Sweet.

Looks good and I'm not really a comic fan. I like what appears to be a homage to ID4 at the beginning.

I suspect those two are more necessary than even Iron Man I & II or the Hulks for understanding the storyline they're going with in Avengers. I'd say more but I don't want to spoil anything for you.

What grinds my gears is that it COULD have been a great movie. They just forgot to effectively develop Loki as a villain.

Though I wouldn't recommend it, one could actually skip IM, IM2 and TIH, of all you were
interested in was piecing together the plot, since you really only get the sense that there
is a plot starting with THOR (and it really takes shape in CAP).

Know how I know you've never read any Avengers comics? Loki is a god. Not only is he a god, he's the god of mischief and a cosmic level magician.

Between Thor, Iron Man, Cap and Hulk....it boils down to Thor and Hulk. And whether this Thor has the intelligence to wear Hulk out till he calms down or if Thor keeps pissing Hulk off and gets his ass handed to him. Since they're going with young, brash Thor, I'd give it to Hulk.

Iron Man is basically the Batman of Marvel. If he has time to prepare, smart money's always on him. Otherwise it's Thor (Hulk eventually tires out and deHulks and Thor pounds puny Bruce into the pavement with Mjolnir).

Isn't Hulk considered the most powerful character in the Marvel universe short of omnipotent beings? I remember reading his strength and resistance to harm technically has no limits if you get him angry enough.

Depends on which version you're dealing with. Various writers have buffed and debuffed him as they saw fit. There are nearly indestructible versions of the Hulk and there are versions that are slightly more powerful than the Thing.

Like someone mentioned above, depends on the writer. He could punch Galactus in the face or crack a planet in half at his strongest. There was a series, I can't remember if it was in an Incredible Hulk or some special comic where it was said that Hulk was an Avatar. He represented Rage. Like Juggernaut is the Unstoppable Force, like Pheonix is rebirth.

So much looking forward to this coming out; my wife and I ended up getting cast as extras for the Cleveland shoot, and I ended up getting an upgrade when I asked one of the PAs if they needed any extra safeties for the stunt crew. Since I mainly work in live theatre, working on a A-class film production was a LOT of fun.

...stupid NDAs. I wanna share.

I don't know. I kinda thought she'd be the weak link in Iron Man 2, but I was pleasantly impressed with the character (and not just from an aesthetic viewpoint). In fact, that was one of the most unexpected things about Iron Man 2 for me. It seemed like they utilized Scarlett Johansson surprisingly well and Mickey Rourke surprisingly poorly.

That was...actually brought up during pre-filming prep by one of the "extras wranglers", and definitely confirmed when talking to the stunt guys. Luckily, my wife was on the day shooting in the street (where you see all the cars getting blown up and the military shooting back at the start of the trailer), and I was on the night shoot in [redacted] (where you see the "Polizei" car get flipped over after Sam Jackson shoots the RPG in the trailer), I could stare with impunity.

Well...glance, and look away. Glance and look away. Those things are like the sun, you know. Stare too long, and you'll get burned.

Jokes aside, she stayed in her trailer most of the time, and I don't blame her. By the third night of shooting, having to walk the paparazzi gauntlet was getting old for us. For her? It'd be a nightmare.

2011-10-11 01:28:12 PM
Captain America was a disappointment. Half the movie was Captain being boring and not doing anything. Then there was some over the top action scenes. Then a really stupid ending. All of that would have been fine if the enemy was actually someone we cared about. Red Skull never seemed threatening and was never a foil to Captain. It seems like he was just put in and hoped everyone watching would know he was a big bad guy we should care about.

The ending would have been better if the romance between Captain and Peggy meant something. But it just felt flat and Captain not being able to return to her just didn't have the emotional weight the movie seemed to want.

Avengers looks like a fun movie though if they avoid the failings of Captain America.

I guess I like it that they didn't spell out the threat too directly yet. Loki.. and a War of the Worlds invasion? (Skrull, I guess, but that's only from what I hear on Fark)

Black Widow's short hair does make more sense for fighting.. less to grab for an enemy. And looks terrific.

