A Dark Evil Omen: GOP wants to exhume body of Francisco Franco in order to move it to different cemetery, stand him for Republican primary.

Younger people may not fully realize that Western Europe up until 1975 still contained the Fascist country Spain - that Fascists (and their variant as Nazis) were not wiped out by WWII.

Republicans in the US such as Pres. Richard Nixon and Republican policy supported the brutal dictator Franco because he would execute communists.

Hopefully to dump it in the landfill. That chucklefark almost killed my girlfriend's grandpa, and by the transitive property, almost killed my girlfriend. They let him escape, only after killing his two best friends, if he "danced like a negro*."

I heard that towards Francisco's last few weeks he was pretty close to death, and on slow news days the news would remark that he was still alive. So when he did finally die it was parodied on SNL that he was in fact still dead, but what made it funny was that once you're dead, you stay dead, and that an update was completely useless/unnecessary. What a hoot.

"But, in what promises to be a long drawn out battle, the family of Franco and the Association for the Defence of El Valle de los Caidos, have vowed to block the plans and even threatened legal action"

Why be so willfully ignorant/uncaring about the kind of ruler he was?

You mean to be sarcastic, but what made the Spanish announcements funnier still was that, according to sources, Franco WAS dead for at least part of the time they were busy announcing he wasn't quite dead yet; but in an effort to keep the government running smoothly and the people from rioting, Franco's inner circle delayed announcing his actual death date until they had the power transition all worked out.

So a news report announcing he was still dead was kind of reassuring, in a way.

I went there several years ago. It was quiet and uncrowded, so my (then) 13-year-old daughter and I did a little pogo dance on the floor covering Franco's crypt.

She didn't really get the significance at the time, but she thanked me a few years ago. I mean, where else can you literally dance on the grave of a serious dictator?

It's actually one of those contraversies that is always just under the skin here. I will say that seeing the massive cross and the cathedral is one of the creepiest things around here. Knowing that there are tens of thousands of people buried right there doesn't really help that sentiment either. It's also constantly there for anyone leaving Madrid to the NW because it is really clearly visible from the motorway.

If any of you get a chance, though...Valle de los Caídos is definitely worth the trip however somber it may be.

Pretty much THIS.

Besides Nixon had to open relations with the Chinese who had starved, killed a signifcant part of their population with their great leap forward. You have to deal with whats there.

Communsts, Anarchists, Fascists and their neo-XXXist ilk and allies can be locked away in the desert somewhere and be allowed to kill each other to their hearts content. The world would be a better place.

Anarchists aren't organized enough to have pogroms and genocides. Get enough of them together in a room and they just start making snide comments to each other. Eventually they end up with competing slogans and silly grudges that they hold onto for years and years.
