Iran: A good reminder why theocracy is not OK.

Theocracy is a distraction. The problem is a regime that punishes simple dissent. It happens to be highly religious. You could get worse than lashes for defying Saddam Hussein who was no theocrat. Or pick any number of rulers from history.

They don't do all the lashes at once. Usually it's broken up over a period of time.

It also depends on the instrument used as to how much damage you're going to get. There are various whip designs, metal cable, etc.

Nice try, but all you've done is proven that moonbat cults are moonbat cults, whenever they are located. If that guy actually allows himself to be lashed, it's his own doing.

Actually, the link the troll listed specifically did say the singer being "punished for his sins" accepted the tribunal and the punishment. Ergo, it's not a judicial matter at all....nothing more or less than Catholics going in and agreeing to say their 10 Hail Marys, or whatever it is they do these days....

Of course, VOLUNTARY mortification of the flesh to deal with spiritual matters is very old and in many, many religions. The problem here is when it's state-compulsory and against the person's will.

/So, in other words, yeah, state theocracy=bad.

I know far more about this than I should but, Naval lashes of the "white jacket" era are not equivalent to Islamic judicial lashes. Lashes from an Islamic court are done on the clothed back, with a thin cane by a man who has to keep a Koran under his whipping arm. They are more about humiliation than pain

That's about right. Just because 10% of the population is Coptic, doesn't mean they have an easy time. The reality is the previous government was doing everything possible to fark them over. Unfortunately, it looks like the new government isn't going to be any different.

Need an example? Fine. Young Coptic girls (teenagers) were being kidnapped, forcibly converted, and married off to old Muslim guys. In Egypt, all religious matters are handled by a religious court (completely Muslim). These cases are considered religious, ergo they are handled by the religious court. Can you guess how this court has ruled every single farking time?

How about another. All repairs to buildings require a permit. Guess how often a permit is issued to repair a Coptic Church? Did you guess "never"? Typically a blind eye is turned when an average person (Muslim) does basic building maintenance. That's not the case with the churches. The result is most Coptic owned buildings are falling apart.

There's a dumbass like you in maybe 30% of the threads here on Fark. You read an article that mentions nothing about religion, so you assume it is your responsibility to make some innocent remark about religion in the thread, in the hopes that someone bites. Of course, someone does respond to your context-less comment, and the situation quickly snowballs into your concluding argument "BLARGH RELIGION IS FOR IDIOTS ATHEISTS RULE" which was the only reason you entered the thread in the first place.

So, let's just get this over with:

BLARGH RELIGION IS FOR IDIOTS ATHEISTS RULE!!1!!

Now you can STFU/GBTM knowing that you have achieved your goal. Golf clap, sir.

Actually they do it in batches. If you're in jail for a year they do something like 15 every two months, something like that.

The reason they do it that way is that after 30 lashes or so there's no skin left on your back so the other 60 would be useless. Also they want you to have something regular to look forward to during your stay.

Nope, see above.

Reading some other stories I guess it depends on the country (maybe even the region). If it's jail and lashings they do it in batches.

Maybe if it's "only lashings" they do it all at once but 90 lashes is pretty much a death sentence unless you can afford plenty of fancy hospital treatment afterwards.

Lashes from an Islamic court are done on the clothed back, with a thin cane by a man who has to keep a Koran under his whipping arm. They are more about humiliation than pain

Some people (you) don't really want to learn that the people they defend are farking barbarians.

Did I say that they aren't? Of course they are farking barbarians, they WHIP people as part of a judicial punishment. That disgusts me on about 15 different levels. But, as a matter of technical information
this is what someone who's just gotten 75 lashes from an Iranian Court looks like:
www.rahana.org

Awful, disgusting, and almost certainly painful, but nothing compared to the old British Naval Cat'o nine lashing 75 stokes of which would be fatal from the loss of blood it inflicted. Which is all I farking said

onlyfro: WorldCitizen: Iran: A good reminder why theocracy is not OK.

Religion does not equal theocracy. Calm the hell down before you blow a vein in your head.

We need a reminder?!?

Apparently you haven't been paying attention to exactly who the Republican party has been parading around as candidates at just about every level of government the past dozen years or so.

Fundamentalism, no matter the flavor, is barbaric and unenlightened.

Muslim fundamentalists take their barbarism to an extreme and intolerable level.

Time for you Islamic apologists to step up to the plate and curb your out of control brethren.

Each country has it's own rules. Who are we to say Iran is wrong to punish because someone doesn't follow their rules.

That being said, I think the punishment is too much (and I'll never go to Iran).

My issue with this and willfullyobscure's link is they are trying to whip the sin out of you. It doesn't work that way dude.

Wait a sec. Farkers swore up and down the Muslim Spring would bring hope 'n change and that the Muslim Brotherhood was not a hard line religious terrorist group.

you mean I shouldn't have believed 'em?

Wow, you really weren't paying attention, were you?

/Iran wasn't part of the Muslim Spring
//they had their revolution summer 2010
///and were brutally shut down by the powers in charge
