Color me shocked.

2011-10-07 09:41:12 AM
Let's see.

They focus on how Obama wanted to pay for the bill, not the bill it self.

Then they answered a hypothetical question.

Then they answer the question using only federal income tax, ignoring payroll tax because it'll give the answer Obama said.

And then they agree with Obama, but call him and past administrations out for not doing more about China in the past.

Once again AP doesn't seem to understand 'fact' checking. This was vague facts taken from the speech and then they gave their opinions on it.

2011-10-07 09:41:33 AM
That's a pretty piss poor "fact check". Just look at what "facts" they are checking:

1) "If it turns out that there are Republicans who are opposed to this bill, they need to explain to me, but more importantly to their constituencies and the American people, why they're opposed, and what would they do."

This isn't even a fact. It's a question.

2) "Every idea that we've put forward are ones that traditionally have been supported by Democrats and Republicans alike."

APs response: "Republicans support nothing Obama does, this makes him a liar".

3) "The answer we're getting right now is: Well, we're going to roll back all these Obama regulations... Does anybody really think that that is going to create jobs right now and meet the challenges of a global economy?"

Again, not a fact. APS response: "Yes, some people do. Liar!"

5) "China has been very aggressive in gaming the trading system to its advantage and to the disadvantage of other countries, particularly the United States. .... And currency manipulation is one example of it, or at least intervening in the currency markets in ways that have led their currency to be valued lower than the market would normally dictate. And that makes their exports cheaper and that makes our exports to them more expensive."

APs response: "True, but you arent doing anything about it, so LIAR!"

Are President Barack Obama's ideas for job creation really bipartisan as he claims? Not when the means for paying for them are put in the equation.

I didn't read the article but let me take a wild guess to summarize it anyways:

Obama said his job creation plan was bipartisan because the GOP agrees to some parts of it and the Democrats agree to some parts of it.

This factcheck says Obama's job creation plan was not bipartisan because the number of things the GOP disagrees with is non-zero.

Therefore, this fact check thinks the only way you can pass something bipartisan is for everyone to agree on everything. This seems reasonable, the way this country was intended to be run. If one person disagrees with a single word, scrap that partisan hackery entirely.

Yeah, we should totes suck $500 billion out of the economy immediately. That'll kick-start employment.

F*cking Keynesian economics. How does it work?

Fact checks are a lot less fact-y these days.

That's something that you'd choose to "fact check'? farking horrible.

Is this like a real Fact check or an editorial framed as a fact check where they try to fact check statements that cannot be checked against facts.

FTA: In 2009, 1,470 households filed tax returns with incomes above $1 million yet paid no federal income tax, according to the IRS. Yet that was less than 1 percent of returns with incomes above $1 million. On average, taxpayers who made $1 million or more paid 24.4 percent of their income in federal income taxes; those making $100,000 to $125,000 paid 9.9 percent; those making $50,000 to $60,000 paid 6.3 percent. The White House argues that when payroll taxes - paid only on the first $106,800 of wages - are factored in, more middle class workers wind up with a higher tax rate than millionaires.

Well, is that true or false? Seems like if it were demonstrably false, they'd come up with some evidence.

I'm beginning to suspect AP might not know what a fact is.

Really? Obama: Republicans need to explain why they oppose bill and what they'd do in it's stead.

That's an opinion.

If he'd said: "Republicans have never said anything about why they oppose this bill" That would be a fact.

Remember when you could get reliable news from AP instead of just a repeat of the Republican narrative? What the hell happened to them.

FTFA:
OBAMA: "We can either keep taxes exactly as they are for millionaires and billionaires, with loopholes that lead them to have lower tax rates, in some cases, than plumbers and teachers, or we can put teachers and construction workers and veterans back on the job."

THE FACTS: True, "in some cases" wealthy people can exploit loopholes to make their tax rate lower than for people of middle or low income. In recent rhetoric, Obama had suggested it was commonplace for rich people to pay lower rates than others, a claim not supported by IRS statistics. But on Thursday, Obama accurately stated that it only happens sometimes.

This could be a fact to check. But that would take research and effort.

Hey, if we want to be fair and prove the rich pay more, we should remove the cap on payroll taxes! That'd show those libs!

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce last month submitted a jobs proposal to Obama that included a call to ease regulations on businesses. It specifically called for streamlining environmental reviews on major construction projects and to delay the issuance of some potentially burdensome regulations until the economy and employment have improved. In the letter, Chamber President Thomas Donohue also called on Congress to pass legislation that would require congressional approval of major regulations. The chamber did not indicate how many jobs such regulatory changes could create, but it said: "Immediate regulatory relief is required in order to begin moving $1 trillion-$2 trillion in accumulated private capital off of the sidelines and into business expansion."

It seems like if they were really interested in fact-checking, they'd at least try to say whether it's true or false. Instead, it looks like they're using the fact that Obama made this particular argument as evidence in itself that he's wrong.

Slightly partisan source is slightly partisan.

From wiki:

The Chamber generally tries to maintain amicable relationships with both parties. For instance, the Chamber supported both Ronald Reagan's tax cuts and Bill Clinton's NAFTA efforts. In 1993 the Chamber lost several members over its support for Clinton's healthcare reform efforts. The Chamber had chosen to support healthcare reform at that time due to the spiraling healthcare costs experienced by its members. However, House Republicans retaliated by urging boycotts of the organization. The Chamber operated its own cable television station, Biz-Net until 1997 in order to promote its policies. The Chamber shifted somewhat more to the rightward when Tom Donahue became head of the organization in 1997. By the time health care reform became a major issue again in 2010, the organization opposed such efforts.

In the 2008 election cycle, aggressive ads paid for by the USCC attacked a number of Democratic congressional candidates (such as Minnesota's DFL Senate candidate Al Franken) and supported a number of Republican candidates including John Sununu, Gordon Smith, Roger Wicker, Saxby Chambliss and Elizabeth Dole.

During the 2010 campaign cycle, the Chamber spent $32 million, 93 percent of which was to help Republican candidates.[20]

In addition to the expenditures from the Chamber's own funds, in 2010 its political action committee gave $29,000 (89 percent) to Republican candidates and $3,500 (11 percent) to Democratic candidates.

Again, "these people" have shown themselves to be pretty biased against Democrats.
