"You give me the pictures, I'll give you the war" wasn't a figure of speech.

I'm always skeptical of rabidly biased journalism, in whatever direction.

The question here is why are we focused on pro-Palestinian journalism? It's not like Ha'aretz is "fair and balanced," after all. Trusting the propaganda of an involved party is typically a bad idea - that was, originally, the whole point of having folks like third-party journalists & photojournalists, not to mention folks like UN observers.

Whaaat?

Jews pouting about not being catered to enough again?

Israel: Waaah! they launched missles at us again!
-reality: Palestinian kids threw some rocks.

Can we just nuke that part of the world already?

I didn't take it that way at all. I took it as the journalists staging events for drama only. That wasn't pro anything to me. It was "zomg! riots! look look look! there are even kids in the riots!!! RIOTS!!!!"

what a disgusting video to watch.

Agreed. It's not pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian; it's pro-sensationalism, for the sake of selling photos.

Just prior to the breakout of the Rodney King riot, I left work at the LAFD emergency center below City Hall(software integration project), and walked over to the LA Police HQ (Parker Center IIRC) where a crowd had gathered, along with a variety of news crews.

When, and only when, the TV crews had their lights on, was the crowd in any way disruptive. When the lights were off, it was just people milling around, listening to each other or city/police spokespeople. Lights on: angry mob reactions.

(I left there thinking it was pretty boring, and went for a hike in Griffith Park. An hour or two later at the base of the Hollywood sign I realized the city was on fire.)

So yeah, Heisenburg uncertainty principle writ large. Observer effects the experiment.

It really makes me wonder how much of the Palestinian/Israeli is just because of shiat like this. by no means all of it,but claiming a couple of kids who throw rocks and run off every few days is a massive riot, has to keep the situation inflamed and people on edge. and all so someone can sell a picture.

Annie Leibovitz pulls that shiat all the time. Then she goes and takes a picture of some lilly white newborn in the hands of some dude made up in coal dust and everybody's all "hey it's all good Annie"

WTF Indeed: "You give me the pictures, I'll give you the war" wasn't a figure of speech.

No, it was a line in a movie.

Citizen Kane, to be exact.

Wrong again. The line from Kane is "you provide the prose poems. I'll provide the war". This was supposedly based on something Hearst actually said.

This isn't so much a matter of ZOMG JOURNALIST CONSPIRACY as it may seem. I would be willing to wager a decent chunk that most (if not all) of the photographers you see in his shots are independent freelancers, trying to make a buck and/or a name for themselves. They don't get paid and/or famous unless they get dramatic images, so for a photographer with shiatty ethics it's not a big leap to sex up a boring situation with dramatic but inaccurate photos. These guys would probably be just as happy to manufacture a heart-rending shot of a Jewish settler being evicted as they would one of a teenaged Palestinian rioter.

In a way, think of these guys as the paparazzi of the combat photography world. A paparazzi can make a little bit of money getting a photo of Tom Cruise walking down the street...but if he provokes Tom Cruise into going apeshiat and gets a shot of Tom trying to steal his Nikons, he can make a lot of money. Same principle.

Like Zombie's pictorials about the anti-war marches. How photojournalist used selective cropping to distort what was taking place. When will people realize that journalism is about making money. Period.

Reminds me... I've always looked at that famous Kent state shooting photo of the girl kneeling next to the guy on the ground and though: "this looks staged". Mainly due to the people walking around casually in multiple directions.

That's not the point of the video. The point of the video is that this cozy relationship between journalist and subject is directly influencing the subject's behavior. And in doing so, any "news" is lost. Utterly.

These Palestinian kids learned that if they show up on Friday after prayers and place themselves 1 meter from the east curb of street X that the light will be really good when they toss rocks at hopelessly distant Israeli soldiers.

The story is not "journalists are faking photos!". The story is "journalists are influencing the behavior of their subjects!"

CitizenTed: The story is not "journalists are faking photos!". The story is "journalists are influencing the behavior of their subjects!"

Yeah, but it's a two way street. These "journalists" know that if they show up at Street X after Friday prayers, they'll be able to create dramatic images of "riots" that they can sell to picture agencies back in Europe for $$$. And the "rioters" know that if they show up at Street X after Friday prayers, there will be an accommodating pack of Western photographers more than happy to capture them on film/video for the rest of the world.

My take was that some of the posters in here thought this was some sort of organized thing on the part of journalists to gin up sympathy for the Palestinian cause. My point was that it's not...it's just opportunism.

Sure. Next thing you're gonna tell me is reality shows are staged and pieced together.