More likely that isn't Cap ... its a Skrull desguised as Cap.

C'mon, FARK, 99% of the internet has basically speculated for months that Loki is working with the Skrulls in this movie. All those on set shots of Cap fighting guys in mo-cap suits holding huge Jack Kirby-esque space guns were floating around the web for over a month. Quite frankly, I'd be shocked if it wasn't Skrulls.

Dude, anything is better than Catwoman, k? So Thor and Cap automatically get a pass.

Hell, most of Marvel's movies get a pass in my book, and only because they seem to make the effort for you to care about the characters.

DC? Other than Nolan's Batman, it's been epic fail after epic fail.

Ahhh you're right, I must've closed it after the Avengers insignia came up (should've figured they'd have something afterward, like every movie). That's good at least. I would've been worried if they were scared to show CG hulk, since a lot of people thought they looked cartoony in the previous movies (not me, I thought Norton's Hulk looked badass, best CG adaptation so far).

DC seems to put more care into its animated features than live action. DCAU films are usually quality and usually better than the Marvel equivalent (there are exceptions - The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is pretty entertaining)

I live in ABQ and all of these actors were here over the summer. That includes Scarlett. They all lived in same part of town too. I could always tell where Downy was as the closer my proximity to him, the more like a complete loser I felt. The blast zone for his cool covered most of the city out into the west valley.

2011-10-11 02:05:11 PM
I haven't been following too closely with released information on this, but I'd been hoping that since the Cosmic Cube was the MacGuffin for this one that Thanos might be the archvillain for this one.

Also, imho, one of the sad parts about Captain America is that as time goes on and Cap gets reinvented, it just becomes more and more implausible to have him run into folks from his days in the war. Back in the 80's and 90's, he could run into folks that were 20-30 years old during WWII and they'd be old, but it wouldn't be too implausible for them to still be alive. Now anyone he'd run into would be in their mid-eighties or nineties assuming they were in their twenties during WWII, so he gets more and more alienated as time goes on.

Was that Loki doing the voiceover at the beginning? I couldn't really tell.

And yeah, I have a hard time seeing Loki carry an entire film. Then again, with 6 Avengers already sharing screen time, I'm not sure how you squeeze in more bad guys unless this is going to be 3+ hours.

Oh!

Hello!

Let me pull up a chair and we'll talk.

There we go.

I'd like to talk about music in films, if I may.

We've all just watched the trailer to the Avengers, a superhero movie. Now, one notable aspect of the entire superhero genre is the theme of finding the courage to stand up and fight against evil despite the usually overwhelming odds. The key word there is courage.

Appropriately, any trailer for a movie of this genre should communicate a sense of boldness and courage, and the best way of doing so is through the use of music. This is why so many movies and their trailers use soul-stirring orchestral themes - they get the blood thumping and get the viewer excited to see the protagonist do what they do best.

On the flip side, what they should stay from is whiney cock-rock that sounds like somebody crying that will sound horribly dated in a few scant months.

Thanks for your time! I'll see myself out.

2011-10-11 02:39:32 PM
Well DC, it'll be 7 - 10 years before you can get a good Justice League movie off the ground and now the bars been set pretty high.

I'm not going to be some stereotypical nerd who'll rage against the previous movies (like SOME on here ~NERDS!), I enjoyed them. Cap more than Thor and Iron Man more than Cap, but for this...
THIS...

FARK YA!

I haven't stood in line for a movie since Phantom Menace, but I'll be waiting for this one.

*raises hand*

But professor, what about whiney cock-rock that already sounds dated and trite? Won't people think you're just reusing music from the 1998 Godzilla movie, thereby tainting your movie as a cheap money grab with no soul?

Ha!

*Pinches cheek*

Adorable!

*Sigh* Ah, but no.

If you take quick look back at my comment - indeed, even that part you yourself quoted, you will see that I was commenting on the music used in the trailer. This trailer. The Avengers trailer. The one... we all just watched? Yes? You remember that? With the music?

