I can understand, but not forgive, that a weak man, with a lot of other people's money, can f*ck up. It happens mostly to cocktail waitresses and taxi drivers. I would think that a vicar would be held to a higher standard.

BTW, what the hell would he do if his $650 K won? Donate it to charity? Play more? what was he thinking?

GAT_00: I wasn't aware we had socially agreed that a tithe was in fact stealing.

The money is supposed to go towards church maintenance, various social/charity programs and whatever else that particular church runs. (Schools, hospitals, etc.) I believe that the only reason priest are paid is because it would be considered slavery if the church didn't give them something.

So yeah, skimming the cash from the votive candles (which usually just pays for more candles) is pretty bad.

But I'm not surprised that the parishioners feel bad for him-many priest have a problems. I've known a lot of priest who were alcoholics, gamblers, gluttons and skirt chasers. The only thing people don't forgive priest for is the child diddling.

Maybe his gambling was a distraction/diversion from his desire to diddle kids.

Ummm, no. They give priests money because that's how it works. Monks and nuns make no money. Also, Catholic schools charge tuition, and the parish - after they give the bishop his cut - use it for parish expenses only. Parish Councils are on hand to make sure of that.

And many forgive them that, making every excuse imaginable and some you never even thought of, up to and including blaming the children. Because the priest is holy. God's anointed. It's really sickening.

A few years ago, the accountant for the archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland was discovered to have stole over $500,000 to feed into VLTs downtown at bars. The money should have been used to fix the buildings and pay the victims of some of the pedo priests that the archdiocese had been sued about.

You would think so, but it has been my experience that members of the Clergy are just as prone to sinning as everyone else. All that education does not change the basic character.

Other addictions are easy to understand, but gambling's a little harder. Lose money, lose money, lose money, win a little, lose money, win a lot, lose more... I do think it's an addiction I'll never have to worry about, and I wish those trying to get over it the best of luck.

Tuan: People are addicted to calling things addictions.

Gambling addiction has been recognized for decades. Contrary to popular belief, gambling addiction counselling is very strict about making its clients acknowledge the harm they have caused to their loved ones as well as repay debts. Is it so wrong to offer people who engage in self-destructive behavior and want to stop an opportunity for counselling and support?

Simple, he takes up a collection from the faithful until he gets $40k. Then he puts it on 12 at the roulette wheel (12 apostles you know) which is a sure thing.
