Cardinals' changes at quarterback and defensive coordinator are not paying off to this point. (Sando)

1) the O-Line blows. Whatever down and distance are on passing downs for the Redbirds, add another 6-8 yards to it due to Kolb having to drop back to evade the pass rush. plays designed to gain 10 yards become, if completed, 2 yards. farking O-Line has roller skates on.

2) Ray Horton. Whiz, dammit, you've burned through 3 DCs in 4 years, and the defense is getting worse with essentially the same core personnel (i know DRC is gone, Calvin Pace left, perhaps a few others but the core is the same). Maybe YOU are the problem. I know players gotta make plays but the scheme is the problem. Sunday's game, Donovan would run for 15 yards due to the defense beign stacked at the second level Next play, youd crowd the box. Boom, Donovan throws to a wide open reciever in the empty second level. You pullt he players back. Boom, AP runs 8 yards before anyone even touches him. wash rinse repeat.

i mean, jeez, Cam Newton, Tarvaris Jackson, Rex Grossman, Donovan McNabb, these are a rookies, retreads and / or journeymen and we're just hemorrhaging yards. Come on man.

i mean, the math is somewhat metaphorical, but my point is that Kolb is having to drop so far the fark back, way further than he's supposed to. and then he has to scramble so every other pass play turns into a farking hell jailbreak where he's just forced to freestyle it.

and sunday, granted the TD would have been meaningless, but he had the TE WIIIIIIIIIIIIDE open over the middle, in the endzone. Kolb fired this rail gun pass like he hated dude's fingers.

all he had to do was just a little 15-20 yard lob pass, but he threw a freaking 98MPH fastball. 0 points.

It's hard to explain, but QB Ben Roethlisberger (five passing TDs) often plays better when hurting. (Walker)

Ha... someone said that exact thing in yesterday's thread after I made a comment questioning Cutler's toughness which I now retract considering he played extremely well for a guy who had a pocket the size of a Barbie Dream House Garage*.

Steelers defense needs to start creating turnover, though. No fumbles and one pick through five weeks, is it?

*since apparently now we're using "number of cars that would fit in a garage" as a unit of measure for player potency

Saints/Pats switched. So what if the Saints game was close... they proved once again that they can charge in the final minutes of a game to win. That's pretty damn important.

it was funny how after week 1 or 2, the Pats beat Miami, who missed the playoffs last year and went like, 6-10, and even then it was like, a 28-20 game, and the Pats were still ranked higher than I think the Ravens, when all they did was absoltuely crush the Steelers. WHO PLAYED IN THE SUPER BOWL SEVEN MONTHS EARLIER.

Yeah, that made sense, ESPN.

No, no, on the one hand, the Panthers are much better than their record says and Cam's unbelievable. On the other, the Panthers are 1-4 and the Jets are 2-3, so the Saints had a waaaaaay easier matchup, so...hey, like Clayton had an issue pretending both of those thoughts can be maintained at the same time.

Bryan Billick's Foxsports power ranknigs, he had the Jets moving up after a loss. he says something like "yeah, i moved them after they lost, but hye, it was the Pats after all, and their offense [Jets] showed signs of life twoards the end".

no no no no no no no no.

I wouldn't rank the Pats in the top 5 until they demonstrate they know how to play defense. Holding the horribly anemic Jets to 21 points is not convincing.

Welcome to the first 6 years of Alex Smith.

Now I'm not saying Alex Smith is great, but it's amazing that it's taken 7 years to get him even the slightest bit of pass protection. And hey, turns out that when he gets time to step into his throws, he's alright! Like most QBs.

Look at who they've beaten.

I do think they're a good team, but right now their only solid win was against KC and now Chicago. Everything else was close up until the last moment.

I don't understand how the Pats went up over the Saints. Maybe I"m just a homer but the Saints haven't really played a bad game of football this year yet. The Pats had a soso game last week just like the Saints, but their lose was a horrible game of football against the Bills while Saints lost a close game to the Packers.

How? Dallas has only scored 30 points once. The Patriots have scored at least 30 in every game, and Dallas' defense isn't as good as Oakland or New York.

I would like to contend that the Panthers are a better 1-4 team than the Eagles are.

so i'm near Detroit (Ann Arbor), and i like the Lions, but i don't see anything wrong with the top end of these rankings. who among us really feels like the Lions would beat the Pats tomorrow? i don't. i think the Patriots would open a huge lead in the first half, then at least keep up after half time and beat the Lions by double digits. the Lions probably wouldn't beat the Packers or the Saints, either (but maybe the Saints). and isn't that the point of such a ranking? to try and anticipate who would beat who? it shouldn't just be a list of 5 win teams, then 4 win teams, then 3 win teams, etc. i can do that shiat myself.

AP and Beanie both have 6. Cam, along with Law Firm, Fred Jackson, and LeSean McCoy, has 5. Two tied at first, four tied at 2nd.

Eli Manning had been so steady, with just two interceptions in four games, and then he threw three in a meltdown against Seattle. (Fox)

That's not exactly fair. One was on a pass where the receiver slipped and fell, tipping the ball into a defender's hands; another was in desperation/garbage time.

Still, there do seem to be a number of apologists willing to discount those two interceptions and take his 420 yards and 3 TDs at face value, which also isn't fair. If the INTs were improbable, then so were about 100 of the yards on two insane catches; and another 30 or so came in the aforementioned garbage time. On balance he had a very solid, but not great, game that the team would have won if it had any semblance of a running game.

I mean, the play sequence speaks for itself: most teams, when they get to the opponent's 10 with under 2 minutes remaining and a 5-point deficit, pound it in and kill the clock. The Giants couldn't because their running game sucked, and that's how the INT happened.

I know it was preseason and all (but at least week 3), but the Lions D-line beat the crap out of NE. With the exception of GB, I would give the Lions the best chance of anyone in the league to beat the Patriots, and I'm a Bills fan.