While it is indeed true and well known that the score for the movie is one of the last things produced for the film I suspect it's a safe bet that the score for the trailer has been produced by the time you.... hear it...

A trailer is used to bring the audiences to the movie itself. It does that by conveying a feel for the movie in question. So even though the score for the finished product may indeed still be a work in progress, the score for the trailer should give the viewer some idea of what's in store for them. Which brings me back to my previous comment re: whiny cock-rock.

But thanks for your input! Two thumbs up big guy!

I thought it was well known what the plot for the avengers movie is. At first Loki Tricks Thor into fighting the Hulk. The rest of the avengers help stop that fight and Banner is able to control the Hulk through Stark tech. Then Loki and the Skrull's invade the earth and the Avengers are assembled to face this new threat.

Also, I don't understand all of the hate for the Thor movie, I thought it was really entertaining and well worth the money.

It wasn't bad. It wasn't spectacular, some of the scenes dragged, too many characters were introduced, etc. Standard complaints for this sort of thing, really. The direction, from top to bottom, was excellent on the other hand. The characters felt believable, and the action managed to feel more comic-book than any other "comic book" movie without coming off as silly.

PMG: A trailer is used to bring the audiences to the movie itself. It does that by conveying a feel for the movie in question.

Cause, yeah, a song with the refrain "We're in this together now" has nothing to do with a crew of people used to working solo learning to be a team...

Whattya want? Them to re-use Carmina Burana for the billionth time? Or recycle the score to Stargate or ID4 a few more times? Maybe Orff's The Planets, and get confused with Williams' score for Star Wars?

It's too expensive to orchestrate, record, and produce a score for a trailer, so they use music from the radio. It's simple, cheap, and effective.

Now -1/10, and still for stupidity.

But it's better than the music for the cartoon intro. To some people at least. Me, I'm enjoying the music for both.

//It was on IFC this morning.

That was actually a stock track by DeWolfe music, since they didn't have the budget to get a composer. You used to be able to buy it for your own use, but it's no longer available - I'm thinking the remaining Pythons finally sewed up the rights.

I thought it was a popular and well known fact that it's Loki and the Skrulls as the villains.

I've also heard the possibility that they're technically not Skrulls, but members of Thanos's army. Loki approaches Thanos, saying "Hey, if you give me an army to find a cosmic cube, I'll help you get the infinity gauntlet", giving Thanos a lead-in for Avengers 2.

Could be good or it could suck. "The Expendables" looked like it would be awesome but it just didn't work. Fast Five looked retarded and it turned out to be the best action movie in a long time. I'm not a huge fan of comic book movies, so if anything, at least they're keeping all this crap contained to one film. Just my impression. I'm sitting there ALL the way in the back on a particular crowd scene, while he's been walking through the crowd. We get to the end of the shot and he has to hold position while he's right next to me. It's taking a really long time because the next shot is this bizarre receding crane shot; like "45 minutes standing and kneeling in the same place"long. So he and the assistant DP and I start up a conversation about weird crap we've seen on sets. 5 minutes into the conversation and it's not like "here's an extra, the ADP, and the talent standing around", it was like sitting around a pub table sharing "no shiat, there I was" stories.

He was just cool about it. Not to mention he was a gentleman about repeatedly driving his crotch into a kneeling woman's face at the end of the previous shot (which was out of frame - it was just the way he ended up hitting his mark walking through a kneeling crowd). ;)

It's a stupid rule sometimes. For example, if, say, Mr. Hyde intends to detonate fuel tankers in the NYC harbor and cause a firestorm that might destroy the city, and you have to kill him to stop him, would you not just pokerize the mofo right there and wash your hands of it? It makes no sense to have this as a hard and fast rule.

Raug the Dwarf: unicron702:

Isn't Hulk considered the most powerful character in the Marvel universe short of omnipotent beings? I remember reading his strength and resistance to harm technically has no limits if you get him angry enough.

