I bottled a pumpkin ale today and one yesterday. I have never had a commercial one. I should pick some up to see what I am striving for.

"I hate pumpkin beers," wrote my friend and Washington City Paper beer writer Orr Stuhl. "Even picking a 'favorite' -- say, Dogfish Head's -- is like picking a favorite airborne illness."

Sing it.

This. All of it. I like beer. I like unusual beer. I like spiced beer. But I've never met a pumpkin beer that didn't taste like a good beer someone dumped a bunch of bad stuff into.

Southern Tier Pumpking is farking fantastic.

If you love beer you probably hate pumpkin ale.

Fortunately some good german oktoberfests are still on the tap at my pub.

That. shiat is nasty.

I have never heard of pumpkin ale until now, but I cannot imagine that it would be in any way good.

I like pumpkin, I like ale; but I have a feeling that combining the two leads to a very bad end.

Pumkin Ale? Is that on the aisle next to the hopin' gator?

Shipyard is solid, but when I can, I LOVE Southampton Publick House's (Southampton, NY) Pumpkin Ale. Got hooked on the stuff in college, and buy up as much of it as I can find up in MA.

Buffalo Bill's pumpkin ale is decent. Not great, but good.

I'll stick to my Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Wild Ale.

I don't dig on fruit beers typically but I can enjoy a good pumpkin beer. But my quota is about two per year; even a six-pack is just too much.

The best I've had are Schlafly, DFH, and Southern Tier.

I like to buy a 6 pack of a pumpkin ale for thanksgiving, one is fun to drink, then inflicting the other five on people is equally enjoyable.

I'm not sure that "beer snob" and "pumpkin ale" belong in the same sentence except to say that beer snobs do not drink them

It cracks me up when people gripe about beer snobs. If you're really happy with your MGD why does it bother you to hear someone deride it?

2011-10-11 10:11:28 PM
Southern Tier's Pumking is the only one I can really say I like. Rich, spicy, autumnal flavor that knocks you out.

2011-10-11 10:11:31 PM
There are two varieties of pumpkin beer: pumpkin beer that is simply made from pumpkin, and pumpkin beer that is loaded with pumpkin pie spices.

The former can be pretty good; the latter basically tastes like someone who doesn't like beer, made some beer.

2011-10-11 10:12:23 PM
Some pumpkin ales I can't stand, and others I LOVE. Since its only brewed for such a relatively short period every year, I can see why breweries end up with the wide varieties that they do. So far, Fegley's Brew Works in Allentown PA makes my favorite. My 1st attempt at making one goes into the keg as soon as I empty one, which hopefully will be this weekend.

Pretty much. Pumpkin Ale is as American as Apple Pie. It's been a preferred brewed since there was brewing in the colonies.

Now a days most of it tastes like pumpkin pie ale, but you can still find a few that are just pumpkin.

I use untappd to keep track.

2011-10-11 10:14:54 PM
I like pumpkin ales, and pumpkin breads, and pumpkin spice coffee (screw lattes).

With ales though, it's weird. The memory of the taste is always better than the taste itself.

I would love to try a pumpkin stout. Never seen one though.

That author's an idiot. Southern Tier Pumpking isn't sugary at all, and is the best pumpkin ale EVER. And anyone who disagrees with me can go suck on a Bud Light.

Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale is a fine beer. Blue Moon is at least my third favorite craft beer however due to low selection.

Besides, we should be debating Oktoberfest beers, in which case Leinenkugel would win hands down. For one they don't make a style of beer that I don't like, secondly, the family name is Lein-en-kugel you don't get more German than that

St Arnold's, out of Houston, is releasing Pumpkinator this week, an imperial stout with pumpkin and spice. Bonus: 10% ABV

I don't know about their Oktoberfest, but Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat is hands down the worst beer I've ever had. Tastes like rancid Fruity Pebbles.

Shipyard Pumpkinhead is delicious. My favorite way to drink it is on a cool fall day, take a pint glass, and wet the rim. Then put cinnamon and sugar on a small plate, and rub the rim to coat it with the mix. Then add beer, and then anything is possible.

Yes there are a lot of unintentional innuendos in there, deal with it.

Why do all the top beers on the beer ratings sites taste like ass?
They're usually sweet, super-high alcohol brews and it's difficult to get through more than half a bottle of them.

I've had both and they both taste like shiat.

Water. Barley. Hops. Yeast.

Don't fark with it.