Whether that's canon or not, I'm not sure. But He is one of the strongest in the MU, yeah.

I think its interesting how little Kat Dennings's considerable...assets are exploited in most of her roles. They don't put her in tight fitting shirts or low-cut anything or bikinis much.

Apparently, you are unaware that the score is one of the *last* things produced for a film.

Either that, or you're trolling.

Either way, 1/10 for stupidity...

The fact that you described NIN as cock-rock totally invalidates anything you say about this subject

PMG: Oh!

You are an asshole. Preference for music not withstanding, comparing The Fragile to "cock rock" and claiming that it will be dated in "a few months" when it is already over a decade old, just shows that you're also retarded.

Not really. I did say I would rent it. Problem is I've seen enough stories about guys who put on costumes and fight other guys in costumes. my movie prediction is that loki steals the cosmic cube, brings back the Destroyer (or even cooler Surtur) to earth, skrulls reveal themselves in a separate storyline and are backed by some assistance from a Hydra resurgence, and the cosmic cube once returned from Loki's defeat reveals that Thanos is behind all of this chaos and mayhem (to be battled in Avengers 2). as a last ditch effort, Hulk gets dropped like a NFO onto a mob of Frost Giants, Hydra, and Skrull, mopping them up and, after they are taken care of, becomes the larger more worrisome threat to contain than any of the villains. (they should totally use Hulk like this--straight out of The Ultimates.)

and Squirrel Girl makes a cameo as a reject during the gathering of the Avengers.

Imagine if you will: A Cobie - Scarlett Lesbian scene...

No Hank and no Janet, which means without wasp joss is gonna have to kill off black widow. In fact a surprising lack of whedon regulars, TONS of rumors, like the above, and nathan fillion as hank, and felicia day as agent brand, which is uber plausible since whedon created that character. But everything like that has been denied or proven false so far.

Still looks promising though.

If you are a Morena fan, you may want to check out Homeland ion Showtime. It's a great show, with a great cast.

Nah, Black Widow still has potential for her own movie if Avengers does well. Keep in mind we've got another prominent female in SHIELD for this movie:

I'm willing to bet she's the one who's going to bite it.

I don't see Maria Hill getting her own movie. She's still fairly new and those that knew her in the beginning despised her.

Some farking epic Cap issues right there. John Byrne art. Josef Rubinstein inking. The whole "Captain America For President" thing. Too bad they only stuck around for about 9 issues.

As for the trailer, the Hulk already looks better than any of the other two movies. Actually looks like Ruffalo.

[cache.gawker.com image 640x360]

They're actually letting Ruffalo play him as a motion capture, like Gollum. I saw that in IMDB trivia this afternoon. Still letting Lou Ferigno do the voice.

Iron Man is basically the Batman of Marvel. If he has time to prepare, smart money's always on him. Otherwise it's Thor (Hulk eventually tires out and deHulks and Thor pounds puny Bruce into the pavement with Mjolnir).

Uh.... excuse me?

Captain America always wins.

Always wins.

The whole "Whedon only hire his regulars" thing is a myth. Look at Firefly, not a single regular had worked with him before, except Summer Glau who had a single walk on part with two lines in one episode of Angel. Then when he made Dollhouse again he did not hire anyone he had worked with before as a regular, though he used a few in some recurring roles.
Even Dr Horrible, which he made with his own money by calling in favors, only had two out of the four main cast people who'd worked with him before.

So why was anyone expecting The Avengers to be wall to wall Whedon regulars?

I don't care if you are trolling or not, but seriously. Shut the fark up - Firefly is NOT, NOT, NOT coming back. As a live action property, it is dead, buried and gone. The cast has moved on, Joss has moved on. It is gone and never will live again.

Pretty much this. In addition, I will say that the comics are all pretty decent and worth a read, especially The Shepherd's Tale. I love the structure of that one, and how it gives you an actual perspective on how long the War went on. Plus, the details on how Book came to be, and some details that would have been nice to explore (Won't spoil them, so you can keep an eye out for them.)...generally, just a mighty fine read.

M Bison: Alphax: Mr. Cat Poop: M Bison: Loki will have an army of aliens at his back. This will be an alien invasion movie.

Would it still technically be an alien invasion movie if it was just Loki? I mean, he's not an Earthling, but can one person be an invasion and are gods considered aliens?

Well, I guess Thor was an alien invasion movie as well, when The Destroyer showed up.

No, what I am saying is that Loki is leading an alien army. Its not just Loki that is the villain. Its either the Skrulls or the Chitauri.

Yeah, I got that. I was just waxing philosophical about how many non-Earth beings it would take to comprise an invasion. I think if it's powerful enough then it would only take one. Just nerd-talkin'.

Not wall to wall, but we were expecting a few.

And Nathan Fillion was on buffy before firefly, gina tores on angel i think before firefly, and adam baldwin right after, eliza dushku was a regular on 2 (3?) seasons of buffy before dollhouse... amy acker and alexis denishof were both semi-regulars on dollhouse, summer glau too at the end, and alan tudyk.

Don't know my comics very well but isn't Black Widow the female equivalent to Batman? No special powers other than a world class fighter with lots of gadgets and intelligence?
Thor could smack her upside the head with his hammer and have his way with her.
Now that's a movie I want to see!!

Nathan was on Buffy only after Firefly was cancelled, ditto Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin on Angel. Eliza Dushku was recurring on Buffy and Angel, but Joss didn't hire her for Dollhouse, it was her deal with Fox first, then she got Joss on board. And Glau and Denisof were both guest stars at the very end, Summer first appearing well after the show was announced cancelled.

Point was, both TV shows he created after Buffy/Angel he almost totally hired all new cast, not people he had worked with before.

Yet this myth of "He always hire the same people again and again...." still persists.

In fact Whedon does that arguably less often than many. Woody Allen hired actors again and again, ditto Tarantino. Even James Cameron. There's nothing wrong with it if they are right for the part. Yet again and again with Whedon it's said like it's a bad thing.

/And don't get me started on the "He only hires tiny waif like girls" myth. His first Willow was a very large girl, he told Jewel Staite to put on weight for Kaylee, Amber Benson and Miracle Laurie are, by Hollywood standards, large girls and Gina Torres is far from waifish.

I screwed myself since I didn't see the movie before I watched the Conan O'Brien clips where they dubbed Thor's voice from the trailer with a whiny, effeminate gay man. Every time he swung the hammer I heard "Take that, biatch!" in my mind.

Could just be that you put enough protagonist together, realistically they are going to start butting heads.

but there are a dozen reasons, Skrull Cap, Skrull Thor, Loki posses cap, loki posses Thor, misunderstanding, Alpha male postering, some kind of disagreement, Thor or Cap being confused when Thor returns to Earth, Or just the typical fight then team up cliche.

FightDirector: Eustacia Vye: FightDirector:
//Tom Hiddleston (Loki) is a bro

I know it's way late for a follow up on this, but I am so curious! Gimme a story about Tom Hiddleston being a bro, pretty please?

Not to mention he was a gentleman about repeatedly driving his crotch into a kneeling woman's face at the end of the previous shot (which was out of frame - it was just the way he ended up hitting his mark walking through a kneeling crowd). ;)

Thank you! I didn't know if you meant good bro or like an annoying bro who would pop his collar if he wasn't wearing armor. Love it.

kalysto727: I haven't been following too closely with released information on this, but I'd been hoping that since the Cosmic Cube was the MacGuffin for this one that Thanos might be the archvillain for this one.

Not to possibly spoilerize, but I've heard that SHIELD's fiddling around with the cube (because of Loki's meddling) has caught the attention of The Skrulls, who want it for themselves as a weapon against the Kree.

ActionJoe: Captain America was a disappointment.

The thing that bothers me, as a mid-80's through early 90's comic book nerd, is why does Cap have a machine gun? In WWII, sure, with the Howling Commandos, sure, but not in the Avengers. Just don't happen.
